    SHELTER IN PLACE: Executive Order by the Governor to Ensure a Safe & Healthy Georgia

    The Order required all visitors and residents of Georgia to practice social distancing in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines; prohibited businesses in Georgia from allowing groups of more than ten people to gather at any single location; imposed a mandatory shelter-in-place requirement for all visitors and residents of Georgia except for essential workers, as defined within the Order; and laid out guidelines for how businesses would operate during the quarantine. Further, the Order limited restaurant services and closed certain businesses, including gyms and bowling alleys. The Order also superseded all local Orders purporting to regulate the same subject matter and declared violations of the Order’s requirements to be a misdemeanor

    The influence of individual metering on water consumption in multi-family dwellings

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 1999.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 48-49).The Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not allow residential landlords to bill tenants for water consumption. Data on water consumption patterns of owner occupants and renters was gathered from three Massachusetts towns and cities: Brookline, Cambridge, and Boston. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the data. Renters who are not billed for water consumption were found to use a statistically significant greater amount of water than their owner occupant counterparts who pay for their own consumption. Analyses of similar studies in other states are also contained. A legal review and summary provides information on the legal framework that allows landlords in other states to pass on water costs to the tenants. Current legal impediments to implementation of water submetering in Massachusetts as well as proposed legislation are discussed. The author recommends the adoption of water submetering policy by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a way to promote conservation of natural resources and as a way to make individuals equitably responsible for their water consumption. The author believes such policy will aid in reducing overall water consumption as well as wastewater creation and the need to process it.by Lane P. Gordon.S.M

One hundred and twenty-four healthy participants viewed their body for five minutes directly or via a mirror, and then completed a 20-item questionnaire designed to capture subjective experiences of the body. PCA revealed a two-component structure for both direct and mirror conditions, comprising body evaluations (and alienation) and unusual feelings and perceptions. The relationship between these components and pre-existing tendencies for appearance anxiety, body dysmorphic-type beliefs, dissociative symptomatology, self-objectification and delusion ideation further supported the similarity between direct and mirror conditions; however, the occurrence of strange experiences like those reported to occur during prolonged face viewing was not confirmed. These results suggest that, despite obvious differences in visual feedback, observing the body via a mirror (as an outside observer) is subjectively equivalent to observing the body directly (from our own viewpoint).Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    In-Use Emissions Testing of Diesel-Driven Buses in Southampton:Is Selective Catalytic Reduction as Effective as Fleet Operators Think?

    Despite the continuously tightening emissions legislation, urban concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain at harmful levels. Road transport is responsible for a large fraction, wherein diesel engines are the principal culprits. Turbocharged diesel engines have long been preferred in heavy duty applications, due to their torque delivery and low fuel consumption. Fleet operators are under pressure to understand and control the emissions of their vehicles, yet the performance of emissions abatement technology in real-world driving is largely unquantified. The most popular NOx abatement technology for heavy duty diesel vehicles is selective catalytic reduction. In this work, we empirically determine the efficiency of a factory-fitted SCR system in realworld driving by instrumenting passenger buses with both a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) and a custom built telematics unit to record key parameters from the vehicle diagnostics systems. Wefindthateveninrelativelyfavourableconditions, while there is some improvement due to the use of SCR, the vehicles operate far from the design emissions targets. The archival value of this paper is in quantification of real world emissions versus design levels and the factors responsible for the discrepancy, as well as in examination of technologies to reduce this difference

    Ingestive behaviour and forage intake responses of young and mature steers to the vertical differentiation of sugarcane in pen and grazing studies

    SUMMARY Sugarcane is an important forage resource in sub-tropical and tropical areas as it is used during the winter or dry season when the growth rate of pastures is significantly reduced. The current research study assessed the effect of four vertical sections of sugarcane in a pen trial and the level of sugarcane utilization in a grazing trial on the ingestive behaviour and forage intake of two age groups of steers (1 and 2 years old). The pen trial was comprised of two simultaneous 4 × 4 balanced Latin square designs (one for each age group of animals) of four periods, four animals and four feeding treatments, which consisted of four equal vertical sections of sugarcane. Dry matter (DM) and digestible DM (DDM) intake per kilogram of metabolic weight declined gradually from top to bottom of the sugarcane, with no significant differences between the age groups of steers. This difference in intake was associated with a decline in intake of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) as a proportion of the liveweight of the animal and an increase of total chewing time per kilogram of DM or NDF from top to bottom of the sugarcane. It was concluded that the toughness of plant material played a significant role regulating intake, which was higher for the top sections of sugarcane. In the grazing trial, steers of both age groups grazed down sugarcane in three plots over 9 days. Steers grazed up to four distinctive grazing strata. Digestible DM intake (DDM intake) was high at low levels of horizontal utilization of the top grazing stratum but DDM intake started to decline sharply when this stratum was removed in 0·92 of paddock area (i.e. equivalent to 0·08 of the pasture area remaining un-grazed). It was concluded that the proportion of un-grazed area of the pasture can be used as a grazing management strategy to control forage intake for sugarcane
