    Natural geochemical markers reveal environmental history and population connectivity of common cuttlefish in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea

    Natural markers (delta C-13 and delta O-18 stable isotopes) in the cuttlebones of the European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) were determined for individuals collected across a substantial portion of their range in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEAO) and Mediterranean Sea. Cuttlebone delta C-13 and delta O-18 were quantified for core and edge material to characterize geochemical signatures associated with early (juvenile) and recent (sub-adult/adult) life-history periods, respectively. Regional shifts in cuttlebone delta C-13 and delta O-18 values were detected across the 12 sites investigated. Individuals collected from sites in the NEAO displayed more enriched delta C-13 and delta O-18 values relative to sites in the Mediterranean Sea, with the latter also showing salient differences in both markers among western, central and eastern collection areas. Classification success based on cuttlebone delta C-13 and delta O-18 values to four geographical regions (NEAO, western, central and eastern Mediterranean Sea) was relatively high, suggesting that environmental conditions in each region were distinct and produced area-specific geochemical signatures on the cuttlebones ofS. officinalis. A modified delta C-13 and delta O-18 baseline was developed from sites proximal to the Strait of Gibraltar in both the NEAO and Mediterranean Sea to assess potential mixing through this corridor. Nearly, all (95%) of delta C-13 and delta O-18 signatures ofS. officinaliscollected in the area of the NEAO closest to the Strait of Gibraltar (Gulf of Cadiz) matched the signatures of specimens collected in the western Mediterranean, signifying potential movement and mixing of individuals through this passageway.     Chemical analysis of acoustically levitated drops by Raman spectroscopy

    An experimental apparatus combining Raman spectroscopy with acoustic levitation, Raman acoustic levitation spectroscopy (RALS), is investigated in the field of physical and chemical analytics. Whereas acoustic levitation enables the contactless handling of microsized samples, Raman spectroscopy offers the advantage of a noninvasive method without complex sample preparation. After carrying out some systematic tests to probe the sensitivity of the technique to drop size, shape, and position, RALS has been successfully applied in monitoring sample dilution and preconcentration, evaporation, crystallization, an acid–base reaction, and analytes in a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy colloidal suspension

    Factors that influence children's gambling attitudes and consumption intentions: Lessons for gambling harm prevention research, policies and advocacy strategies

    Background: Harmful gambling is a public health issue that affects not only adults but also children. With the development of a range of new gambling products, and the marketing for these products, children are potentially exposed to gambling more than ever before. While there have been many calls to develop strategies which protect children from harmful gambling products, very little is known about the factors that may influence children's attitudes towards these products. This study aimed to explore children's gambling attitudes and consumption intentions and the range of consumer socialisation factors that may influence these attitudes and behaviours. Methods: Children aged 8 to 16 years old (n = 48) were interviewed in Melbourne, Australia. A semi-structured interview format included activities with children and open-ended questions. We explored children's perceptions of the popularity of different gambling products, their current engagement with gambling, and their future gambling consumption intentions. We used thematic analysis to explore children's narratives with a focus on the range of socialising factors that may shape children's gambling attitudes and perceptions. Results: Three key themes emerged from the data. First, children's perceptions of the popularity of different products were shaped by what they had seen or heard about these products, whether through family activities, the media (and in particular marketing) of gambling products, and/or the alignment of gambling products with sport. Second, children's gambling behaviours were influenced by family members and culturally valued events. Third, many children indicated consumption intentions towards sports betting. This was due to four key factors: (1) the alignment of gambling with culturally valued activities; (2) their perceived knowledge about sport; (3) the marketing and advertising of gambling products (and in particular sports betting); and (4) the influence of friends and family. Conclusions: This study indicates that there is a range of socialisation factors, particularly family and the media (predominantly via marketing), which may be positively shaping children's gambling attitudes, behaviours and consumption intentions. There is a need for governments to develop effective policies and regulations to reduce children's exposure to gambling products and ensure they are protected from the harms associated with gambling. © 2017 The Author(s)

    Persistent Place-Making in Prehistory: the Creation, Maintenance, and Transformation of an Epipalaeolithic Landscape

    Most archaeological projects today integrate, at least to some degree, how past people engaged with their surroundings, including both how they strategized resource use, organized technological production, or scheduled movements within a physical environment, as well as how they constructed cosmologies around or created symbolic connections to places in the landscape. However, there are a multitude of ways in which archaeologists approach the creation, maintenance, and transformation of human-landscape interrelationships. This paper explores some of these approaches for reconstructing the Epipalaeolithic (ca. 23,000–11,500 years BP) landscape of Southwest Asia, using macro- and microscale geoarchaeological approaches to examine how everyday practices leave traces of human-landscape interactions in northern and eastern Jordan. The case studies presented here demonstrate that these Epipalaeolithic groups engaged in complex and far-reaching social landscapes. Examination of the Early and Middle Epipalaeolithic (EP) highlights that the notion of “Neolithization” is somewhat misleading as many of the features we use to define this transition were already well-established patterns of behavior by the Neolithic.     A articulação temporomandibular faz parte do sistema estomatognático que, junto com os dentes, periodonto, coluna cervical, crânio e cintura escapular, é responsável pela mastigação, fonação, deglutição, respiração e expressão facial. Exercícios terapêuticos têm sido empregados na reabilitação e prevenção das disfunções temporomandibulares (DTM). Este estudo teve como objetivo revisar a literatura a respeito, verificando a eficácia dos exercícios terapêuticos nas DTM. Foram examinados periódicos do período entre 1991 e agosto de 2008, nas bases de dados Medline, Lilacs e Pubmed, utilizando as palavras-chave "desordem temporomandibular", "terapia por exercícios" e as correspondentes em inglês. Foram selecionados relatos de caso, artigos de revisão e ensaios clínicos com mais de 20 pacientes, num total de 53 artigos. A maioria relatou efeitos positivos na redução da dor, melhora da mobilidade e dos aspectos psicológicos, sugerindo que os exercícios podem contribuir no tratamento da DTM. Entretanto, o tipo, tempo de duração, número de repetições, freqüência e intensidade dos exercícios não está bem descrita. A falta de padronização das pesquisas, bem como da forma de avaliar, dificultam a comparação dos resultados. Mais estudos com métodos padronizados devem ser estimulados.The temporomandibular joint is part of the stomatognathic system, which comprises a complex set of orofacial structures, including teeth, cervical spine, cranium and shoulder. The system is responsible for masticatory, phonation, and deglutition functions, as well as for breathing and facial expression. Physical therapy exercises have been used for rehabilitation and prevention of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The purpose of this study was to review studies on the subject and assess the effectiveness of physical therapy exercises for TMD. Case reports, review articles, and clinical trials with more than 20 patients, published from 1991 to mid-2008, were searched for in databases Medline, Lilacs and Pubmed, by using keywords "exercise therapy" "temporomandibular disorders", and the correspondent terms in Portuguese. Fifty-three studies were selected of which most showed positive effects on pain reduction, improvement in joint mobility and psychological aspects, suggesting that physical therapy exercises may be beneficial in TMD treating. However, the type, duration time, repetitions, frequency and intensity of the therapeutic exercises are not well described. The lack of research and assessment method standardization hinder result comparison. More studies with standardized methods must be stimulated
