A neuronal network model of interictal and recurrent ictal activity

    Get PDF
We propose a neuronal network model which undergoes a saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle as the mechanism of the transition from the interictal to the ictal (seizure) state. In the vicinity of this transition, the model captures important dynamical features of both interictal and ictal states. We study the nature of interictal spikes and early warnings of the transition predicted by this model. We further demonstrate that recurrent seizures emerge due to the interaction between two networks.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

The purpose of this article is to present some reflections developed by historians, sociologists and philosophers who have dedicated themselves to the study of the history of clothing and fashion. In this direction, we approach the theoretical discussions of both international and national researchers, elaborated from the 19th century until the contemporaneity.

This article investigates the noble feminine clothing from the Rio de Janeiro court, at the beginning of the 19th century, based on Jean- Baptiste Debret ́s watercolors. Due to the great dimension of this artist’s work, 5 finished watercolors were selected, belonging to Castro Maya Collection, in which it is possible to explore the details of the costumes. The academic basis embranced in the argumentative construction of the text is based on the premise that the social fabric can be understood, among other elements, from clothing and fashion. Thereby, in the perspective of a Social History of clothing, it analyzes how the Portuguese dress influenced the elaboration of the clothing used by the ladies from local elites, which makes it possible to understand how the values of the European civilization are disseminated and incorporated by the society of Rio de Janeiro, starting from the creation of a new clothing aesthetic.Este artículo investiga la indumentaria noble de las mujeres en la corte de Río de Janeiro, a principios del siglo XIX, a partir de las acuarelas de Jean-Baptiste Debret. Strong Constraints on the Parameter Space of the MSSM from Charge and Color Breaking Minima

A complete analysis of all the potentially dangerous directions in the field-space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is carried out. They are of two types, the ones associated with the existence of charge and color breaking minima in the potential deeper than the realistic minimum and the directions in the field-space along which the potential becomes unbounded from below. The corresponding new constraints on the parameter space are given in an analytic form, representing a set of necessary and sufficient conditions to avoid dangerous directions. They are very strong and, in fact, there are extensive regions in the parameter space that become forbidden. This produces important bounds, not only on the value of AA, but also on the values of BB and M1/2M_{1/2}. Finally, the crucial issue of the one-loop corrections to the scalar potential has been taken into account in a proper way.Comment: 48 pages, LaTeX, 12 uuencoded postscript figures in additional file. Dynamical mass matrices from effective superstring theories

    Get PDF
We analyze the general structure of the fermion mass matrices in effective superstrings. They are generically given at low energy by non-trivial functions of the gauge singlet moduli fields. Interesting structures appear in particular if they are homogeneous functions of zero degree in the moduli. In this case we find Yukawa matrices very similar to the ones obtained by imposing a U(1)U(1) family symmetry to reproduce the observed hierarchy of masses and mixing angles. The role of the U(1)U(1) symmetry is played here by the modular symmetry. Explicit orbifold examples are given where realistic quark mass matrices can be obtained. Finally, a complete scenario is proposed which generates the observed hierarchies in a dynamical way.Comment: 27 pages, latex, no figure

A competency framework to assess and activate education for sustainable development:Addressing the UN sustainable development goals 4.7 challenge

This research was supported by Gaia Education. G.P-L was funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Contract number IF/00940/2015).The UN Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (herein, Agenda 30) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer both a set of aspirations for the kind of future we would like to see for the world and a suite of targets and indicators to support goal implementation. Goal 4 promotes quality education and Target 4.7 specifically addresses Education for Sustainability. However, creating a monitoring and evaluation framework for Target 4.7 has been challenging. The aim of this research was to develop a meaningful assessment process. We used a dialogical intervention across complementary expertises and piloted concepts in a trainer workshop. We then developed a modified competency framework, drawing on previous competency models but innovating through the addition of intrapersonal competencies, a self-reflective validation scheme, a focus on non-formal learning, and specific alignment with SDG 4.7 requirements. Through exploration of how such learning could be activated, we proposed the use of multiple intelligences. Education plays a synergistic role in achieving the aspirations embedded within Agenda 2030 and the SDGs. We concluded that Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) will require individuals to acquire ‘key competencies’, aligning with notions of transformational learning, in addition to other generic and context specific competencies.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Duality-Invariant Gaugino Condensation and One-Loop Corrected Kahler Potentials in String Theory

The duality-invariant gaugino condensation with or without massive matter fields is re-analysed, taking into account the dependence of the string threshold corrections on the moduli fields and recent results concerning one-loop corrected K\"ahler potentials. The scalar potential of the theory for a generic superpotential is also calculated.Comment: 18 page
