Milagrito: a TeV air-shower array
Milagrito, a large, covered water-Cherenkov detector, was the world's first
air-shower-particle detector sensitive to cosmic gamma rays below 1 TeV. It
served as a prototype for the Milagro detector and operated from February 1997
to May 1998. This paper gives a description of Milagrito, a summary of the
operating experience, and early results that demonstrate the capabilities of
this technique.Comment: 38 pages including 24 figure
Have mirror micrometeorites been detected?
Slow-moving ( km/s) 'dark matter particles' have allegedly been
discovered in a recent experiment. We explore the possibility that these slow
moving dark matter particles are small mirror matter dust particles originating
from our solar system. Ways of further testing our hypothesis, including the
possibility of observing these dust particles in cryogenic detectors such as
NAUTILUS, are also discussed.Comment: Few changes, about 8 pages lon
Far-Ultraviolet and Far-Infrared Bivariate Luminosity Function of Galaxies: Complex Relation between Stellar and Dust Emission
Far-ultraviolet (FUV) and far-infrared (FIR) luminosity functions (LFs) of
galaxies show a strong evolution from to , but the FIR LF
evolves much stronger than the FUV one. The FUV is dominantly radiated from
newly formed short-lived OB stars, while the FIR is emitted by dust grains
heated by the FUV radiation field. It is known that dust is always associated
with star formation activity. Thus, both FUV and FIR are tightly related to the
star formation in galaxies, but in a very complicated manner. In order to
disentangle the relation between FUV and FIR emissions, we estimate the UV-IR
bivariate LF (BLF) of galaxies with {\sl GALEX} and {\sl AKARI} All-Sky Survey
datasets. Recently we invented a new mathematical method to construct the BLF
with given marginals and prescribed correlation coefficient. This method makes
use of a tool from mathematical statistics, so called "copula". The copula
enables us to construct a bivariate distribution function from given marginal
distributions with prescribed correlation and/or dependence structure. With
this new formulation and FUV and FIR univariate LFs, we analyze various FUV and
FIR data with {\sl GALEX}, {\sl Spitzer}, and {\sl AKARI} to estimate the UV-IR
BLF. The obtained BLFs naturally explain the nonlinear complicated relation
between FUV and FIR emission from star-forming galaxies. Though the faint-end
of the BLF was not well constrained for high- samples, the estimated linear
correlation coefficient was found to be very high, and is remarkably
stable with redshifts (from 0.95 at to 0.85 at ). This implies
the evolution of the UV-IR BLF is mainly due to the different evolution of the
univariate LFs, and may not be controlled by the dependence structure.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Earth, Planets and Space, in pres
Spatial rigid-multi-body systems with lubricated spherical clearance joints : modeling and simulation
The dynamic modeling and simulation of spatial rigid-multi-body systems with lubricated spherical joints is the main purpose of the present work. This issue is of paramount importance in the analysis and design of realistic multibody mechanical systems undergoing spatial motion. When the spherical clearance joint is modeled as dry contact; i.e., when there is no lubricant between the mechanical elements which constitute the joint, a body-to-body (typically metal-to-metal) contact takes place. The joint reaction forces in this case are evaluated through a Hertzian-based contact law. A hysteretic damping factor is included in the dry contact force model to account for the energy dissipation during the contact process. The presence of a fluid lubricant avoids the direct metal-to-metal contact. In this situation, the squeeze film action, due to the relative approaching motion between the mechanical joint elements, is considered utilizing the lubrication theory associated with the spherical bearings. In both cases, the intra-joint reaction forces are evaluated as functions of the geometrical, kinematical and physical characteristics of the spherical joint. These forces are then incorporated into a standard formulation of the systemâs governing equations of motion as generalized external forces. A spatial four bar mechanism that includes a spherical clearance joint is considered here as example. The computational simulations are carried out with and without the fluid lubricant, and the results are compared with those obtained when the system is modeled with perfect joints only. From the general results it is observed that the systemâs performance with lubricant effect presents fewer peaks in the kinematic and dynamic outputs, when compared with those from the dry contact joint model.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT

Lubricated revolute joints in rigid multibody systems
The main purpose of this work is to present a general methodology for modeling lubricated revolute joints in constrained rigid multibody systems. In the dynamic analysis of journal-bearings, the hydrodynamic forces, which include both squeeze and wedge effects, generated by the lubricant fluid, oppose the journal motion. The hydrodynamic forces are obtained by integrating the pressure distribution evaluated with the aid of Reynoldsâ equation, written for the dynamic regime. The hydrodynamic forces built up by the lubricant fluid are evaluated from the system state variables and included into the equations of motion of the multibody system. Numerical examples are presented in order to demonstrate the use of the methodologies and procedures described in this work.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT
Measurement of the branching fraction
The branching fraction is measured in a data sample
corresponding to 0.41 of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb
detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions
affecting the sin2 measurement from The
time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be . This is the most precise measurement to

Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays
Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of
prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from
the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp
collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A
time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of
phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard
Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; minor revisions on May 23, 201
Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) and the direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma
The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma
and Bs0 phi gamma has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1
of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass
energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 ->
phi gamma) = 1.23 +/- 0.06(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) +/- 0.10(fs/fd), where the
first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic
uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation
fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma), the
branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.5 +/- 0.4) x
10^{-5}.
The direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma decays has also been measured with
the same data and found to be A(CP)(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (0.8 +/- 1.7(stat.) +/-
0.9(syst.))%.
Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the
previous experimental results and theoretical expectations.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figues, 4 table
