Interethnic similarity of anger suppression-aggression association in conflicts in intimate and non-intimate relationships across ethnic groups in the Netherlands
Self- and Other-Oriented Motivations Associated with Emotional Suppression of Internalized and Externalized Negative Emotions: A Multiethnic Self-Report Study in the Netherlands
We were interested in the motivations associated with emotional suppression, their relationship with negative emotions in self-reported emotional events, and their cross-cultural similarities and differences. Based on a framework of human values (Schwartz, 1994) and internalization-externalization (Krueger & Markon, 2006), we expected in the current study that self-reported motivations to suppress negative emotions are either self- or other-oriented. The sample consisted of 354 Dutch majority members, 319 immigrants from non-Western, and 368 from Western countries. The two-dimensional solution of self- and other-oriented motivations was confirmed. Non-Western immigrants scored higher on other-oriented motivation than Western immigrants, but no interethnic differences were found in self-oriented motivation. Non-Western immigrants scored higher on anxiety, compassion, guilt, and hate compared to Dutch group. Associations of negative emotions with self- and other- oriented motivation were the same in all groups. Sadness was positively related to self-oriented motivation, whereas anger was positively related to other-oriented motivation. We concluded that emotional suppression depends not only on self- or other-orientation but also on the type of emotions (internalized versus externalized) and the relationships are not influenced by ethnicity
Interethnic Similarity of Anger Suppression-Aggression Association in Conflicts in Intimate and Non-Intimate Relationships Across Ethnic Groups in the Netherlands
This study examined associations between emotional suppression, anger, and aggression in intimate (parent and friend) and non-intimate (boss and shop assistant) conflicts in a vignette study conducted among immigrants and majority group members in the Netherlands. The sample consisted of 456 Dutch majority group members, 445 immigrants from non-Western, and 477 immigrants from Western countries. Path analyses showed that anger fully mediated the emotion suppression-aggression relationship in a similar way across groups and conflicts with a parent, boss, and shop assistant (only in a conflict situation with a boss, emotional suppression and anger were both directly related to aggression). As expected, non-Western immigrants experienced less anger in these conflicts. However, no interethnic differences were found in the tendency to suppress anger and aggression in any conflict situation. We could not replicate earlier observed cross-cultural differences in obedience, hierarchy, and restriction of emotional expression among the samples. We concluded that non-Western immigrants do not seem to differ in management of anger in interpersonal conflict situations from Western groups
Multi-frequency study of a new Fe-rich supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud, MCSNR J0508-6902
We present a detailed radio, X-ray and optical study of a newly discovered
Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR) which we denote MCSNR
J0508-6902. Observations from the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and
the X-ray observatory are complemented by deep H
images and Anglo Australian Telescope AAOmega spectroscopic data to study the
SNR shell and its shock-ionisation. Archival data at other wavelengths are also
examined. The remnant follows a filled-in shell type morphology in the
radio-continuum and has a size of 74 pc 57 pc at the LMC
distance. The X-ray emission exhibits a faint soft shell morphology with
Fe-rich gas in its interior indicative of a Type Ia origin. The remnant
appears to be mostly dissipated at higher radio-continuum frequencies leaving
only the south-eastern limb fully detectable while in the optical it is the
western side of the SNR shell that is clearly detected. The best-fit
temperature to the shell X-ray emission ( keV) is
consistent with other large LMC SNRs. We determined an O/Fe ratio of and
an Fe mass of 0.5-1.8 in the interior of the remnant, both of which
are consistent with the Type Ia scenario. We find an equipartition magnetic
field for the remnant of 28 G, a value typical of older SNRs and
consistent with other analyses which also infer an older remnant
Development and pilot evaluation of a personalized decision support intervention for low risk prostate cancer patients.
