INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations towards the unidentified MeV source GRO J1411-64
The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL, and
its central part, also by XMM-Newton. The data analysis shows no hint for new
detections at hard X-rays. The upper limits in flux herein presented constrain
the energy spectrum of whatever was producing GRO J1411-64, imposing, in the
framework of earlier COMPTEL observations, the existence of a peak in power
output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. The
Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4 location error
of GRO J1411-64, but can be safely excluded as the possible counterpart: the
extrapolation of the energy spectrum is well below the one for GRO J1411-64 at
MeV energies. 22 significant sources (likelihood ) were extracted and
analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU
J141255.6-635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact
the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source
position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. The
unique peak of the power output at high energies (hard X-rays and gamma-rays)
resembles that found in the SED seen in blazars or microquasars. However, an
analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet
filled with relativistic electrons which radiate through synchrotron and
inverse Compton scattering with star, disk, corona and synchrotron photons
shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. This and the
non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the
physical reality of this source, which is discussed in some detail
Preparation of palladium-supported periodic mesoporous organosilicas and their use as catalysts in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction
Three periodic mesoporous materials, i.e., two organosilicas with either ethylene or phenylene bridges and one silica, have been used as supports for Pd nanoparticles. All Pd-supported samples (1.0 wt%) were prepared by the incipient wetness method and subsequently reduced in an H2 stream at 200 °C. Both hydrogen chemisorption and temperature programmed reduction experiments revealed significant differences depending on the support. Pd2+ species were more reducible on the mesoporous organosilicas than on their silica counterpart. Also, remarkable differences on the particle morphology were observed by transmission electron microscopy. All Pd-supported samples were active in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between bromobenzene and phenylboronic acid
Adiposity has differing associations with incident coronary heart disease and mortality in the Scottish population: cross-sectional surveys with follow-up
Objective:
Investigation of the association of excess adiposity with three different outcomes: all-cause mortality, coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality and incident CHD.
Design:
Cross-sectional surveys linked to hospital admissions and death records.
Subjects:
19 329 adults (aged 18–86 years) from a representative sample of the Scottish population.
Measurements:
Gender-stratified Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality, CHD mortality and incident CHD. Separate models incorporating the anthropometric measurements body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) or waist–hip ratio (WHR) were created adjusted for age, year of survey, smoking status and alcohol consumption.
Results:
For both genders, BMI-defined obesity (greater than or equal to30 kg m−2) was not associated with either an increased risk of all-cause mortality or CHD mortality. However, there was an increased risk of incident CHD among the obese men (hazard ratio (HR)=1.78; 95% confidence interval=1.37–2.31) and obese women (HR=1.93; 95% confidence interval=1.44–2.59). There was a similar pattern for WC with regard to the three outcomes; for incident CHD, the HR=1.70 (1.35–2.14) for men and 1.71 (1.28–2.29) for women in the highest WC category (men greater than or equal to102 cm, women greater than or equal to88 cm), synonymous with abdominal obesity. For men, the highest category of WHR (greater than or equal to1.0) was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (1.29; 1.04–1.60) and incident CHD (1.55; 1.19–2.01). Among women with a high WHR (greater than or equal to0.85) there was an increased risk of all outcomes: all-cause mortality (1.56; 1.26–1.94), CHD mortality (2.49; 1.36–4.56) and incident CHD (1.76; 1.31–2.38).
Conclusions:
In this study excess adiposity was associated with an increased risk of incident CHD but not necessarily death. One possibility is that modern medical intervention has contributed to improved survival of first CHD events. The future health burden of increased obesity levels may manifest as an increase in the prevalence of individuals living with CHD and its consequences
Archaeosomes made of Halorubrum tebenquichense total polar lipids: A new source of adjuvancy
Background: Archaeosomes (ARC), vesicles prepared from total polar lipids (TPL) extracted from selected genera and species from the Archaea domain, elicit both antibody and cell-mediated immunity to the entrapped antigen, as well as efficient cross priming of exogenous antigens, evoking a profound memory response. Screening for unexplored Archaea genus as new sources of adjuvancy, here we report the presence of two new Halorubrum tebenquichense strains isolated from grey crystals (GC) and black mood (BM) strata from a littoral Argentinean Patagonia salt flat. Cytotoxicity, intracellular transit and immune response induced by two subcutaneous (sc) administrations (days 0 and 21) with BSA entrapped in ARC made of TPL either form BM (ARC-BM) and from GC (ARC-GC) at 2% w/w (BSA/lipids), to C3H/HeN mice (25 μg BSA, 1.3 mg of archaeal lipids per mouse) and boosted on day 180 with 25 μg of bare BSA, were determined. Results: DNA G+C content (59.5 and 61.7% mol BM and GC, respectively), 16S rDNA sequentiation, DNA-DNA hybridization, arbitrarily primed fingerprint assay and biochemical data confirmed that BM and GC isolates were two non-previously described strains of H. tebenquichense. Both multilamellar ARC mean size were 564 ± 22 nm, with -50 mV zeta-potential, and were not cytotoxic on Vero cells up to 1 mg/ml and up to 0.1 mg/ml of lipids on J-774 macrophages (XTT method). ARC inner aqueous content remained inside the phago-lysosomal system of J-774 cells beyond the first incubation hour at 37°C, as revealed by pyranine loaded in ARC. Upon subcutaneous immunization of C3H/HeN mice, BSA entrapped in ARC-BM or ARC-GC elicited a strong and sustained primary antibody response, as well as improved specific humoral immunity after boosting with the bare antigen. Both IgG1 and IgG2a enhanced antibody titers could be demonstrated in long-term (200 days) recall suggesting induction of a mixed Th1/Th2 response. Conclusion: We herein report the finding of new H. tebenquichense non alkaliphilic strains in Argentinean Patagonia together with the adjuvant properties of ARC after sc administration in mice. Our results indicate that archaeosomes prepared with TPL from these two strains could be successfully used as vaccine delivery vehicles
Novel insights into the cardio-protective effects of FGF21 in lean and obese rat hearts
Aims: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a hepatic metabolic regulator with pleotropic actions. Its plasma concentrations are increased in obesity and diabetes; states associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease. We therefore investigated the direct effect of FGF21 on cardio-protection in obese and lean hearts in response to ischemia.
Methods and Results: FGF21, FGF21-receptor 1 (FGFR1) and beta-Klotho (βKlotho) were expressed in rodent, human hearts and primary rat cardiomyocytes. Cardiac FGF21 was expressed and secreted (real time RT-PCR/western blot and ELISA) in an autocrine-paracrine manner, in response to obesity and hypoxia, involving FGFR1-βKlotho components. Cardiac-FGF21 expression and secretion were increased in response to global ischemia. In contrast βKlotho was reduced in obese hearts. In isolated adult rat cardiomyocytes, FGF21 activated PI3K/Akt (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt), ERK1/2(extracellular signal-regulated kinase) and AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) pathways. In Langendorff perfused rat [adult male wild-type wistar] hearts, FGF21 administration induced significant cardio-protection and restoration of function following global ischemia. Inhibition of PI3K/Akt, AMPK, ERK1/2 and ROR-α (retinoic-acid receptor alpha) pathway led to significant decrease of FGF21 induced cardio-protection and restoration of cardiac function in response to global ischemia. More importantly, this cardio-protective response induced by FGF21 was reduced in obesity, although the cardiac expression profiles and circulating FGF21 levels were increased.
Conclusion: In an ex vivo Langendorff system, we show that FGF21 induced cardiac protection and restoration of cardiac function involving autocrine-paracrine pathways, with reduced effect in obesity. Collectively, our findings provide novel insights into FGF21-induced cardiac effects in obesity and ischemia
Production of Pairs Accompanied by Nuclear Dissociation in Ultra-Peripheral Heavy Ion Collision
We present the first data on pair production accompanied by nuclear
breakup in ultra-peripheral gold-gold collisions at a center of mass energy of
200 GeV per nucleon pair. The nuclear breakup requirement selects events at
small impact parameters, where higher-order corrections to the pair production
cross section should be enhanced. We compare the pair kinematic distributions
with two calculations: one based on the equivalent photon approximation, and
the other using lowest-order quantum electrodynamics (QED); the latter includes
the photon virtuality. The cross section, pair mass, rapidity and angular
distributions are in good agreement with both calculations. The pair transverse
momentum, , spectrum agrees with the QED calculation, but not with the
equivalent photon approach. We set limits on higher-order contributions to the
cross section. The and spectra are similar, with no evidence

Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle
azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high
) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at =200 GeV.
The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled
p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar
to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong
suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high
previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state

Is adolescent body mass index and waist circumference associated with the food environments surrounding schools and homes? A longitudinal analysis
Background: There has been considerable interest in the role of access to unhealthy food options as a determinant of weight status. There is conflict across the literature as to the existence of such an association, partly due to the dominance of cross-sectional study designs and inconsistent definitions of the food environment. The aim of our study is to use longitudinal data to examine if features of the food environment are associated to measures of adolescent weight status. Methods: Data were collected from secondary schools in Leeds (UK) and included measurements at school years 7 (ages 11/12), 9 (13/14), and 11 (15/16). Outcome variables, for weight status, were standardised body mass index and standardised waist circumference. Explanatory variables included the number of fast food outlets, supermarkets and ‘other retail outlets’ located within a 1 km radius of an individual’s home or school, and estimated travel route between these locations (with a 500 m buffer). Multi-level models were fit to analyse the association (adjusted for confounders) between the explanatory and outcome variables. We also examined changes in our outcome variables between each time period. Results: We found few associations between the food environment and measures of adolescent weight status. Where significant associations were detected, they mainly demonstrated a positive association between the number of amenities and weight status (although effect sizes were small). Examining changes in weight status between time periods produced mainly non-significant or inconsistent associations. Conclusions: Our study found little consistent evidence of an association between features of the food environment and adolescent weight status. It suggests that policy efforts focusing on the food environment may have a limited effect at tackling the high prevalence of obesity if not supported by additional strategies
Transverse momentum and collision energy dependence of high hadron suppression in Au+Au collisions at ultrarelativistic energies
We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production
in Au+Au and p+p collisions at \sqrtsNN=200 GeV. A large, approximately
constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for
5\lt\pT\lt12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the
centrality and \pT dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints
on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon
saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with
observations. We observe no evidence of \pT-dependent suppression, which may be
expected from models incorporating jet attentuation in cold nuclear matter or

Azimuthally sensitive Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 200 GeV
We present the results of a systematic study of the shape of the pion
distribution in coordinate space at freeze-out in Au+Au collisions at RHIC
using two-pion Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry. Oscillations of the
extracted HBT radii vs. emission angle indicate sources elongated perpendicular
to the reaction plane. The results indicate that the pressure and expansion
time of the collision system are not sufficient to completely quench its
