    Effects of green tea on the nutritional status of the exercise

    Objetivo: evaluar el efecto del té verde o sus sucedáneos en el estado nutricional de los sujetos que realizan ejercicio físico. Metodología: las palabras clave son: “green tea” AND “exercise”, en cuatro bases de datos documentales: Pubmed, EBSCOHOST, OvidSP y Proquest. Criterios de inclusión (enero de 2010 y diciembre de 2014): edad adulta de la muestra (18-65 años, OMS); consumo de una cantidad cuantificada de té verde o sucedáneos, junto con la realización de ejercicio físico medible en intensidad. Resultados: de 260 artículos, se incluyeron el 5%. En el 69% se trata de estudios con un entrenamiento diseñado, y en el 92% se ha incluido un test de ejercicio para valorar parámetros. El 77% oscilan entre 20-40 años; las muestras varían entre 9 y 36 individuos. El 69% son de larga duración. El GTE ha sido el sucedáneo más utilizado (38%). El 92% de los ensayos han obtenido algún tipo de mejora (en el 92% fue significativa). Conclusiones: se recomienda aumentar las investigaciones sobre la clasificación de los ejercicios. Las mejoras significativas en el estado nutricional de los sujetos por la ingesta del té verde o sucedáneos son: IMC, peso, IGC, MM, INM, OM y MR. El GTE ha sido el que mayores resultados satisfactorios ha proporcionado. No existe homogeneidad en los resultados significativos. Se necesitan realizar nuevos ensayos clínicos. Las diferencias entre los ensayos clínicos revisados reflejan que las mejoras encontradas en el estado nutricional de los sujetos que realizan actividad física deben ser avaladas con nuevas investigaciones. Esto ayudará a crear evidencia en este tipo de aspectos.Purposes: assessing the magnitude of the effects of green tea in subjects that do exercise. Methodology: a search was been carried out with key words “green tea” AND “exercise” in four documentary databases: Pubmed, EBSCOHOST, OvidSP and Proquest. Inclusion criteria: adult age of the sample (18-65 years, based on WHO), and the consumption of a quantified amount of green tea or substitutes, along with doing physical exercise measurable in intensity, in clinical tests published between January 2010 and December 2014, whose source were indexed scientific journals. Results: 260 articles were analyzed, of which 13 items were selected. 69% are studies with a designed workout, and 92% have included an exercise test to assess parameters. 77% fluctuate between 20-40 years and sample size between 9 and 36 subjects. 69% are long length. GTE has been the most used substitute (38%). 92% of studies have obtained some improvement and 92% of them, were significantly statistic. Interpretation of results: little homogeneity has been found in results in the analysis of results expression. Sample size is limited. There is a wide range of GTE substitutes and diversity of doses and exercise done. It cannot be possible to establish a dose, dosage and physical activity recommended. Conclusions: green tea gives us a wide variety of benefits in combination with physical exercise. There is a little evidence about quality. It cannot be possible to establish specific recommendations for obtaining benefits

    La sombra de Franco es alargada

    En el presente artículo se denuncia la autopropaganda que Stanley G. Payne y Jesús Palacios han hecho de sí mismos ensu reciente biografía sobre Franco como si se tratara de una obra verdaderamente excepcional que necesitara de este tipo de comentarios a los habituales e inherentes de la crítica académica. Dado que no es el caso, resulta aún más insólito que unos autores con pretensiones de reconocimiento por parte de sus pares se abandonen a semejante ejercicio de autobombo que provoca vergüenza ajena. En consecuencia se opta en este artículo por un análisis hipercrítico de los puntos principales que tales autores destacan de su obra como si se tratara de importantes aportaciones cuando no pasan de lugares comunes sin la menor trascendencia historiográfica. Nos servimos para ello de fuertes dosis de ironía al contrastarlos con el estado de la cuestión sobre el personaje estudiado: el general Franco, ajustándonos a la sabia máxima salomónica de que las loas deben de provenir de labios ajenos a los propios sino se quiere rozar el ridículo.This article denounces the self-propaganda in which Stanley G. Payne and Jesus Palacios have engaged in their recent biography on Franco as if it were a truly exceptional work warranting the kind of comments fitting to an academic study. Given that this is not the case, it is even more unbelievable that authors with pretensions to be recognized by their peers stoop to such shameful self-glorification. Consequently, this article outlines a critical analysis of the main points that both authors make as if they were important contributions. In fact, those points mostly are of little historical significance. Loaded with some irony, the article examines the character under study, General Franco, recalling one the sayings of the wise Solomon: if one does not wish to be ridiculed, praise must come from others, not from oneself

