    Get PDF
This paper intends to perform a strategic diagnostic of the meat sector of Serrana goat kid. The data is based on a sample of 70 breeders, members of the Association for the Serrana goats (ANCRAS), from the Northern region of Trás-os-Montes. The study findings reveal some structural weaknesses in the sector, such as low schooling of farmers, old age, cessation of goat farming activity, low producer prices or demand fluctuations. Indeed, according to our sample goat breeders, if we add the “goat breeders aging” with “herd goat decrease” and “abandonment of the goat farming activity”, the sector’s fragility is huge. Moreover, there are some lack of vision and innovation, by the actors in different links of the marketing chain. No one of the farmers sells the meat over the internet, retail or prepacked, so do not appropriate themselves of the added value of processing. Indeed, the product marketing is essentially based on meat quality, which has been presented as the sector main strength. Quantitative evaluation of the effects of positional versus orientational disorder on the scattering of acoustic phonons in disordered matter

    No full text
The phonon scattering processes in the three solid phases of ethanol are investigated using thermal conductivity, light, and neutron-scattering measurements as well as molecular dynamics simulations on single- crystalline models for two crystalline modifications (fully ordered monoclinic and orientationally disordered bcc phases). The orientationally disordered crystal is found to exhibit a temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity that is remarkably close to that of a structurally disordered solid, especially at low temperatures. This results, together with measurements of Brillouin linewidths as derived from light scattering measurements, emphasize the role of orientational disorder in phonon scattering. The experimental results obtained on polycrystal samples are then discussed with the aid of computer simulations on single-crystalline models of both bcc and monoclinic crystals. Our findings are in good agreement with the wealth of thermodynamic and dynamic data available so far, but at variance with the inferences drawn from inelastic x-ray data on polycrystalline samples, where a common nature for the excitations in all phases is postulated

The Quaternary Active Faults Database of Iberia (QAFI v.2.0)

The Quaternary Active Faults Database of Iberia (QAFI) is an initiative lead by the Institute of Geology and Mines of Spain (IGME) for building a public repository of scientific data regarding faults having documented activity during the last 2.59 Ma (Quaternary). QAFI also addresses a need to transfer geologic knowledge to practitioners of seismic hazard and risk in Iberia by identifying and characterizing seismogenic fault-sources. QAFI is populated by the information freely provided by more than 40 Earth science researchers, storing to date a total of 262 records. In this article we describe the development and evolution of the database, as well as its internal architecture. Aditionally, a first global analysis of the data is provided with a special focus on length and slip-rate fault parameters. Finally, the database completeness and the internal consistency of the data are discussed. Even though QAFI v.2.0 is the most current resource for calculating fault-related seismic hazard in Iberia, the database is still incomplete and requires further review

The ALHAMBRA survey: evolution of galaxy clustering since z ~ 1

We study the clustering of galaxies as function of luminosity and redshift in the range 0.35 < z < 1.25 using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium-Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The ALHAMBRA data used in this work cover 2.38 deg2 in seven independent fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts, σz ≲ 0.014(1 + z), down to IAB < 24. Given the depth of the survey, we select samples in B-band luminosity down to Lth ≃ 0.16L* at z = 0.9. We measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function, accounting for photometric redshifts uncertainties. We infer the galaxy bias, and study its evolution with luminosity. We study the effect of sample variance, and confirm earlier results that the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) and European Large Area ISO Survey North 1 (ELAIS-N1) fields are dominated by the presence of large structures. For the intermediate and bright samples, Lmed ≳ 0.6L*, we obtain a strong dependence of bias on luminosity, in agreement with previous results at similar redshift. We are able to extend this study to fainter luminosities, where we obtain an almost flat relation, similar to that observed at low redshift. Regarding the evolution of bias with redshift, our results suggest that the different galaxy populations studied reside in haloes covering a range in mass between log10[Mh/( h−1 M⊙)] ≳ 11.5 for samples with Lmed ≃ 0.3L* and log10[Mh/( h−1 M⊙)] ≳ 13.0 for samples with Lmed ≃ 2L*, with typical occupation numbers in the range of ∼1–3 galaxies per halo
