What do we know about succession in family businesses? Mapping current knowledge and unexplored territory
We review studies on succession in family businesses that have been done since Handlerâs (1994) seminal literature review on the topic in an effort to synthesize existing research and outline paths for future studies. We offer three contributions. First, we select succession studies that adhere to established methodological standards. Second, we review these studies based on the perspective that succession is a process comprising five stages across three levels of analysis. Finally, we outline current gaps in our knowledge and ask researchers to adopt a more holistic approach when studying succession
When to see a doctor for common health problems: distribution patterns of functional health literacy across migrant populations in Switzerland
Background: Knowing when to seek professional help for health problems is considered an important aspect of health literacy. However, little is known about the distribution of help-seeking knowledge in the general population or specific subpopulations. Methods: We analysed data from the "Health Monitoring of the Swiss Migrant Population 2010â and used a short survey tool to study the distribution of help-seeking knowledge. We sampled members of four migrant groups (from Portugal, Turkey, Serbia and Kosovo; n=2,614). Our tool contained 12 items that addressed common physical and psychological health problems. A total sum score measured help-seeking knowledge. Two sub-scores analysed knowledge related to potential overuse (minor symptoms) or potential underuse (major symptoms). We applied linear regression to show variations in help-seeking knowledge by age, sex, region of origin and length of stay. Results: Controlling for self-rated health, we found that region of origin, higher education, female gender and younger age were significantly associated with higher knowledge scores. Conclusions: We present empirical evidence of unequal distribution of help-seeking knowledge across four migrant populations in Switzerland. Our findings contribute to current conceptual developments in health literacy, and provide starting points for future research
Generation of Recombinant Antibodies against the beta-(1,6)-Branched beta-(1,3)-D-Glucan Schizophyllan from Immunized Mice via Phage Display
beta-(1,6)-Branched beta-(1,3)-D-glucans like schizophyllan from the basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune excite various immunostimulatory effects and have been clinically tested as adjuvants. Some of the glucans are also applicable in food or petrol industry due to their viscosity and temperature stability in aqueous solution. Antibodies against these glucans could be used as tool for analysis of glucan preparations or for further research of its bioactivity. Therefore, an immune phage display library was constructed from mice immunized with schizophyllan. Three recombinant monoclonal antibodies were isolated from this library by affinity selection (panning) on schizophyllan. The half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) values for those antibodies varied between 16.4ângâmLâ1 and 21.3ângâmLâ1. The clones showed binding specificity not only for schizophyllan but also for other beta-(1,6)-branched beta-(1,3)-D-glucans of similar macromolecular structure. Denaturation of the secondary structure led to a reduced antibody binding, indicating an epitope requiring the correct conformation of the triple helical structure of the glucans

Kulturen bestimmen grundlegende Werte und Visionen von Individuen oder Gemeinschaften, deren Einstellungen zur Weltbegegnung und den Umgang miteinander. Angesichts kultureller Vielfalt bedarf es einer BefĂ€higung der bzw. des Einzelnen, mit dem Kontext Kultur angemessen umgehen zu können. Insbesondere Kultur- und Bildungspolitik sowie schulische Bildungsgelegenheiten formen unweigerlich Vorstellungen von und Herangehensweisen an Kultur. Inwiefern aber prĂ€gen diverse Kulturauffassungen das (Professions-)VerstĂ€ndnis (angehender) Lehrerinnen und Lehrer? Welche Professionalisierungspotenziale halten Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften durch die Vermittlung kulturtheoretischer und kultureller WissensbestĂ€nde fĂŒr die Bildung von Lehramtsstudierenden sowie von LehrkrĂ€ften bereit? Warum sind entsprechendes Wissen und damit verknĂŒpfte Kompetenzen in Bildungsprozessen unentbehrlich?
In den BeitrĂ€gen des Sammelbandes âKultur und kulturelle Bildung. InterdisziplinĂ€re Verortungen â Lehrerinnen- und Lehrerbildung â Perspektiven fĂŒr die Schuleâ wird Kultur in mannigfaltigen Auffassungen beleuchtet und im Zusammenhang kultureller Lehrerinnen- und Lehrerbildung thematisiert. Im Horizont eines semiotischen Kulturbegriffs und anhand unterschiedlichster Themen und Kulturkonzepte fokussieren Autorinnen und Autoren aus verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben kultureller Bildung: die Vermittlung und Aneignung von Kompetenzen, um das von Menschen Geschaffene und mit Bedeutung sowie Symbolen Versehene reflektieren, decodieren und sich selbst in der codierten Welt verorten sowie daran teilhaben zu können. Dabei werden auf Basis kulturtheoretischer Ăberlegungen fachwissenschaftliche, fachdidaktische und bildungswissenschaftliche Perspektiven vernetzt und Optionen einer produktiven Verzahnung geisteswissenschaftlicher Kulturkonzepte mit Kontexten schulischer kultureller Bildung vorgestellt â ein Beitrag, um die kulturbezogene Professionalisierung von Lehramtsstudierenden und LehrkrĂ€ften voranzubringen
Retinal Vascular Occlusion after COVID-19 Vaccination : More Coincidence than Causal Relationship? Data from a Retrospective Multicentre Study
Background: To investigate whether vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is associated with
the onset of retinal vascular occlusive disease (RVOD). Methods: In this multicentre study, data
from patients with central and branch retinal vein occlusion (CRVO and BRVO), central and branch
retinal artery occlusion (CRAO and BRAO), and anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AION) were
retrospectively collected during a 2-month index period (1 Juneâ31 July 2021) according to a defined
protocol. The relation to any previous vaccination was documented for the consecutive case series.