    Generation of bioactive peptides during food processing

    [EN] Large amounts of peptides are naturally generated in foods through the proteolysis phenomena taking place during processing. Such proteolysis is carried out either by endogenous enzymes in ripened foods or by the combined action of endogenous and microbial enzymes when fermented. Food proteins can also be isolated and hydrolysed by peptidases to produce hydrolysates. endo-peptidases act first followed by the successive action of exo-peptidases (mainly, tri-and di-peptidylpeptidases, aminopeptidases and carboxypeptidases). The generated peptides may be further hydrolysed through the gastrointestinal digestion resulting in a pool of peptides with different sequences and lengths, some of them with relevant bioactivity. However, these peptides should be absorbed intact through the intestinal barrier and reach the blood stream to exert their physiological action.     Recent Progress in Enzymatic Release of Peptides in Foods of Animal Origin and Assessment of Bioactivity

This manuscript is reviewing the recent advances on enzymatic mechanisms for the hydrolysis of proteins from foods of animal origin, including the types of enzymes and mechanisms of action involved, the strategies followed for the isolation and identification of bioactive peptides through advanced proteomic tools, and the assessment of bioactivity and its beneficial effects.     Relativistic Doppler-boosted emission in gamma-ray binaries

    Gamma-ray binaries could be compact pulsar wind nebulae formed when a young pulsar orbits a massive star. The pulsar wind is contained by the stellar wind of the O or Be companion, creating a relativistic comet-like structure accompanying the pulsar along its orbit. The X-ray and the very high energy (>100 GeV, VHE) gamma-ray emissions from the binary LS 5039 are modulated on the orbital period of the system. Maximum and minimum flux occur at the conjunctions of the orbit, suggesting that the explanation is linked to the orbital geometry. The VHE modulation has been proposed to be due to the combined effect of Compton scattering and pair production on stellar photons, both of which depend on orbital phase. The X-ray modulation could be due to relativistic Doppler boosting in the comet tail where both the X-ray and VHE photons would be emitted. Relativistic aberrations change the seed stellar photon flux in the comoving frame so Doppler boosting affects synchrotron and inverse Compton emission differently. The dependence with orbital phase of relativistic Doppler-boosted (isotropic) synchrotron and (anisotropic) inverse Compton emission is calculated, assuming that the flow is oriented radially away from the star (LS 5039) or tangentially to the orbit (LS I +61 303, PSR B1259-63). Doppler boosting of the synchrotron emission in LS 5039 produces a lightcurve whose shape corresponds to the X-ray modulation. The observations imply an outflow velocity of 0.15-0.33c consistent with the expected flow speed at the pulsar wind termination shock. In LS I +61 303, the calculated Doppler boosted emission peaks in phase with the observed VHE and X-ray maximum.     Transcriptional Profile Associated with Clinical Outcomes in Metastatic Hormone-Sensitive Prostate Cancer Treated with Androgen Deprivation and Docetaxel

(2) Methods: We investigate if tumor transcriptomic analysis predicts mHSPC evolution in a multicenter retrospective biomarker study. A customized panel of 184 genes was tested in mRNA from tumor samples by the nCounter platform in 125 mHSPC patients treated with ADT+DX. Gene expression was correlated with castration-resistant prostate cancer-free survival (CRPC-FS) and overall survival (OS). (3) Results: High expression of androgen receptor (AR) signature was independently associated with longer CRPC-FS (hazard ratio (HR) 0.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.3-0.9; p = 0.015), high expression of estrogen receptor (ESR) signature with longer CRPC-FS (HR 0.6, 95% CI 0.4-0.9; p = 0.019) and OS (HR 0.5, 95% CI 0.2-0.9, p = 0.024), and lower expression of tumor suppressor genes (TSG) (RB1, PTEN and TP53) with shorter OS (HR 2, 95% CI 1-3.8; p = 0.044). ARV7 expression was independently associated with shorter CRPC-FS (HR 1.5, 95% CI 1.1-2.1, p = 0.008) and OS (HR 1.8, 95% CI 1.2-2.6, p = 0.004), high ESR2 was associated with longer OS (HR 0.5, 95% CI 0.2-1, p = 0.048) and low expression of RB1 was independently associated with shorter OS (HR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.2, p = 0.014). (4) Conclusions: AR, ESR, and TSG expression signatures, as well as ARV7, RB1, and ESR2 expression, have a prognostic value in mHSPC patients treated with ADT+DX

