Pioglitazone Prevents Capillary Rarefaction in Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats Independently of Glucose Control and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression
Background/Aims: Reduction of capillary network density occurs early in the development of metabolic syndrome and may be relevant for the precipitation of diabetes. Agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma transcription factor are vasculoprotective, but their capacity for structural preservation of the microcirculation is unclear. Methods: Male Wistar rats were rendered diabetic by streptozotocin and treated with pioglitazone in chow for up to 12 weeks. Capillary density was determined in heart and skeletal muscle after platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) immunostaining. Hallmarks of apoptosis and angiogenesis were determined. Results: Capillary density deteriorated progressively in the presence of hyperglycemia (from 971/mm(2) to 475/mm(2) in quadriceps muscle during 13 weeks). Pioglitazone did not influence plasma glucose, left ventricular weight, or body weight but nearly doubled absolute and relative capillary densities compared to untreated controls (1.2 vs. 0.6 capillaries/myocyte in heart and 1.5 vs. 0.9 capillaries/myocyte in quadriceps muscle) after 13 weeks of diabetes. No antiapoptotic or angiogenic influence of pioglitazone was detected while a reduced expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-3 alpha and PPAR coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1 alpha) mRNA as well as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein possibly occurred as a consequence of improved vascularization. Conclusion: Pioglitazone preserves microvascular structure in diabetes independently of improvements in glycemic control and by a mechanism unrelated to VEGF-mediated angiogenesis. Direct measurement of the mass difference between top and antitop quarks
We present a direct measurement of the mass difference between top and
antitop quarks (dm) in lepton+jets top-antitop final states using the "matrix
element" method. The purity of the lepton+jets sample is enhanced for
top-antitop events by identifying at least one of the jet as originating from a
b quark. The analyzed data correspond to 3.6 fb-1 of proton-antiproton
collisions at 1.96 TeV acquired by D0 in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. The combination of the e+jets and mu+jets channels yields dm = 0.8
+/- 1.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the standard
model expectation of no mass difference.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Events with Multiple Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron
The combination of searches performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association
with b quarks is reported. The data, corresponding to 2.6 fb-1 of integrated
luminosity at CDF and 5.2 fb-1 at D0, have been collected in final states
containing three or more b jets. Upper limits are set on the cross section
multiplied by the branching ratio varying between 44 pb and 0.7 pb in the Higgs
boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, assuming production of a narrow scalar boson.
Significant enhancements to the production of Higgs bosons can be found in
theories beyond the standard model, for example in supersymmetry. The results
are interpreted as upper limits in the parameter space of the minimal
supersymmetric standard model in a benchmark scenario favoring this decay mode.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel at D0
We measure the top quark mass (mt) in ppbar collisions at a center of mass
energy of 1.96 TeV using dilepton ttbar->W+bW-bbar->l+nubl-nubarbbar events,
where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The
data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain mt = 174.0 +- 1.8(stat)
+- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average mt =
173.3 +- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the
dilepton channel.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair in events with one charged lepton and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data
collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the
Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a
neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times
the standard model value.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett (v2 contains clarifications suggested by

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7
(3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in the lepton+jets channel in proton-antiproton collisions at =1.96 TeV
We present a measurement of the inclusive top quark pair production cross
section in \ppbar collisions at (\sqrt{s}=1.96) TeV utilizing data
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \lumi\ collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing
one high- isolated electron or muon and at least two jets, and we
perform three analyses: one exploiting specific kinematic features of \ttbar
events, the second using -jet identification, and the third using both
techniques to separate \ttbar\ signal from background. In the third case, we
determine simultaneously the cross section and the ratio of the
production rates of +heavy flavor jets and +light flavor jets, which
reduces the impact of the systematic uncertainties related to the background
estimation. Assuming a top quark mass of 172.5 GeV, we obtain
pb. This result agrees with
predictions of the standard model.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
A search for charged massive long-lived particles
We report on a search for charged massive long-lived particles (CMLLPs),
based on 5.2 fb of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We search for events in which one
or more particles are reconstructed as muons but have speed and ionization
energy loss inconsistent with muons produced in beam collisions.
CMLLPs are predicted in several theories of physics beyond the standard model.
We exclude pair-produced long-lived gaugino-like charginos below 267 GeV and
higgsino-like charginos below 217 GeV at 95% C.L., as well as long-lived scalar
top quarks with mass below 285 GeV.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Letter
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair in events with two oppositely-charged leptons using the full CDF data set
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events
consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z
boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on
the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function
of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a
limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.Comment: To be submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