Numbers of RVOD and COVID-19 vaccination were investigated in a case-by-case analysis. A caseâ
control study using age- and sex-matched controls from the general population (study participants
from the Gutenberg Health Study) and an adjusted conditional logistic regression analysis was
conducted. Results: Four hundred and twenty-one subjects presenting during the index period
(61 days) were enrolled: one hundred and twenty-one patients with CRVO, seventy-five with BRVO,
fifty-six with CRAO, sixty-five with BRAO, and one hundred and four with AION. Three hundred
and thirty-two (78.9%) patients had been vaccinated before the onset of RVOD. The vaccines given
were BNT162b2/BioNTech/Pfizer (n = 221), followed by ChadOx1/AstraZeneca (n = 57), mRNA1273/Moderna (n = 21), and Ad26.COV2.S/Johnson & Johnson (n = 11; unknown n = 22). Our
caseâcontrol analysis integrating population-based data from the GHS yielded no evidence of an
increased risk after COVID-19 vaccination (OR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.60â1.45, p = 0.75) in connection with
a vaccination within a 4-week window. Conclusions: To date, there has been no evidence of any
association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and a higher RVOD risk
Multidecadal accumulation of anthropogenic and remineralized dissolved inorganic carbon along the Extended Ellett Line in the northeast Atlantic Ocean
Marine carbonate chemistry measurements have been carried out annually since 2009 during UK research cruises along the Extended Ellett Line (EEL), a hydrographic transect in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. The EEL intersects several water masses that are key to the global thermohaline circulation, and therefore the cruises sample a region in which it is critical to monitor secular physical and biogeochemical changes. We have combined results from these EEL cruises with existing quality-controlled observational data syntheses to produce a hydrographic time series for the EEL from 1981 to 2013. This reveals multidecadal increases in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) throughout the water column, with a near-surface maximum rate of 1.80â±â0.45â”molâkgâ1âyrâ1. Anthropogenic CO2 accumulation was assessed, using simultaneous changes in apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and total alkalinity (TA) as proxies for the biogeochemical processes that influence DIC. The stable carbon isotope composition of DIC (ÎŽ13CDIC) was also determined and used as an independent test of our method. We calculated a volume-integrated anthropogenic CO2 accumulation rate of 2.8â±â0.4âmgâCâmâ3âyrâ1 along the EEL, which is about double the global mean. The anthropogenic CO2 component accounts for only 31â±â6% of the total DIC increase. The remainder is derived from increased organic matter remineralization, which we attribute to the lateral redistribution of water masses that accompanies subpolar gyre contraction. Output from a general circulation ecosystem model demonstrates that spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the observations has not significantly biased our multidecadal rate of change calculations and indicates that the EEL observations have been tracking distal changes in the surrounding North Atlantic and Nordic Seas
Investigating the Associations among Overtime Work, Health Behaviors, and Health: A Longitudinal Study among Full-time Employees

One mechanism that may account for this association is that working overtime leads to elevated levels of stress, which could affect workerâs behavioral decisions or habits (such as smoking and lack of physical activity). In turn, this could lead to adverse health. Purpose The present study examined this reasoning in a prospective longitudinal design. Data from the prospective 2-year Study on Health at Work (N=649) were used to test our hypotheses. Pitfalls in machine learningâbased assessment of tumorâinfiltrating lymphocytes in breast cancer: a report of the international immunoâoncology biomarker working group
The clinical significance of the tumor-immune interaction in breast cancer (BC) has been well established, and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have emerged as a predictive and prognostic biomarker for patients with triple-negative (estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2 negative) breast cancer (TNBC) and HER2-positive breast cancer. How computational assessment of TILs can complement manual TIL-assessment in trial- and daily practices is currently debated and still unclear. Recent efforts to use machine learning (ML) for the automated evaluation of TILs show promising results. We review state-of-the-art approaches and identify pitfalls and challenges by studying the root cause of ML discordances in comparison to manual TILs quantification. We categorize our findings into four main topics; (i) technical slide issues, (ii) ML and image analysis aspects, (iii) data challenges, and (iv) validation issues. The main reason for discordant assessments is the inclusion of false-positive areas or cells identified by performance on certain tissue patterns, or design choices in the computational implementation. To aid the adoption of ML in TILs assessment, we provide an in-depth discussion of ML and image analysis including validation issues that need to be considered before reliable computational reporting of TILs can be incorporated into the trial- and routine clinical management of patients with TNBC
