PÉRDIDAS DE CARBONO EN SUELOS DE LA LLANURA COSTERA DE NAYARIT, MÉXICO
Se analizaron las pérdidas de carbono orgánico en suelos a partir de 12 perfiles localizados en el delta del río San Pedro y distribuidos por nivel geomorfológico en la llanura costera del estado de Nayarit, México. El estudio se realizó comparando el contenido de carbono de los suelos con mayor conservación bajo bosque y cultivados. Los niveles considerados para este análisis fueron llanura alta, llanura media y sus depresiones, llanura baja y barras costeras. Las reservas de carbono (RCO) se determinaron teniendo en cuenta la densidad aparente (Da), el espesor de cada horizonte y el contenido de carbono. Los resultados se ponderaron para las profundidades 0-20, 0-50 y 0-100 cm. Las pérdidas de carbono identificadas fueron del 36 % para suelos Cambisoles de la llanura alta, 40 % para Feozem y Cambisoles de la llanura media, 60 % en suelos Feozem y Solonetz de las depresiones de la llanura media, 67 % para Cambisoles de la llanura baja y 90 % para Arenosoles de las barras costeras. Se demostró que la actividad agrícola intensiva y continuada, ha ocasionado pérdidas en el contenido de carbono; así mismo, la capa agrícola (20 cm) resulta la más afectada por esta actividad antropogénica
Concurrent Calculations on Reconfigurable Logic Devices Applied to the Analysis of Video Images
This paper presents the design and implementation on FPGA devices of an algorithm for computing similarities between neighboring frames in a video sequence using luminance information. By taking advantage of the well-known flexibility of Reconfigurable Logic Devices, we have designed a hardware implementation of the algorithm used in video segmentation and indexing. The experimental results show the tradeoff between concurrent sequential resources and the functional blocks needed to achieve maximum operational speed while achieving minimum silicon area usage. To evaluate system efficiency, we compare the performance of the hardware solution to that of calculations done via software using general-purpose processors with and without an SIMD instruction set
Extraocular motoneurons of the adult rat show higher levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptor Flk-1 than other cranial motoneurons
Recent studies show a relationship between the deficit of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and motoneuronal degeneration, such as that occurring in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). VEGF delivery protects motoneurons from cell death and delayed neurodegeneration in animal models of ALS. Strikingly, extraocular motoneurons show lesser vulnerability to neurodegeneration in ALS compared to other cranial or spinal motoneurons. Therefore, the present study investigates possible differences in VEGF and its main receptor VEGFR-2 or Flk-1 between extraocular and non-extraocular brainstem motoneurons. We performed immunohistochemistry and Western blot to determine the presence of VEGF and Flk-1 in rat motoneurons located in the three extraocular motor nuclei (abducens, trochlear and oculomotor) and to compare it to that observed in two other brainstem nuclei (hypoglossal and facial) that are vulnerable to degeneration. Extraocular motoneurons presented higher amounts of VEGF and its receptor Flk-1 than other brainstem motoneurons, and thus these molecules could be participating in their higher resistance to neurodegeneration. In conclusion, we hypothesize that differences in VEGF availability and signaling could be a contributing factor to the different susceptibility of extraocular motoneurons, when compared with other motoneurons, in neurodegenerative diseases
Extraocular Motor System Exhibits a Higher Expression of Neurotrophins When Compared with Other Brainstem Motor Systems
Extraocular motoneurons resist degeneration in diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The main objective of the present work was to characterize the presence of neurotrophins in extraocular motoneurons and muscles of the adult rat. We also compared these results with those obtained from other cranial motor systems, such as facial and hypoglossal, which indeed suffer neurodegeneration. Immunocytochemical analysis was used to describe the expression of nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neurotrophin-3 in oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei of adult rats, and Western blots were used to describe the presence of neurotrophins in extraocular, facial (buccinator), and tongue muscles, which are innervated by the above-mentioned motoneurons. In brainstem samples, brain-derived neurotrophic factor was present both in extraocular and facial motoneuron somata, and to a lesser degree, in hypoglossal motoneurons. Neurotrophin-3 was present in extraocular motor nuclei, while facial and hypoglossal motoneurons were almost devoid of this protein. Finally, nerve growth factor was not present in the soma of any group of motoneurons, although it was present in dendrites of motoneurons located in the neuropil. Neuropil optical density levels were higher in extraocular motoneuron nuclei when compared with facial and hypoglossal nuclei. Neurotrophins could be originated in target muscles, since Western blot analyses revealed the presence of the three molecules in all sampled muscles, to a larger extent in extraocular muscles when compared with facial and tongue muscles. Performance analysis of AlGaAs/GaAs tunnel junctions for ultra-high concentration photovoltaics
