Thermodynamics of volume collapse transitions in cerium and related compounds
We present a non-linear elastic model of a coherent transition with
discontinuous volume change in an isotropic solid. The model reproduces the
anomalous thermodynamics typical of coherent equilibrium including intrinsic
hysteresis (for a pressure driven experiment) and a negative bulk modulus. The
novelty of the model is that the statistical mechanics solution can be easily
worked out. We find that coherency leads to an infinite-range density--density
interaction, which drives classical critical behavior. The pressure width of
the hysteresis loop shrinks with increasing temperature, ending at a critical
point at a temperature related to the shear modulus. The bulk modulus softens
with a 1/2 exponent at the transition even far from the critical point. Many
well known features of the phase diagram of Ce and related systems are

Finite time singularities in a class of hydrodynamic models
Models of inviscid incompressible fluid are considered, with the kinetic
energy (i.e., the Lagrangian functional) taking the form in 3D Fourier representation, where
is a constant, . Unlike the case (the usual Eulerian
hydrodynamics), a finite value of results in a finite energy for a
singular, frozen-in vortex filament. This property allows us to study the
dynamics of such filaments without the necessity of a regularization procedure
for short length scales. The linear analysis of small symmetrical deviations
from a stationary solution is performed for a pair of anti-parallel vortex
filaments and an analog of the Crow instability is found at small wave-numbers.
A local approximate Hamiltonian is obtained for the nonlinear long-scale
dynamics of this system. Self-similar solutions of the corresponding equations
are found analytically. They describe the formation of a finite time
singularity, with all length scales decreasing like ,

Nonlinear coupled Alfv\'{e}n and gravitational waves
In this paper we consider nonlinear interaction between gravitational and
electromagnetic waves in a strongly magnetized plasma. More specifically, we
investigate the propagation of gravitational waves with the direction of
propagation perpendicular to a background magnetic field, and the coupling to
compressional Alfv\'{e}n waves. The gravitational waves are considered in the
high frequency limit and the plasma is modelled by a multifluid description. We
make a self-consistent, weakly nonlinear analysis of the Einstein-Maxwell
system and derive a wave equation for the coupled gravitational and
electromagnetic wave modes. A WKB-approximation is then applied and as a result
we obtain the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the slowly varying wave
amplitudes. The analysis is extended to 3D wave pulses, and we discuss the
applications to radiation generated from pulsar binary mergers. It turns out
that the electromagnetic radiation from a binary merger should experience a

Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia
Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jäsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
Velocity-space sensitivity of the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at JET
The velocity-space sensitivities of fast-ion diagnostics are often described by so-called weight functions. Recently, we formulated weight functions showing the velocity-space sensitivity of the often dominant beam-target part of neutron energy spectra. These weight functions for neutron emission spectrometry (NES) are independent of the particular NES diagnostic. Here we apply these NES weight functions to the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR at JET. By taking the instrumental response function of TOFOR into account, we calculate time-of-flight NES weight functions that enable us to directly determine the velocity-space sensitivity of a given part of a measured time-of-flight spectrum from TOFOR
