    Tunable polarization components and electric field induced crystallization in polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF); a piezo polymer

    Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) a semicrystalline pieozoelectric polymer was synthesized with varying process conditions and its ferroelectric domain orientations were studied using piezoresponse force microscope (PFM). PVDF thin films fabricated using tape casting technique with precursor solutions of varying viscosities reveal that the polarization components transform from a dominant planar component to an out-of-plane polarization components with increase in viscosity. Interestingly the planar components possessed a head to head or tail to tail kind of paired domains separated by a distance of ~ 380-400nm. The electrostatic energies computed by numerically solving the electrostatic equilibrium equation for the electrically inhomogeneous system are in good correlation with the experiments. On increment of electric field, the domains were observed to grow in size and shape which indicates amorphous to crystalline transformation in the case of PVDF. Such transformation was evident from x-ray diffraction studies performed in-situ in the presence of an applied electric field

    Genetic structure of Plasmodium falciparum field isolates in eastern and north-eastern India

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Molecular techniques have facilitated the studies on genetic diversity of <it>Plasmodium </it>species particularly from field isolates collected directly from patients. The <it>msp-1 </it>and <it>msp-2 </it>are highly polymorphic markers and the large allelic polymorphism has been reported in the block 2 of the <it>msp-1 </it>gene and the central repetitive domain (block3) of the <it>msp-2 </it>gene. Families differing in nucleotide sequences and in number of repetitive sequences (length variation) were used for genotyping purposes. As limited reports are available on the genetic diversity existing among <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>population of India, this report evaluates the extent of genetic diversity in the field isolates of <it>P. falciparum </it>in eastern and north-eastern regions of India.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A study was designed to assess the diversity of <it>msp-1 </it>and <it>msp-2 </it>among the field isolates from India using allele specific nested PCR assays and sequence analysis. Field isolates were collected from five sites distributed in three states namely, Assam, West Bengal and Orissa.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>P. falciparum </it>isolates of the study sites are highly diverse in respect of length as well as sequence motifs with prevalence of all the reported allelic families of <it>msp-1 </it>and <it>msp-2</it>. Prevalence of identical allelic composition as well as high level of sequence identity of alleles suggest a considerable amount of gene flow between the <it>P. falciparum </it>populations of different states. A comparatively higher proportion of multiclonal isolates as well as multiplicity of infection (MOI) was observed among isolates of highly malarious districts Karbi Anglong (Assam) and Sundergarh (Orissa). In all the five sites, R033 family of <it>msp-1 </it>was observed to be monomorphic with an allele size of 150/160 bp. The observed 80–90% sequence identity of Indian isolates with data of other regions suggests that Indian <it>P. falciparum </it>population is a mixture of different strains.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study shows that the field isolates of eastern and north-eastern regions of India are highly diverse in respect of <it>msp-1 </it>(block 2) and <it>msp-2 </it>(central repeat region, block 3). As expected Indian isolates present a picture of diversity closer to southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea and Latin American countries, regions with low to meso-endemicity of malaria in comparison to African regions of hyper- to holo-endemicity.</p

    Cerebrovascular dysfunction with stress and depression

    Maintenance of adequate tissue perfusion through a dense network of cerebral microvessels is critical for the perseveration of normal brain function. Regulation of the cerebral blood flow has to ensure adequate delivery of nutrients and oxygen with moment-to-moment adjustments to avoid both hypo- and hyper-perfusion of the brain tissue. Even mild impairments of cerebral blood flow regulation can have significant implications on brain function. Evidence suggests that chronic stress and depression elicits multifaceted functional impairments to the cerebral microcirculation, which plays a critical role in brain health and the pathogenesis of stress-related cognitive impairment and cerebrovascular events. Identifying the functional and structural changes to the brain that are induced by stress is crucial for achieving a realistic understanding of how related illnesses, which are highly disabling and with a large economic cost, can be managed or reversed. This overview discusses the stress-induced alterations in neurovascular coupling with specific attention to cerebrovascular regulation (endothelial dependent and independent vasomotor function, microvessel density).     Aggressively marketed, cheaper and more easily available pre-packaged foods, often considered as foods high in fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) is finding a growing preference amongst consumers in India. These HFSS foods are the major causes of heart and other non-communicable diseases worldwide. To prevent or control further widespread of NCDs, Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued numerous food and packaging laws and acts to control their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import so that a safe and wholesome food is available to the consumers. The Front-of-pack labeling (FOPL), proposed by FSSAI in 2019, is a key strategy to alert and educate consumers in making an informed choice. This article aims to enlist and describe various food and labeling laws and acts enacted in India since the last two decades and identify that what type of label would be best suited to India

    A phase-field study of domain dynamics in ferroelectric BCT-BZT system

    We present a thermodynamically consistent phase-field model describing the free energy of perovskite-based BCT-BZT solid solution containing an intermediate morphotropic phase boundaries. The Landau coefficients are derived as functions of composition of zirconium. The electrostrictive and elastic constants are appropriately chosen from experimental findings. The resulting Landau free energy is constructed to describe the stable polarization states as a function of composition. The evolution of the polarization order parameters at a particular composition is described by a set of time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. Additionally, we solve Poisson's equation and mechanical equilibrium equation to account for the ferroelectric/ferroelastic interactions. We have performed two dimensional and three-dimensional simulations with appropriate electrical boundary conditions to study the effect of external electric field on domain dynamics in BCT-BZT system at the equimolar composition

    Thinking rural health in Santal communities of West Bengal: an interprofessional bottom-up approach

    BACKGROUND: An interprofessional and cross-cultural pedagogical project in community health for students in nursing, social work, anthropology and medicine at the end of the bachelor’s degree begun in 2014. After a rural context fieldwork in several Santal villages of West Bengal (India), students had to conduct a research project, based on a community-health topic. AIMS: This paper describes how such a pedagogical project, introducing students to ethnographic research, can initiate new ways of thinking for possible future health interventions in rural communities. METHODS: An inductive approach based on ethnography was used during the fieldwork, including observations, interviews, focus groups and local documentation. RESULTS: Our observations led to the finding that actions in rural health cannot be initiated without: promoting an interprofessional/interdisciplinary perspective and a culture of complexity and reflectivity; considering local populations in transition and not in a fixed homogenous situation; understanding more than imposing; taking into account local disease classification and local pragmatic solutions; considering the dialogue between bio-medicine and therapeutic pluralism; considering local perceptions and practices; considering care itineraries/pathways; and finally being conscious of our apostolic function. CONCLUSION: Our interprofessional pedagogical project promotes a bottom-up approach in dialogue with a global health vision