An n(++)-GaAs/p(++)-AlGaAs tunnel junction with a peak current density of 10 100Acm(-2) is developed. This device is a tunnel junction for multijunction solar cells, grown lattice-matched on standard GaAs or Ge substrates, with the highest peak current density ever reported. The voltage drop for a current density equivalent to the operation of the multijunction solar cell up to 10 000 suns is below 5 mV. Trap-assisted tunnelling is proposed to be behind this performance, which cannot be justified by simple band-to-band tunnelling. The metal-organic vapour-phase epitaxy growth conditions, which are in the limits of the transport-limited regime, and the heavy tellurium doping levels are the proposed origins of the defects enabling trap-assisted tunnelling. The hypothesis of trap-assisted tunnelling is supported by the observed annealing behaviour of the tunnel junctions, which cannot be explained in terms of dopant diffusion or passivation. For the integration of these tunnel junctions into a triple-junction solar cell, AlGaAs barrier layers are introduced to suppress the formation of parasitic junctions, but this is found to significantly degrade the performance of the tunnel junctions. However, the annealed tunnel junctions with barrier layers still exhibit a peak current density higher than 2500Acm(-2) and a voltage drop at 10 000 suns of around 20 mV, which are excellent properties for tunnel junctions and mean they can serve as low-loss interconnections in multijunction solar cells working at ultra-high concentrations
Tractor_DB (version 2.0): a database of regulatory interactions in gamma-proteobacterial genomes
The version 2.0 of Tractor_DB is now accessible at its three international mirrors: , and . This database contains a collection of computationally predicted Transcription Factors' binding sites in gamma-proteobacterial genomes. These data should aid researchers in the design of microarray experiments and the interpretation of their results. They should also facilitate studies of Comparative Genomics of the regulatory networks of this group of organisms. In this paper we describe the main improvements incorporated to the database in the past year and a half which include incorporating information on the regulatory networks of 13—increasing to 30—new gamma-proteobacteria and developing a new computational strategy to complement the putative sites identified by the original weight matrix-based approach. We have also added dynamically generated navigation tabs to the navigation interfaces. Moreover, we developed a new interface that allows users to directly retrieve information on the conservation of regulatory interactions in the 30 genomes included in the database by navigating a map that represents a core of the known Escherichia coli regulatory network
The ALHAMBRA survey : Estimation of the clustering signal encoded in the cosmic variance
The relative cosmic variance () is a fundamental source of
uncertainty in pencil-beam surveys and, as a particular case of count-in-cell
statistics, can be used to estimate the bias between galaxies and their
underlying dark-matter distribution. Our goal is to test the significance of
the clustering information encoded in the measured in the ALHAMBRA
survey. We measure the cosmic variance of several galaxy populations selected
with band luminosity at as the intrinsic dispersion in
the number density distribution derived from the 48 ALHAMBRA subfields. We
compare the observational with the cosmic variance of the dark
matter expected from the theory, . This provides an
estimation of the galaxy bias . The galaxy bias from the cosmic variance is
in excellent agreement with the bias estimated by two-point correlation
function analysis in ALHAMBRA. This holds for different redshift bins, for red
and blue subsamples, and for several band luminosity selections. We find
that increases with the band luminosity and the redshift, as expected
from previous work. Moreover, red galaxies have a larger bias than blue
galaxies, with a relative bias of . Our results
demonstrate that the cosmic variance measured in ALHAMBRA is due to the
clustering of galaxies and can be used to characterise the affecting
pencil-beam surveys. In addition, it can also be used to estimate the galaxy

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Physical Properties and Purity of a Galaxy Cluster Sample Selected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect
We present optical and X-ray properties for the first confirmed galaxy
cluster sample selected by the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect from 148 GHz maps over
455 square degrees of sky made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. These
maps, coupled with multi-band imaging on 4-meter-class optical telescopes, have
yielded a sample of 23 galaxy clusters with redshifts between 0.118 and 1.066.
Of these 23 clusters, 10 are newly discovered. The selection of this sample is
approximately mass limited and essentially independent of redshift. We provide
optical positions, images, redshifts and X-ray fluxes and luminosities for the
full sample, and X-ray temperatures of an important subset. The mass limit of
the full sample is around 8e14 Msun, with a number distribution that peaks
around a redshift of 0.4. For the 10 highest significance SZE-selected cluster
candidates, all of which are optically confirmed, the mass threshold is 1e15
Msun and the redshift range is 0.167 to 1.066. Archival observations from
Chandra, XMM-Newton, and ROSAT provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures that
are broadly consistent with this mass threshold. Our optical follow-up
procedure also allowed us to assess the purity of the ACT cluster sample.
Eighty (one hundred) percent of the 148 GHz candidates with signal-to-noise
ratios greater than 5.1 (5.7) are confirmed as massive clusters. The reported
sample represents one of the largest SZE-selected sample of massive clusters
over all redshifts within a cosmologically-significant survey volume, which
will enable cosmological studies as well as future studies on the evolution,
morphology, and stellar populations in the most massive clusters in the
