    Bringing Statistical Methodologies for Enterprise Integration of Conversational Agents

Salamanca, 6-8 April, 2011In this paper we present a methodology to develop commercial conversational agents that avoids the effort of manually defining the dialog strategy for the dialog management module. Our corpus-based methodology is based on selecting the next system answer by means of a classification process in which the complete dialog history is considered.     Bladder cancer index: cross-cultural adaptation into Spanish and psychometric evaluation

    BACKGROUND: The Bladder Cancer Index (BCI) is so far the only instrument applicable across all bladder cancer patients, independent of tumor infiltration or treatment applied. We developed a Spanish version of the BCI, and assessed its acceptability and metric properties. METHODS: For the adaptation into Spanish we used the forward and back-translation method, expert panels, and cognitive debriefing patient interviews. For the assessment of metric properties we used data from 197 bladder cancer patients from a multi-center prospective study. The Spanish BCI and the SF-36 Health Survey were self-administered before and 12 months after treatment. Reliability was estimated by Cronbach's alpha. Construct validity was assessed through the multi-trait multi-method matrix. The magnitude of change was quantified by effect sizes to assess responsiveness. RESULTS: Reliability coefficients ranged 0.75-0.97. The validity analysis confirmed moderate associations between the BCI function and bother subscales for urinary (r = 0.61) and bowel (r = 0.53) domains; conceptual independence among all BCI domains (r ≤ 0.3); and low correlation coefficients with the SF-36 scores, ranging 0.14-0.48. Among patients reporting global improvement at follow-up, pre-post treatment changes were statistically significant for the urinary domain and urinary bother subscale, with effect sizes of 0.38 and 0.53. CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish BCI is well accepted, reliable, valid, responsive, and similar in performance compared to the original instrument. These findings support its use, both in Spanish and international studies, as a valuable and comprehensive tool for assessing quality of life across a wide range of bladder cancer patients

    CIBERER : Spanish national network for research on rare diseases: A highly productive collaborative initiative

    Altres ajuts: Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research

    Preparation and Characterization of Fluorescent CdS Quantum Dots used for the Direct Detection of GST Fusion Proteins

    Advances in the life sciences are now closely linked to the availability of new experimental tools that allow for the manipulation of biomolecules and the study of biological processes at the molecular level. In this context, we have optimized a synthesis process to obtain glutathione‐capped fluorescent CdS nanoparticles to specifically detect Glutathione S‐Transferase (GST) ‐tagged proteins. Using our method, based on five different heating steps, brightly fluorescent and biocompatible CdS quantum dots of different sizes can be obtained. QD optical behaviour has been evaluated studying both absorbance and fluorescence. For all the samples, the excitonic absorption onset clearly shows a blue shift at 512nm in comparison with that of bulk CdS, due to the quantum confinement effect. At increased average sizes of the nanocrystal, the emission fluorescent band shows a red shift, from 440nm to 540nm. Among different QD solutions, we demonstrate an expansion of the emission range up to ~100 nm, thus improving their features as biomarkers. Moreover we show that optimized glutathionecapped quantum dots can directly bind GST blotted onto polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes, and thus are suitable for the direct detection of GST fusion proteins

    THE MOTIVATION OF COLLABORATORS IN FAMILY MICRO COMPANIES: CYBERCAFÉ

    <div><p>ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the motivation of collaborators based on the Maslow pyramid, in order to have an approach to the subject of motivation in family micro-businesses, such as cybercafé, where business is income from computer systems and the internet. Originality/value: This paper is original to find solutions to the existent gap in motivating collaborators of micro family business dedicated to the service of renting computers for the Internet. The main implication is to generate proposals for the improvement of labor motivation in the aforementioned family micro-enterprises. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire elaborated on the scale of Likert is applied to diagnose motivation and job satisfaction starting from the Maslow pyramid. With a sample of 7 employees, who work in the company mentioned above, the questionnaire was applied to Google forms. Summary of key results: The results presented by the study of job motivation in cybercafé are not favorable to the company, due to the representativeness showed by the “indifferent” option chosen by the employees in the scenarios presented in the questionnaire. This can create uncertainty due to the impartiality or to some extent insecurity in the employee when choosing the option “indifferent”. Findings: Labor motivation in the family micro-business partners may be a little complex to address under the Maslow theory, and in general, that of any models, which have been developed, because of to the environment, in which these family companies are set up and operate.</p></div

    The surgical safety checklist and patient outcomes after surgery: a prospective observational cohort study, systematic review and meta-analysis

    © 2017 British Journal of Anaesthesia Background: The surgical safety checklist is widely used to improve the quality of perioperative care. However, clinicians continue to debate the clinical effectiveness of this tool. Methods: Prospective analysis of data from the International Surgical Outcomes Study (ISOS), an international observational study of elective in-patient surgery, accompanied by a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. The exposure was surgical safety checklist use. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and the secondary outcome was postoperative complications. In the ISOS cohort, a multivariable multi-level generalized linear model was used to test associations. To further contextualise these findings, we included the results from the ISOS cohort in a meta-analysis. Results are reported as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. Results: We included 44 814 patients from 497 hospitals in 27 countries in the ISOS analysis. There were 40 245 (89.8%) patients exposed to the checklist, whilst 7508 (16.8%) sustained ≥1 postoperative complications and 207 (0.5%) died before hospital discharge. Checklist exposure was associated with reduced mortality [odds ratio (OR) 0.49 (0.32–0.77); P\u3c0.01], but no difference in complication rates [OR 1.02 (0.88–1.19); P=0.75]. In a systematic review, we screened 3732 records and identified 11 eligible studies of 453 292 patients including the ISOS cohort. Checklist exposure was associated with both reduced postoperative mortality [OR 0.75 (0.62–0.92); P\u3c0.01; I2=87%] and reduced complication rates [OR 0.73 (0.61–0.88); P\u3c0.01; I2=89%). Conclusions: Patients exposed to a surgical safety checklist experience better postoperative outcomes, but this could simply reflect wider quality of care in hospitals where checklist use is routine
