Impact of region-of-interest delineation methods, reconstruction algorithms, and intra- and inter-operator variability on internal dosimetry estimates using PET
Purpose Human dosimetry studies play a central role in radioligand development for positron emission tomography (PET). Drawing regions of interest (ROIs) on the PET images is used to measure the dose in each organ. In the study aspects related to ROI delineation methods were evaluated for two radioligands of different biodistribution (intestinal vs urinary). Procedures PET images were simulated from a human voxel-based phantom. Several ROI delineation methods were tested: antero-posterior projections (AP), 3D sub-samples of the organs (S), and a 3D volume covering the whole-organ (W). Inter- and intra-operator variability ROI drawing was evaluated by using human data. Results The effective dose estimates using S and W methods were comparable to the true values. AP methods overestimated (49 %) the dose for the radioligand with intestinal biodistribution. Moreover, the AP method showed the highest inter-operator variability: 11 ± 1 %. Conclusions The sub-sampled organ method showed the best balance between quantitative accuracy and inter- and intra-operator variability.Postprint (author's final draft
Twist, tilt, and orientational order at the nematic to twist-bend nematic phase transition of 1¿, 9¿-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) nonane: A dielectric, H 2 NMR, and calorimetric study
The nature of the nematic-nematic phase transition in the liquid crystal dimer 1¿, 9¿-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) nonane (CB9CB) has been investigated using techniques of calorimetry, dynamic dielectric response measurements, and H2 NMR spectroscopy. The experimental results for CB9CB show that, like the shorter homologue CB7CB, the studied material exhibits a normal nematic phase, which on cooling undergoes a transition to the twist-bend nematic phase (NTB), a uniaxial nematic phase, promoted by the average bent molecular shape, in which the director tilts and precesses describing a conical helix. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry has been used to analyze the nature of the NTB-N phase transition, which is found to be weakly first order, but close to tricritical. Additionally broadband dielectric spectroscopy and H2 magnetic resonance studies have revealed information on the structural characteristics of the recently discovered twist-bend nematic phase. Analysis of the dynamic dielectric response in both nematic phases has provided an estimate of the conical angle of the heliconical structure for the NTB phase. Capacitance measurements of the electric-field realignment of the director in initially planar aligned cells have yielded values for the splay and bend elastic constants in the high temperature nematic phase. The bend elastic constant is small and decreases with decreasing temperature as the twist-bend phase is approached. This behavior is expected theoretically and has been observed in materials that form the twist-bend nematic phase. H2 NMR measurements characterize the chiral helical twist identified in the twist-bend nematic phase and also allow the determination of the temperature dependence of the conical angle and the orientational order parameter with respect to the director
Magnetic detection of sentinel lymph node in papillary thyroid carcinoma: The MAGIC-PAT study results
Introduction: Despite the controversy concerning sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), successful detection rates can be achieved by radioguidance and vital dyeing. However, the drawbacks in both techniques are notable. Magnetic-guided SLNB (mSLNB) using superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles is appealing as an alternative procedure.
Materials and Methods: mSLNB using the Sentimag-Sienna System ® , total thyroidectomy and central compartment dissection (CCD) were performed on all PTC patients. Lymph node involvement was assessed by postoperative pathological examination.
Results: From 2014 to 2016, 33 consecutive patients with PTC were enrolled in the study. A total of 20 patients met the eligibility. mSLNB succeeded in 16 patients, with a detection rate of 80%. A median of two SLN per patient were detected. A median of 10.5 non-sentinel lymph nodes (NSLN) from CCD were examined. Among the patients, 56.25% (9/16) had no metastatic nodes, while 12.5% (2/16) had exclusively SLN involvement. No false negative cases were found. The agreement between SLN and NSLN status was 87.5%. The prediction of NSLN involvement by SLN status showed 100% sensitivity, 81.8% specificity, 71.4% PPV and 100% NPV. Subsequently, mSLNB and the final pathological analysis would discriminate 43.75% (7/16) of patients who would certainly benefit from CCD whilst 56.25% of the total would confirm an unnecessary lymphadenectomy and avoid morbidity.
