    Kinetically Dominated FRII Radio Sources

    The existence of FR II objects that are kinetically dominated, the jet kinetic luminosity, QQ, is larger than the total thermal luminosity (IR to X-ray) of the accretion flow, LbolL_{bol}, is of profound theoretical interest. Such objects are not expected in most theoretical models of the central engine of radio loud AGN. Thus, establishing such a class of objects is an important diagnostic for filtering through the myriad of theoretical possibilities. This paper attempts to establish a class of quasars that have existed in a state of kinetic dominance, R(t)Q(t)/Lbol(t)>1R(t)\equiv Q(t)/L_{bol}(t)>1, at some epoch, tt. It is argued that the 10 quasars in this article with a long term time average Q(t)Q(t), Qˉ\bar{Q}, that exceed LEddL_{Edd} are likely to have satisfied the condition R(t)>1R(t)>1 either presently or in the past based on the rarity of Lbol>LEddL_{bol}>L_{Edd} quasars. Finally, the existence of these sources is discussed in the context of the theory of the central engine.Comment: To appear in MNRAS Letter

    Estimation of the abundance of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, by age groups and regions within the Eastern Pacific Ocean

    ENGLISH: Monthly estimates of the abundance of yellowfin tuna by age groups and regions within the eastern Pacific Ocean during 1970-1988 are made, using purse-seine catch rates, length-frequency samples, and results from cohort analysis. The numbers of individuals caught of each age group in each logged purse-seine set are estimated, using the tonnage from that set and length-frequency distribution from the "nearest" length-frequency sample(s). Nearest refers to the closest length frequency sample(s) to the purse-seine set in time, distance, and set type (dolphin associated, floating object associated, skipjack associated, none of these, and some combinations). Catch rates are initially calculated as the estimated number of individuals of the age group caught per hour of searching. Then, to remove the effects of set type and vessel speed, they are standardized, using separate weiznted generalized linear models for each age group. The standardized catch rates at the center of each 2.5 0 quadrangle-month are estimated, using locally-weighted least-squares regressions on latitude, longitude and date, and then combined into larger regions. Catch rates within these regions are converted to numbers of yellowfin, using the mean age composition from cohort analysis. The variances of the abundance estimates within regions are large for 0-, 1-, and 5-year-olds, but small for 1.5- to 4-year-olds, except during periods of low fishing activity. Mean annual catch rate estimates for the entire eastern Pacific Ocean are significantly positively correlated with mean abundance estimates from cohort analysis for age groups ranging from 1.5 to 4 years old. Catch-rate indices of abundance by age are expected to be useful in conjunction with data on reproductive biology to estimate total egg production within regions. The estimates may also be useful in understanding geographic and temporal variations in age-specific availability to purse seiners, as well as age-specific movements. SPANISH: Se calculan estimaciones mensuales de la abundancia del atún aleta amarilla por grupos de edad y regiones en el Océano Pacífico oriental durante 1970-1988, usando tasas de captura cerquera, muestras de frecuencia de talla, y los resultados del análisis de cohortes.     A New Solution to the Plasma Starved Event Horizon Magnetosphere: Application to the Forked Jet in M87

The detailed analysis presented here indicates that the spectral luminosity of the central spine of the jet in M87 is a few percent of that of the surrounding hollow jet 200-400 μ as from the central black hole. Furthermore, recent jet models indicate that a hollow "tubular" jet can explain a wide range of plausible broadband spectra originating from jetted plasma located within ~30 μ as of the central black hole, including the 230 GHz correlated flux detected by the Event Horizon Telescope. Most importantly, these hollow jets from the inner accretion flow have an intrinsic power capable of energizing the global jet out to kiloparsec scales. Thus motivated, this paper considers new models of the event horizon magnetosphere (EHM) in low luminosity accretion systems. Contrary to some models, the spine is not an invisible powerful jet. It is an intrinsically weak jet. In the new EHM solution, the accreted poloidal magnetic flux is weak and the background photon field is weak. It is shown how this accretion scenario naturally results in the dissipation of the accreted poloidal magnetic flux in the EHM not the accumulation of poloidal flux required for a powerful jet. The new solution indicates less large scale poloidal magnetic flux (and jet power) in the EHM than in the surrounding accretion flow and cannot support significant EHM driven jets.Peer reviewe

    External Sources of Poynting Flux in MHD Simulations of Black Hole Ergospheres

    This article investigates the physics that is responsible for creating the outgoing Poynting flux emanating from the ergosphere of a rotating black hole in the limit that the magnetic energy density greatly exceeds the plasma rest mass density (magnetically dominated limit). The underlying physics is derived from published 3-D simulations that obey the general relativistic equations of perfect magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is found that the majority of the outgoing radial Poynting flux emitted from the magnetically dominated regions of the ergosphere is injected into the magnetosphere by a source outside of the event horizon. It is concluded that the primary source of the Poynting flux is associated with inertial forces in the magnetically dominated region proper or in the lateral boundaries of the region. However, the existing numerical data does not rule out the possibility that large computational errors are actually the primary source of the Poynting flux.Comment: To appear in MNRA

    Reissner-Nordstrom black hole lensing

    In this paper we study the strong gravitational lensing scenario where the lens is a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We obtain the basic equations and show that, as in the case of Schwarzschild black hole, besides the primary and secondary images, two infinite sets of relativistic images are formed. We find analytical expressions for the positions and amplifications of the relativistic images. The formalism is applied to the case of a low-mass black hole placed at the galactic halo.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    The Velocity Field of Quasar Broad Emission Line Gas

