Gamification, citizen science, and civic technologies: In search of the common good
In this paper, we discuss the importance of gameplay as a valuable tool in citizen sensing initiatives aimed at enabling creative collaboration and civic engagement. We present a review of selected citizen science and civic technologies’ projects highlighting an emerging culture of massive collaborative initiatives that make use of crowdsourcing, enabling users to voluntarily contribute their time, effort and resources towards scientific research and civic issues. Moreover, we discuss how these initiatives could benefit from the inclusion of gameplay in their interaction processes. For that matter, we present a gamified citizen sensing project we are devising for users to enter and retrieve information on commercially available food products which contain ingredients associated with an increased risk of cancer and other diseases. Through gameplay, we expect to crowdsource an open database of potentially unhealthy food products, raising awareness among consumers about the risks of certain artificial additives. Finally, we argue that the use of gamification processes can engage voluntary participation in initiatives aimed at citizenship – including those which demand complex and repetitive tasks for the collection of data – and call for a more ethical, critical, and meaningful use of these new potential technologies, and for greater awareness of our new civic responsibilities. Keywords: interaction design, gamification, citizen sensing, mobile applications, artificial food additives

Diabetes mellitus, metformin and head and neck cancer
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM (Diabetes Mellitus)) is directly associated with some cancers. However, studies on the association between diabetes mellitus and head and neck cancer (HNC (Head and Neck Cancer)) have rendered controversial results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between DM and HNC, as well as the impact of metformin use on the risk of HNC. Material and methods: This case-control study was conducted within the framework of the Brazilian Head and Neck Genome Project in 2011-2014. The study included 1021 HNC cases with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck admitted to five large hospitals in Sao Paulo state. A total of 1063 controls were selected in the same hospitals. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using unconditional logistic regression. Results: Diabetic participants had a decreased risk of HNC (OR = 0.68; 95% CI: 0.49-0.95) than nondiabetic participants, and this risk was further decreased among diabetic metformin users (OR = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.29-0.99). Diabetic metformin users that were current smokers (OR = 0.13; 95% CI: 0.04-0.44) or had an alcohol consumption of >40 g/day (OR = 0.31; 95% CI: 0.11-0.88) had lower risk of HNC than equivalent non-diabetic participants. Conclusion: The risk of HNC was decreased among diabetic participants; metformin use may at least partially explain this inverse association. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Peer reviewe
Espinheira-santa (Monteverdia ilicifolia) is a native plant of Brazil widely used in folk medicine because it has several therapeutic properties. Regarding the pollination biology and seed dispersal of this species, there is no information available in the literature. In this study, pollinators and dispersers of M. ilicifolia were observed and identified, as well as the behavior of these biological agents during the period of flowering and fruiting. In addition, the frequency of pollinator visits and the efficiency of the seed disperser were recorded. It was verified that in espinheira-santa, pollination is carried out by diptera and by hymenoptera. Among the main groups of pollinators are the flies, being Lucilia eximia, Limnophora sp. and Eristalis sp. the most frequent, and the wasps, in which Brachygastra mellifica, Polistes canadensis, Mischocyttarus sp. and one species of the Tiphiidae family were the most frequent. Eight species of birds consumed diaspores (arils with seeds), acting as dispersers of this species. However, the following birds were more efficient in the dispersion of seeds: Tangara sayaca, Elaenia sp. and Pipraeidea bonariensis. In this sense, M. ilicifolia is a species that has entomophilous pollination and ornithochoric dispersion. POTENTIAL TRAPS WITH FERMENTED BANANA AS AN ATTRACTANT TO CAPTURE BEETLES (INSECTA: COLEOPTERA)
Understanding the influence on resource use, reproductive behavior, niche occupation and anthropic changes is also associated with a better definition of collection methods for the Coleoptera fauna. In Brazil, few were officially standardized regarding the use of fruits as an attractant for capturing the group. Thus, we evaluated here the potential of traps with fermented banana attractants to capture beetles in an area of the Pampa Biome in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, RS, Brazil

Epoxidation of glycals with oxone-acetone-tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate: a convenient access to simple beta-D-glycosides and to alpha-D-mannosamine and D-talosamine donors
International audienceThe addition of a phase transfer catalyst during the epoxidation of perbenzylated glycals with oxone-acetone under biphasic conditions allows their complete epoxidation. The epoxides were readily transformed into methyl 1,2-trans-beta-D-glycosides or 1,2-trans-beta-D-glycopyranosyl azides (D-gluco and-D-galacto configurations) bearing a free hydroxyl group at the 2-position. These glycosyl azides were converted to alkyl 1,2-trans-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-pyranosides or alkyl 2-allyloxycarbonylamino-2deoxy-alpha-D-pyranosides (D-manno and D-talo configurations) by a Staudinger reaction and a double inversion of configuration at C-1 and C-2. Chemical and physical properties of alginate-like exopolymers of aerobic granules and flocs produced from different wastewaters
The influence of wastewater (WW) composition and the bioaggregates types (floccular vs. aerobic granular sludge - AGS) on the content, physical-chemical, hydrogel and rheological properties of Alginate-Like Exopolymers (ALE) was studied. Results showed that ALE are a complex mixture of proteins, humic acids and polysaccharides. Overall, rather similar ALE content and composition was observed for the different types of sludge. Only the AGS fed with acetate and propionate yielded significantly larger amount of ALE (261 ± 33 mg VSALE/g VSsludge, +49%) and of uronic sugars in ALE (254 ± 32 mgglucuronic acid/g VSALE, +62%) than bioaggregates fed with no/very little volatile fatty acids. Mannuronic acids are involved in the cohesion of the hydrogels. ALE hydrogels elasticity changed significantly with the type/origin of the bioaggregates. ALE hydrogels elasticity from AGS was always higher than from flocs when fed with real WW. Hence, different types of sludge impact the properties of the recovered ALE.ISSN:1873-2976ISSN:0960-852

Desafios na consecução do Projeto Museu de Ciências Morfológicas.
Apesar do empenho de algumas
A disponibilidade