Conclusion: mSLNB showed satisfactory performance in PTC with clinical-negative nodes. We have shown mSLNB to be a good predictor of central compartment status that can improve the staging and management of PTC patients
Some cultural consequences in Spain of the Spanish Invasion of Morocco 1859-60
This article argues is a contribution to the study of interrelationships between colonialism, art, and literature in the nineteenth century. The article argues that the Spanish invasion of Morocco in 1859 led to contradictions and tensions within liberal nationalism, not least because of concerns about the tensions between the need for military reassertion of Spain and the respect for the independence of nations. This led to some reconfiguration of Spanish intellectuals' already complex relationship with North Africa and Islam. A major, perhaps surprising consequence of this reconfiguration, was some equation of Moroccan identity with a monotonous surface that was resistant to the gaze. In consequence, the Catalan painter Fortuny's crucial experience of Morocco led him to value near blank surfaces, and thus to make a major contribution to the origins of modern art
A new reversal mode in exchange coupled antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic disks: distorted viscous vortex
Magnetic vortices have generated intense interest in recent years due to their unique reversal mecha-nisms, fascinating topological properties, and exciting potential applications. In addition, the exchangecoupling of magnetic vortices to antiferromagnets has also been shown to lead to a range of novelphenomena and functionalities. Here we report a new magnetization reversal mode of magnetic vorticesin exchange coupled Ir20Mn80/Fe20Ni80microdots: distorted viscous vortex reversal. In contrast to thepreviously known or proposed reversal modes, the vortex is distorted close to the interface and viscouslydragged due to the uncompensated spins of a thin antiferromagnet, which leads to unexpected asymme-tries in the annihilation and nucleationfields. These results provide a deeper understanding of the physicsof exchange coupled vortices and may also have important implications for applications involvingexchange coupled nanostructure
The unprecedented optical outburst of the quasar 3C 454.3. The WEBT campaign of 2004-2005
The radio quasar 3C 454.3 underwent an exceptional optical outburst lasting
more than 1 year and culminating in spring 2005. The maximum brightness
detected was R = 12.0, which represents the most luminous quasar state thus far
observed (M_B ~ -31.4). In order to follow the emission behaviour of the source
in detail, a large multiwavelength campaign was organized by the Whole Earth
Blazar Telescope (WEBT). Continuous optical, near-IR and radio monitoring was
performed in several bands. ToO pointings by the Chandra and INTEGRAL
satellites provided additional information at high energies in May 2005. The
historical radio and optical light curves show different behaviours. Until
about 2001.0 only moderate variability was present in the optical regime, while
prominent and long-lasting radio outbursts were visible at the various radio
frequencies, with higher-frequency variations preceding the lower-frequency
ones. After that date, the optical activity increased and the radio flux is
less variable. This suggests that the optical and radio emissions come from two
separate and misaligned jet regions, with the inner optical one acquiring a
smaller viewing angle during the 2004-2005 outburst. Moreover, the colour-index
behaviour (generally redder-when-brighter) during the outburst suggests the
presence of a luminous accretion disc. A huge mm outburst followed the optical
one, peaking in June-July 2005. The high-frequency (37-43 GHz) radio flux
started to increase in early 2005 and reached a maximum at the end of our

Long-term multi-wavelength variability and correlation study of Markarian 421 from 2007 to 2009
We study the multi-band variability and correlations of the TeV blazar Mrk
421 on year time scales, which can bring additional insight on the processes
responsible for its broadband emission. We observed Mrk 421 in the very high
energy (VHE) gamma-ray range with the Cherenkov telescope MAGIC-I from March
2007 to June 2009 for a total of 96 hours of effective time after quality cuts.
The VHE flux variability is quantified with several methods, including the
Bayesian Block algorithm, which is applied to data from Cherenkov telescopes
for the first time. The 2.3 year long MAGIC light curve is complemented with
data from the Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM satellites and the KVA, GASP-WEBT, OVRO,
and Mets\"ahovi telescopes from February 2007 to July 2009, allowing for an
excellent characterisation of the multi-band variability and correlations over
year time scales. Mrk 421 was found in different gamma-ray emission states
during the 2.3 year long observation period. Flares and different levels of
variability in the gamma-ray light curve could be identified with the Bayesian
Block algorithm. The same behaviour of a quiet and active emission was found in
the X-ray light curves measured by Swift/BAT and the RXTE/ASM, with a direct
correlation in time. The behaviour of the optical light curve of GASP-WEBT and
the radio light curves by OVRO and Mets\"ahovi are different as they show no
coincident features with the higher energetic light curves and a less variable
emission. The fractional variability is overall increasing with energy. The
comparable variability in the X-ray and VHE bands and their direct correlation
during both high- and low-activity periods spanning many months show that the
electron populations radiating the X-ray and gamma-ray photons are either the
same, as expected in the Synchrotron-Self-Compton mechanism, or at least

Pecking order theory versus trade-off theory : are service SMEs’ capital structure decisions different?
This paper seeks to analyse if the capital structure decisions of service
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are different from those of other types of firm. To do so, we consider four research samples: (i) 610 service SMEs; (ii) 126
service large firms; (iii) 679 manufacturing and construction SMEs; and (iv) 132
manufacturing and construction large firms. Using the two-step estimation method,
the empirical evidence obtained in this study shows that the capital structure
decisions of service SMEs are different from those of other types of firm. Service
SMEs’ capital structure decisions are closer to the assumptions of Pecking Order
Theory and further removed from those of Trade-Off Theory compared with the
case of other types of firm
Steppes, savannahs, forests and phytodiversity reservoirs during the Pleistocene in the Iberian Peninsula
A palaeobotanical analysis of the Pleistocene floras and vegetation in the Iberian Peninsula shows the existence of patched landscapes with Pinus woodlands, deciduous and mixed forests, parklands (savannah-like), shrublands, steppes and grasslands. Extinctions of Arctotertiary woody taxa are recorded during the Early and Middle Pleistocene, but glacial refugia facilitated the survival of a number of temperate, Mediterranean and Ibero-North African woody angiosperms. The responses of Iberian vegetation to climatic changes during the Pleistocene have been spatially and temporarily complex, including rapid changes of vegetation in parallel to orbital and suborbital variability, and situations of multi-centennial resilience or accommodation to climatic changes. Regional characteristics emerged as soon as for the Middle Pleistocene, if not earlier: Ericaceae in the Atlantic coast indicating wetter climate, thermo-mediterranean elements in the south as currently, and broad-leaf trees in the northeastern. Overall, steppe landscapes and open Pinus woodlands prevailed over many continental regions during the cold spells of the Late Pleistocene. The maintenance of a high phytodiversity during the glacials was linked to several refuge zones in the coastal shelves of the Mediterranean and intramountainous valleys. Northern Iberia, especially on coastal areas, was also patched with populations of tree species, and this is not only documented by palaeobotanical data (pollen, charcoal) but also postulated by phylogeographical models