    In this Letter, the broad emission line (BEL) profiles of superluminal quasars with apparent jet velocities, βa>10\beta_{a}>10, (ultraluminal QSOs, or ULQSOs hereafter) are studied as a diagnostic of the velocity field of the BEL emitting gas in quasars. The ULQSOs are useful because they satisfy a very strict kinematical constraint, their parsec scale jets must be propagating within 1212^{\circ} of the line of sight. We know the orientation of these objects with great certainty. The large BEL FWHM, 3,000km/s6,000km/s\sim 3,000 \mathrm{km/s} - 6,000 \mathrm{km/s}, in ULQSOs tend to indicate that the BEL gas has a larger component of axial velocity (either random or in a wind) along the jet direction than previously thought.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letter

    A variability analysis of low-latitude unidentified gamma-ray sources

    We present a study of 40 low-latitude unidentified 3EG gamma-ray sources which were found to be not positionally coincident with any known class of potential gamma-ray emitters in the Galaxy (Romero, Benaglia & Torres, 1999). We have performed a variability analysis which reveals that many of these 40 sources are variable. These sources have, in addition, a steep mean value of the gamma-ray spectral index, =2.41±0.2 = 2.41 \pm 0.2, which, combined with the high level of variability seems to rule out a pulsar origin. The positional coincidences with uncatalogued candidates to supernova remnants were also studied. Only 7 sources in the sample are spatially coincident with these candidates, a result that is shown to be consistent with the expected level of pure chance association. A complementary search for weak radio counterparts was also conducted and the results are presented as an extensive table containing all significant point-like radio sources within the 40 EGRET fields. We argue that in order to produce the high variability, steep gamma-ray spectra, and absence of strong radio counterparts observed in some of the gamma-ray sources of our sample a new class of objects should be postulated, and we analyze a viable candidate.Comment: Paper updated to match the accepted version to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2001.     Diagnostics of Quasar Broad Absorption Line Geometry: X-Ray Observations and Two-dimensional Optical Spectroscopy

    A new generation of sensitive X-ray measurements are indicating that the existence of X-ray attenuation column densities, NH > 1024 cm-2, is quite common among broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs). This is significant to the geometry of the broad absorption line (BAL) outflow. In particular, such an X-ray shield also shields equatorial accretion disk winds from the UV, thereby preventing high-velocity equatorial outflows from being launched. By contrast, bipolar winds initiated by continuum radiation pressure from the funnel of a slim accretion disk flare outward (like a trumpet) and offer vastly different absorbing columns to the X-ray and UV emission that are emitted from distinct regions of the disk, ~6M and ~10M-40M, respectively (where M is the radius of the black hole). Recent numerical work indicates that it is also possible to launch bipolar outflows from the inner regions of a thin disk. The recent discovery with VLBI that the Galactic analog of a BALQSO, the X-ray binary Circinus X-1 (with high-velocity P Cygni X-ray absorption lines), is viewed virtually along the radio jet axis (and therefore along the spin axis of the black hole and the normal to the accretion disk) has rekindled interest in the bipolar models of BALQSOs. We explore this possibility by studying the nearest BALQSO, Mrk 231. High-resolution two-dimensional optical spectroscopy and VLBI mappings of the radio jet axis indicate that the BAL outflow is parallel to the parsec-scale radio jet

    Jets and gamma-ray emission from isolated accreting black holes

    The large number of isolated black holes (IBHs) in the Galaxy, estimated to be 10^8, implies a very high density of 10^-4 pc^-3 and an average distance between IBHs of 10 pc. Our study shows that the magnetic flux, accumulated on the horizon of an IBH because of accretion of interstellar matter, allows the Blandford-Znajeck mechanism to be activated. Thus, electron-positron jets can be launched. We have performed 2D numerical modelling which allowed the jet power to be estimated. Their inferred properties make such jets a feasible electron accelerator which, in molecular clouds, allows electron energy to be boosted up to 1 PeV. For the conditions expected in molecular clouds the radiative cooling time should be comparable to the escape time. Thus these sources can contribute both to the population of unidentified point-like sources and to the local cosmic ray (CR) electron spectrum. The impact of the generated electron CRs depends on the diffusion rate inside molecular clouds (MCs). If the diffusion regime in a MC is similar to Galactic diffusion, the produced electrons should rapidly escape the cloud and contribute to the Galactic CR population at very high energies >100 TeV. However, due to the modest jet luminosity (at the level of 10^35 erg s^-1) and low filling factor of MC, these sources cannot make a significant contribution to the spectrum of cosmic ray electrons at lower energies. On the other hand, if the diffusion within MCs operates at a rate close to the Bohm limit, the CR electrons escaping from the source should be confined in the cloud, significantly contributing to the local density of CRs. The IC emission of these locally-generated CRs may explain the variety of gamma ray spectra detected from nearby MCs.Comment: 6 pages, accepted by MNRA

    The central structure of Broad Absorption Line QSOs: observational characteristics in the cm-mm wavelength domain

    Accounting for ~20% of the total QSO population, Broad Absorption Line QSOs are still an unsolved problem in the AGN context. They present wide troughs in the UV spectrum, due to material with velocities up to 0.2 c toward the observer. The two models proposed in literature try to explain them as a particular phase of the evolution of QSOs or as normal QSOs, but seen from a particular line of sight. We built a statistically complete sample of Radio-Loud BAL QSOs, and carried out an observing campaign to piece together the whole spectrum in the cm wavelength domain, and highlight all the possible differences with respect to a comparison sample of Radio-Loud non-BAL QSOs. VLBI observations at high angular resolution have been performed, to study the pc-scale morphology of these objects. Finally, we tried to detect a possible dust component with observations at mm-wavelengths. Results do not seem to indicate a young age for all BAL QSOs. Instead a variety of orientations and morphologies have been found, constraining the outflows foreseen by the orientation model to have different possible angles with respect to the jet axis
