The urban Duque da Terceira Garden, in the main town of Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira, Azores), was investigated to describe the species composition of moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera). Moths were sampled with two methods: SLAM traps (between April and September 2017) and light trapping (two sessions in the summer of 2017). A total of 42 taxa were sampled with the addition of 19 new records for Duque da Terceira Garden, five of which were also new records for Terceira Island. The five species recorded as new for Terceira were subjected to an exhaustive taxonomic analysis. In addition, we revised the colonization status of some species. Our results show that urban gardens may help the establishment of exotic species and that it is necessary to monitor and control how these species established in urban environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abreviaturas:ABSTRACT - Application of SIPACE to poultry slaughters - Poultry is one of the most popular meat among consumers. This meat and its products have been associated with important outbreaks of Salmonella infection in humans. The reduction of the prevalence of Salmonella is one of the goals of the National Salmonella Control Programmes (PNCS). Since the slaughterhouse is the final destination of the poultry it was sought to classify the data registered by the Veterinary Medical Inspectors (MVIS) in the Plan of Approval and Control of Establishments Information System (SIPACE) of the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV), between 2012 and 2014, regarding sanitary slaughters due to Salmonella and understand the impact of the these Programmes in particular in the number of slaughtering due to Salmonella, thus it was found that there was in general an increase in the number of sanitary slaughters due to Salmonella and, in the comparison of sanitary slaughters of positive flocks with the PNCS data there were some disparities, especially in the number of animals slaughtered and in the regions of origin of these animals. The awareness of stakeholders and the optimization of the data recording system plays a significant role in the continuous improvement and effectiveness of these Programmes and subsequent phases.N/

Comparative study of plantar pressure during step exercise in different floor conditions

Mechanical load has been estimated during step exercise based on ground reaction force (GRF) obtained by force platforms. It is not yet accurately known whether these measures reflect foot contact forces once the latter depend on footwear and are potentially modified by the compliant properties of the step bench. The aim of the study was to compare maximal and mean plantar pressure (PP), and maximal GRF obtained by pressure insoles after performing seven movements both over two metal force platforms and over the step bench. Fifteen step-experienced females performed the movements at the cadences of 130 and 140 beats per minute. PP and GRF (estimated from PP) obtained for each floor condition were compared. Maximal PP ranged from 29.27 +/- 9.94 to 47.07 +/- 12.88 N/cm2 as for metal platforms, and from 28.20 +/- 9.32 to 43.00 +/- 13.80 N/cm2 as for the step bench. Mean PP ranged from 11.09 +/- 1.62 to 14.32 +/- 2.06 N/cm2 (platforms) and from 10.71 +/- 1.54 to 14.22 +/- 1.77 N/cm2 (step bench). GRF (normalized body weight) ranged from 1.43 +/- 0.14 to 2.41 +/- 0.24 BW (platforms) and from 1.38 +/- 0.14 to 2.36 +/- 0.19 BW (step bench). No significant statistical differences were obtained for most of the comparisons between the two conditions tested. The results suggest that metal force platform surfaces are suitable to assess mechanical load during this physical activity. The forces applied to the foot are similar to the softer step bench and the hard force platform surface. This may reflect the ability of the performers to adapt their movement patterns to normalize the impact forces in different floor conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Motor Skills and Visual Deficits in Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Narrative Review

    Get PDF
Background: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a developmental disorder in which numerous comorbidities seem to coexist, such as motor and visual impairment and some executive functions; Methods: A narrative review on motor and visual deficits in children with DCD was carried out; Results and Discussion: Fine and gross motor skills are affected in children with DCD. In addition, they seem to be related to visual deficits, such as difficulty in visual perception, sensory processing and visual memory. Limitations have also been found in accommodation. Interventions in children with DCD should be aimed at improving both aspects, since vision affects motor skills and vice versa; Conclusions: In children with DCD, who present a marked deficit in global shape processing, it causes an association between deficiencies in visual perception and motor skills.Partial funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málag

    Get PDF
With the complexity of today’s globalized world, it is important to understand the dynamics of organizations and how they contribute to economic dynamics. This is why we intend to review the recent articles that have been developed around Entrepreneurship, Business Dynamics and Employment, from the perspective of economic growth. To this end, we begin by elucidating some theories linked to entrepreneurship and economic growth that have been put forward by the most important thinkers in each feld, and from there we compile the most relevant research in recent years that links these issues. The main fndings lie in the vital importance of entrepreneurship for economic growth, however, the increase in employment depends largely on which economic sectors companies are created in. Under this approach, some conclusions are drawn and discussions proposed that could give rise to future research on the subject

Development and evaluation of an in-house database for quick identification of Burkholderia contaminans by MALDI-TOF MS

La espectrometría de masas (EM) (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight) MALDI-TOF demostró ser una herramienta robusta para la identificación de numerosos grupos taxonómicos. No obstante, presenta limitaciones. However, it has limitations. A key advantage of this technique is the flexibility for the incorporation of protein profiles of microorganisms not included in the commercial database. Due to the prevalence of Burkholderia contaminans in fibrocystic patients in Argentina and the fact that rapid and reliable microbiological diagnosis is crucial in them, MALDI-TOF MS emerges as a strategic tool. The aim of this work was to develop an additional database with peptide spectra of reference isolates of B. contaminans. This database demonstrated to be successful for the identification of 97% of the isolates analyzed. Therefore, MALDI-TOF MS with the extended database was a useful tool for the identification and differentiation of other related species to B. contaminans.Fil: Cipolla, Lucía. Acute gastrointestinal illness is an important public-health issue worldwide. Burden-of-illness studies have not previously been conducted in Cuba. The objective of the study was to determine the magnitude, distribution, and burden of self-reported acute gastrointestinal illness in Cuba. A retrospective, cross-sectional survey was conducted in three sentinel sites during June-July 2005 (rainy season) and during November 2005–January 2006 (dry season). Households were randomly selected from a list maintained by the medical offices in each site. One individual per household was selected to complete a questionnaire in a face-to-face interview. The case definition was three or more bouts of loose stools in a 24-hour period within the last 30 days. In total, 97.3% of 6,576 interviews were completed. The overall prevalence of acute gastrointestinal illness was 10.6%. The risk of acute gastrointestinal illness was higher during the rainy season (odds ratio [OR]=3.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.18-4.66) in children (OR=3.12, 95% CI 2.24-4.36) and teens (OR=2.27, 95% CI 1.51-3.41) compared to people aged 25-54 years, in males (OR=1.24, 95% CI 1.04-1.47), and in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba (OR=1.33, 95% CI 1.11-1.61). Of 680 cases, 17.1-38.1% visited a physician, depending on sentinel site. Of the cases who visited a physician, 33.3-53.9% were requested to submit a stool sample, and of those, 72.7-100.0% complied. Of the cases who sought medical care, 16.7- 61.5% and 0-31.6% were treated with antidiarrhoeals and antibiotics respectively. Acute gastrointestinal illness represented a substantial burden of health compared to developed countries. Targeting the identified risk factors when allocating resources for education, food safety, and infrastructure might lower the morbidity associated with acute gastrointestinal illness
