    Safety Critical Mechanisms

    Spaceflight mechanisms have a reputation for being difficult to develop and operate successfully. This reputation is well earned. Many circumstances conspire to make this so: the environments in which the mechanisms are used are extremely severe, there is usually limited or no maintenance opportunity available during operation due to this environment, the environments are difficult to replicate accurately on the ground, the expense of the mechanism development makes it impractical to build and test many units for long periods of time before use, mechanisms tend to be highly specialized and not prone to interchangeability or off-the-shelf use, they can generate and store a lot of energy, and the nature of mechanisms themselves, as a combination of structures, electronics, etc. designed to accomplish specific dynamic performance, makes them very complex and subject to many unpredictable interactions of many types. In addition to their complexities, mechanism are often counted upon to provide critical vehicle functions that can result in catastrophic events should the functions not be performed. It is for this reason that mechanisms are frequently subjected to special scrutiny in safety processes. However, a failure tolerant approach, along with good design and development practices and detailed design reviews, can be developed to allow such notoriously troublesome mechanisms to be utilized confidently in safety-critical applications

    Low-Impact Mating System for Docking Spacecraft

    A document describes a low-impact mating system suitable for both docking (mating of two free-flying spacecraft) and berthing (in which a robot arm in one spacecraft positions an object for mating with either spacecraft). The low-impact mating system is fully androgynous: it mates with a copy of itself, i.e., all spacecraft and other objects to be mated are to be equipped with identical copies of the system. This aspect of the design helps to minimize the number of unique parts and to standardize and facilitate mating operations. The system includes a closed-loop feedback control subsystem that actively accommodates misalignments between mating spacecraft, thereby attenuating spacecraft dynamics and mitigating the need for precise advance positioning of the spacecraft. The operational characteristics of the mating system can be easily configured in software, during operation, to enable mating of spacecraft having various masses, center-of-gravity offsets, and closing velocities. The system design provides multi-fault tolerance for critical operations: for example, to ensure unmating at a critical time, a redundant unlatching mechanism and two independent pyrotechnic release subsystems are included

    Development Testing and Subsequent Failure Investigation of a Spring Strut Mechanism

    Commodities are transferred between the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) crew module (CM) and service module (SM) via an external umbilical that is driven apart with spring-loaded struts after the structural connection is severed. The spring struts must operate correctly for the modules to separate safely. There was no vibration testing of strut development units scoped in the MPCV Program Plan; therefore, any design problems discovered as a result of vibration testing would not have been found until the component qualification. The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) and Lockheed Martin (LM) performed random vibration testing on a single spring strut development unit to assess its ability to withstand qualification level random vibration environments. Failure of the strut while exposed to random vibration resulted in a follow-on failure investigation, design changes, and additional development tests. This paper focuses on the results of the failure investigations including identified lessons learned and best practices to aid in future design iterations of the spring strut and to help other mechanism developers avoid similar pitfalls

    Electromagnetic Dissociation as a Tool for Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics

    Coulomb dissociation is an especially simple and important reaction mechanism. Since the perturbation due to the electric field of the (target) nucleus is exactly known, firm conclusions can be drawn from such measurements. Electromagnetic matrixelements and astrophysical S-factors for radiative capture processes can be extracted from experiments. We describe the basic elements of the theory of nonrelativistic and relativistic electromagnetic excitation with heavy ions. This is contrasted to electromagnetic excitation with leptons (electrons), with their small electric charge and the absence of strong interactions. We discuss various approaches to the study of higher order electromagnetic effects and how these effects depend on the basic parameters of the experiment. The dissociation of neutron halo nuclei is studied in a zero range model using analytical methods. We also review ways how to treat nuclear interactions, show their characteristics and how to avoid them (as far as possible). We review the experimental results from a theoretical point of view. Of special interest for nuclear structure physics is the appearence of low lying electric dipole strength in neutron rich nuclei. Applications of Coulomb dissociation to some selected radiative capture reactions relevant for nuclear astrophysics are discussed. The Coulomb dissociation of 8B is relevant for the solar neutrino problem. The potential of the method especially for future investigations of (medium) heavy exotic nuclei for nuclear structure and astrophysics is explored. We conclude that the Coulomb dissociation mechanism is theoretically well understood, the potential difficulties are identified and can be taken care of. Many interesting experiments have been done in this field and many more are expected in the future.Comment: review article accepted for publication in "Prog. in Part. and Nucl.     The X-38 V-201 Fin Fold Actuation Mechanism

    The X-38 Vehicle 201 (V-201) is a space flight prototype lifting body vehicle that was designed to launch to orbit in the Space Shuttle orbiter payload bay. Although the project was cancelled in May 2003, many of the systems were nearly complete. This paper will describe the fin folding actuation mechanism flight subsystems and development units as well as lessons learned in the design, assembly, development testing, and qualification testing. The two vertical tail fins must be stowed (folded inboard) to allow the orbiter payload bay doors to close.     Combined experimental studies and theoretical calculations to yield the complete molecular structure and vibrational spectra of (CH3)3GeH

    The molecular structure of trimethylgermane has been determined by gas electron diffraction experiments. Infrared spectra for the gaseous, liquid, and solid phases were also recorded. Parallel and perpendicular polarized Raman spectra for the liquid were measured to obtain depolarization values. The experimental studies were supported by a series of computational calculations using HF, B3LYP, and MP2 methods and a variety of basis sets. The force fields obtained from density functional theory using both B3LYP/6-31G; and B3LYP/ 6-311+G; ; were scaled with both Pulay's SQM methodology and Yoshida's WLS procedure to simulate the vibrational spectra and assist in the assignment of fundamental bands. The Raman intensities were obtained from polarizability derivatives. The vibrational spectra of trimethylgermane were completely assigned on the basis of the experimental data and the theoretical prediction of vibrational frequencies and intensities.Fil: Roldan, Maria Lorena.
