A site-controlled quantum dot system offering both high uniformity and spectral purity
In this paper we report on the optical properties of site controlled InGaAs
dots with GaAs barriers grown in pyramidal recesses by metalorganic vapour
phase epitaxy. The inhomogeneous broadening of excitonic emission from an
ensemble of quantum dots is found to be unusually narrow, with a standard
deviation of 1.19 meV, and spectral purity of emission lines from individual
dots is found to be very high (18-30 ueV), in contrast with other
site-controlled systems.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Habituation to novel visual vestibular environments with special reference to space flight
The etiology of space motion sickness and the underlying physiological mechanisms associated with spatial orientation in a space environment were investigated. Human psychophysical experiments were used as the basis for the research concerning the interaction of visual and vestibular cues in the development of motion sickness. Particular emphasis is placed on the conflict theory in terms of explaining these interactions. Research on the plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex is discussed
Limits on the temporal variation of the fine structure constant, quark masses and strong interaction from quasar absorption spectra and atomic clock experiments
We perform calculations of the dependence of nuclear magnetic moments on
quark masses and obtain limits on the variation of from
recent measurements of hydrogen hyperfine (21 cm) and molecular rotational
transitions in quasar absorption systems, atomic clock experiments with
hyperfine transitions in H, Rb, Cs, Yb, Hg and optical transition in
Hg. Experiments with Cd, deuterium/hydrogen, molecular SF and

Predicting the breaking onset of surface water waves
Why do ocean waves break? Understanding this important and obvious property of the ocean surface has been elusive for decades. This paper investigates causes which lead deep-water two-dimensional initially monochromatic waves to break. Individual wave steepness is found to be the single parameter which determines whether the wave will break immediately, never break or take a finite number of wave lengths to break. The breaking will occur once the wave reaches the Stokes limiting steepness. The breaking probability and the location of breaking onset can be predicted, properties of incipient breakers measured. Potential applications to field conditions are discussed
Photo sensor array technology development
The development of an improved capability photo sensor array imager for use in a Viking '75 type facsimile camera is presented. This imager consists of silicon photodiodes and lead sulfide detectors to cover a spectral range from 0.4 to 2.7 microns. An optical design specifying filter configurations and convergence angles is described. Three electronics design approaches: AC-chopped light, DC-dual detector, and DC-single detector, are investigated. Experimental and calculated results are compared whenever possible using breadboard testing and tolerance analysis techniques. Results show that any design used must be forgiving of the relative instability of lead sulfide detectors. A final design using lead sulfide detectors and associated electronics is implemented by fabrication of a hybrid prototype device. Test results of this device show a good agreement with calculated values
Birth, death and diffusion of interacting particles
Individual-based models of chemical or biological dynamics usually consider
individual entities diffusing in space and performing a birth-death type
dynamics. In this work we study the properties of a model in this class where
the birth dynamics is mediated by the local, within a given distance, density
of particles. Groups of individuals are formed in the system and in this paper
we concentrate on the study of the properties of these clusters (lifetime,
size, and collective diffusion). In particular, in the limit of the interaction
distance approaching the system size, a unique cluster appears which helps to

Inversion improves the recognition of facial expression in thatcherized images
The Thatcher illusion provides a compelling example of the face inversion effect. However, the marked effect of inversion in the Thatcher illusion contrasts to other studies that report only a small effect of inversion on the recognition of facial expressions. To address this discrepancy, we compared the effects of inversion and thatcherization on the recognition of facial expressions. We found that inversion of normal faces caused only a small reduction in the recognition of facial expressions. In contrast, local inversion of facial features in upright thatcherized faces resulted in a much larger reduction in the recognition of facial expressions. Paradoxically, inversion of thatcherized faces caused a relative increase in the recognition of facial expressions. Together, these results suggest that different processes explain the effects of inversion on the recognition of facial expressions and on the perception of the Thatcher illusion. The grotesque perception of thatcherized images is based on a more orientation-sensitive representation of the face. In contrast, the recognition of facial expression is dependent on a more orientation-insensitive representation. A similar pattern of results was evident when only the mouth or eye region was visible. These findings demonstrate that a key component of the Thatcher illusion is to be found in orientation-specific encoding of the features of the face
Embedding the concept of ecosystems services:The utilisation of ecological knowledge in different policy venues
The concept of ecosystem services is increasingly being promoted by academics and policy makers as a means to protect ecological systems through more informed decision making. A basic premise of this approach is that strengthening the ecological knowledge base will significantly enhance ecosystem health through more sensitive decision making. However, the existing literature on knowledge utilisation, and many previous attempts to improve decision making through better knowledge integration, suggest that producing ‘more knowledge’ is only ever a necessary but insufficient condition for greater policy success. We begin this paper by reviewing what is already known about the relationship between ecological knowledge development and utilisation, before introducing a set of theme issue papers that examine—for the very first time—how this politically and scientifically salient relationship plays out across a number of vital policy venues such as land-use planning, policy-level impact assessment, and cost–benefit analysis. Following a detailed synthesis of the key findings of all the papers, this paper identifies and explores new research and policy challenges in this important and dynamic area of environmental governance