    El crecimiento autoorganizado de puntos cuánticos de InSb sobre substratos de InP mediante epitaxia de haces moleculares ha sido caracterizado mediante microscopía electrónica de transmisión y microscopía de fuerzas atómicas a fin de estudiar la morfología y establecer el mecanismo de relajación de las estructuras. Medidas de difracción de electrones de alta energía durante el crecimiento de las muestras indican una transición en el modo de crecimiento de bidimensional a tridimensional a partir de un espesor total equivalente depositado de 1.1 monocapas atómicas de InSb. Los puntos cuánticos tienen en general, una buena calidad cristalina así como una distribución superficial homogénea, pero una alta anisotropía en las dimensiones entre las direcciones [110] y [110]. Así mismo, se encuentra una rugosidad superficial, también afectada de un alto grado de anisotropía, siendo las crestas y los valles paralelos a la dirección de elongación de las islas. Las imágenes de microscopía electrónica revelan un facetado de las estructuras según planos (001) que las limitan por la parte superior y planos {111}, {113} y {114}, que las limitan lateralmente. Las tensiones son eficazmente relajadas por la presencia de una red de dislocaciones situada en la interficie InSb/InP

    The doubling of the superorbital period of Cyg X-1

    We study properties of the superorbital modulation of the X-ray emission of Cyg X-1. We find that it has had a stable period of about 300 d in soft and hard X-rays and in radio since 2005 until at least 2010, which is about double the previously seen period. This new period, seen in the hard spectral state only, is detected not only in the light curves but also in soft X-ray hardness ratios and in the amplitude of the orbital modulation. On the other hand, the spectral slope in hard X-rays, >20 keV, averaged over superorbital bins is constant, and the soft and hard X-rays and the radio emission change in phase. This shows that the superorbital variability consists of changing the normalization of an intrinsic spectrum of a constant shape and of changes of the absorbing column density with the phase. The maximum column density is achieved at the superorbital minimum. The amplitude changes are likely to be caused by a changing viewing angle of an anisotropic emitter, most likely a precessing accretion disc. The constant shape of the intrinsic spectrum shows that this modulation is not caused by a changing accretion rate. The modulated absorbing column density shows the presence of a bulge around the disc centre, as proposed previously. We also find the change of the superorbital period from about 150 d to about 300 d to be associated with almost unchanged average X-ray fluxes, making the period change difficult to explain in the framework of disc-irradiation models. Finally, we find no correlation of the X-ray and radio properties with the reported detections in the GeV and TeV gamma-ray range.Comment: MNRAS, in press, 8 page

    Possible changes of state and relevant timescales for a neutron star in LS I +61{\deg}303

    The properties of the short, energetic bursts recently observed from the gamma-ray binary LS I +61{\deg}303, are typical of those showed by high magnetic field neutron stars, and thus provide a strong indication in favor of a neutron star being the compact object in the system. Here, we discuss the transitions among the states accessible to a neutron star in a system like LS I +61{\deg}303, such as the ejector, propeller and accretor phases, depending on the NS spin period, magnetic field and rate of mass captured. We show how the observed bolometric luminosity (>= few x 1E35 erg/s), and its broad-band spectral distribution, indicate that the compact object is most probably close to the transition between working as an ejector all along its orbit, and being powered by the propeller effect when it is close to the orbit periastron, in a so-called flip-flop state. By assessing the torques acting onto the compact object in the various states, we follow the spin evolution of the system, evaluating the time spent by the system in each of them. Even taking into account the constraint set by the observed gamma-ray luminosity, we found that the total age of the system is compatible with being ~5-10 kyr, comparable to the typical spin-down ages of high-field neutron stars.     Regorafenib Alteration of the BCL-xL/MCL-1 Ratio Provides a Therapeutic Opportunity for BH3-Mimetics in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Models

    Background: The multikinase inhibitor regorafenib, approved as second-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after sorafenib failure, may induce mitochondrial damage. BH3-mimetics, inhibitors of specific BCL-2 proteins, are valuable drugs in cancer therapy to amplify mitochondrial-dependent cell death. Methods: In in vitro and in vivo HCC models, we tested regorafenib's effect on the BCL-2 network and the efficacy of BH3-mimetics on HCC treatment. Results: In hepatoma cell lines and Hep3B liver spheroids, regorafenib cytotoxicity was potentiated by BCL-xL siRNA transfection or pharmacological inhibition (A-1331852), while BCL-2 antagonism had no effect. Mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization, cytochrome c release, and caspase-3 activation mediated A-1331852/regorafenib-induced cell death. In a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) HCC model, BCL-xL inhibition stimulated regorafenib activity, drastically decreasing tumor growth. Moreover, regorafenib-resistant HepG2 cells displayed increased BCL-xL and reduced MCL-1 expression, while A-1331852 reinstated regorafenib efficacy in vitro and in a xenograft mouse model. Interestingly, BCL-xL levels, associated with poor prognosis in liver and colorectal cancer, and the BCL-xL/MCL-1 ratio were detected as being increased in HCC patients. Conclusion: Regorafenib primes tumor cells to BH3-mimetic-induced cell death, allowing BCL-xL inhibition with A-1331852 or other strategies based on BCL-xL degradation to enhance regorafenib efficacy, offering a novel approach for HCC treatment, particularly for tumors with an elevated BCL-xL/MCL-1 ratio