ObjectivesDevelopment and pilot evaluation of a personalized decision support intervention to help men with early-stage prostate cancer choose among active surveillance, surgery, and radiation.MethodsWe developed a decision aid featuring long-term survival and side effects data, based on focus group input and stakeholder endorsement. We trained premedical students to administer the intervention to newly diagnosed men with low-risk prostate cancer seen at the University of California, San Francisco. Before the intervention, and after the consultation with a urologist, we administered the Decision Quality Instrument for Prostate Cancer (DQI-PC). We hypothesized increases in two knowledge items from the DQI-PC: How many men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer will eventually die of prostate cancer? How much would waiting 3 months to make a treatment decision affect chances of survival? Correct answers were: "Most will die of something else" and "A little or not at all."ResultsThe development phase involved 6 patients, 1 family member, 2 physicians, and 5 other health care providers. In our pilot test, 57 men consented, and 44 received the decision support intervention and completed knowledge surveys at both timepoints. Regarding the two knowledge items of interest, before the intervention, 35/56 (63%) answered both correctly, compared to 36/44 (82%) after the medical consultation (P = .04 by chi-square test).ConclusionsThe intervention was associated with increased patient knowledge. Data from this pilot have guided the development of a larger scale randomized clinical trial to improve decision quality in men with prostate cancer being treated in community settings
Comparison of calibration factors for field-class dosimeters
This paper presents a comparison performed between two calibration laboratories in several radiation qualities, using dosimeters of varying quality as transfer instruments. The goal of this work was to investigate the viability of using field-class dosimeters for official comparisons and to determine if the calibration factors for field-class dosimeters are comparable between calibration laboratories within the stated measurement uncertainties. The results of the comparison were acceptable for high-quality electronic personal dosimeters in all radiation qualities, and such dosimeters could be used as transfer instruments. On the other hand, comparison results for low-quality dosimeters were often not acceptable, either due to pronounced energy dependence, low stability, or both. Such instruments are unreliable even under well-defined laboratory conditions, and their use in routine measurements may cause doubt in official data or influence public opinion. This problem is often hidden because many dosimeters are calibrated or verified only in 137Cs beams, where the deviations are the smallest. The largest differences are found for low-energy X-ray radiation qualities, where many dosimeters have significant overresponse
An X-ray Investigation of Three Supernova Remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We have investigated three SNRs in the LMC using multi-wavelength data. These
SNRs are generally fainter than the known sample and may represent a previously
missed population. One of our SNRs is the second LMC remnant analyzed which is
larger than any Galactic remnant for which a definite size has been
established. The analysis of such a large remnant contributes to the
understanding of the population of highly evolved SNRs. We have obtained X-ray
images and spectra of three of these recently identified SNRs using the
XMM-Newton observatory. These data, in conjunction with pre-existing optical
emission-line images and spectra, were used to determine the physical
conditions of the optical- and X-ray-emitting gas in the SNRs. We have compared
the morphologies of the SNRs in the different wavebands. The physical
properties of the warm ionized shell were determined from the H-alpha surface
brightness and the SNR expansion velocity. The X-ray spectra were fit with a
thermal plasma model and the physical conditions of the hot gas were derived
from the model fits. Finally, we have compared our observations with
simulations of SNR evolution
First release of the IPHAS catalogue of new extended planetary nebulae
Date of Acceptance: 30/06/2014We present the first results of our search for new, extended planetary nebulae (PNe) based on careful, systematic, visual scrutiny of the imaging data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS). The newly uncovered PNe will help to improve the census of this important population of Galactic objects that serve as key windows into the late-stage evolution of low- to intermediate-mass stars. They will also facilitate study of the faint end of the ensemble Galactic PN luminosity function. The sensitivity and coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction in the Galactic plane and/or those PNe in a more advanced evolutionary state and at larger distances compared to the general Galactic PN population. Using a set of newly revised optical diagnostic diagrams in combination with access to a powerful, new, multiwavelength imaging data base, we have identified 159 true, likely and possible PNe for this first catalogue release. The ability of IPHAS to unveil PNe at low Galactic latitudes and towards the Galactic Anticentre, compared to previous surveys, makes this survey an ideal tool to contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of the whole Galactic PN population.Peer reviewe
XMMU J0541.8-6659, a new supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The high sensitivity of the XMM-Newton instrumentation offers the opportunity
to study faint and extended sources in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies such
as the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in detail. The ROSAT PSPC survey of the LMC
has revealed more than 700 X-ray sources, among which there are 46 supernova
remnants (SNRs) and candidates. We have observed the field around one of the
most promising SNR candidates in the ROSAT PSPC catalogue, labelled [HP99] 456
with XMM-Newton, to determine its nature. We investigated the XMM-Newton data
along with new radio-continuum, near infrared and optical data. In particular,
spectral and morphological studies of the X-ray and radio data were performed.
The X-ray images obtained in different energy bands reveal two different
structures. Below 1.0 keV the X-ray emission shows the shell-like morphology of
an SNR with a diameter of ~73 pc, one of the largest known in the LMC. For its
thermal spectrum we estimate an electron temperature of (0.49 +/- 0.12)keV
assuming non-equilibrium ionisation. The X-ray images above 1.0 keV reveal a
less extended source within the SNR emission, located ~1' west of the centre of
the SNR and coincident with bright point sources detected in radio-continuum.
This hard component has an extent of 0.9' (i.e. ~13 pc at a distance of ~50
kpc) and a non-thermal spectrum. The hard source coincides in position with the
ROSAT source [HP99] 456 and shows an indication for substructure. We firmly
identify a new SNR in the LMC with a shell-like morphology and a thermal
spectrum. Assuming the SNR to be in the Sedov phase yields an age of ~23 kyr.
We explore possible associations of the hard non-thermal emitting component
with a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) or background active galactic nuclei (AGN).Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Hybrid assembly with long and short reads improves discovery of gene family expansions
BACKGROUND: Long-read and short-read sequencing technologies offer competing advantages for eukaryotic genome sequencing projects. Combinations of both may be appropriate for surveys of within-species genomic variation. METHODS: We developed a hybrid assembly pipeline called "Alpaca" that can operate on 20X long-read coverage plus about 50X short-insert and 50X long-insert short-read coverage. To preclude collapse of tandem repeats, Alpaca relies on base-call-corrected long reads for contig formation. RESULTS: Compared to two other assembly protocols, Alpaca demonstrated the most reference agreement and repeat capture on the rice genome. On three accessions of the model legume Medicago truncatula, Alpaca generated the most agreement to a conspecific reference and predicted tandemly repeated genes absent from the other assemblies. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest Alpaca is a useful tool for investigating structural and copy number variation within de novo assemblies of sampled populations
