Contribution of vascular endothelial growth factor to the Nottingham prognostic index in node-negative breast cancer

    Get PDF
The prognostic contribution of intratumour VEGF, the most important factor in tumour-induced angiogenesis, to NPI was evaluated by using flexible modelling in a series of 226 N-primary breast cancer patients in which steroid receptors and cell proliferation were also accounted for. VEGF provided an additional prognostic contribution to NPI mainly within ER-poor tumours. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaignhttp://www.bjcancer.co

Harmonized dataset of surface fuels under Alpine, temperate and Mediterranean conditions in Italy. A synthesis supporting fire management

    Get PDF
Surface biomass characterization plays a key role in wildfire management. It allows classifying vegetation fuels flammability for fire risk analysis, to define silvicultural prescriptions for fire hazard reduction, to plan prescribed burning, or to model fire behavior and its effects, such as greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions. To facilitate fuel classification and analysis of potential fire behavior and effects in Italy, we harmonized 634 measurements of surface wildland fuels from Alpine, temperate and Mediterranean environments. The dataset provides quantitative data for duff, fine dead fuels and downed woody material, live grasses and shrubs fuel components. Surface fuel data were harmonized by subdividing loads (Mg ha(-1)) to standard size classes for dead (0-6, 6-25 and 25-75 mm) and live (0-6, 6-25 mm) fuels, collecting percent cover and depth/height (cm) of the various fuel components, and classifying observations into 19 fuelbed categories. To ensure comparability with existing vegetation classification systems, we classified each observation according to the European Fuel Map, the Corine Land Cover classes (level IV), the European Forest Types, and the forest categories of the Italian National Forest Inventory. The dataset and a photo description of each fuelbed category are available as Supplementary material. This dataset is the first step to develop several products at the national scale such as: (i) fuel type classification and mapping; (ii) carbon stock and wildfire emission estimates; (iii) calibration of fuel models for the simulation of fire behavior and effects

Vascular endothelial growth factor in node-positive breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant tamoxifen

    Get PDF
In 212 postmenopausal women with node-positive oestrogen receptor-positive (ER(LBA)) breast cancer subjected to radical surgery and adjuvant tamoxifen, the risk of 6-year relapse increased with increasing values of intratumoral vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients whose tumours had a low/intermediate ER(LBA) content compared to patients with high-ER(LBA) tumours. These findings indicate that tumour progression, activated or sustained by high VEGF levels, may be counteracted in high-ER(LBA) cancers by tamoxifen, which in contrast fails to contrast the metastatic potential in low-ER(LBA) tumours

Material deprivation affects the management and clinical outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma in a high-resource environment

none94Aim: This study investigated how material deprivation in Italy influences the stage of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at diagnosis and the chance of cure. Methods: 4114 patients from the Italian Liver Cancer database consecutively diagnosed with HCC between January 2008 and December 2018 were analysed about severe material deprivation (SMD) rate tertiles of the region of birth and region of managing hospitals, according to the European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions. The main outcomes were HCC diagnosis modalities (during or outside surveillance), treatment adoption and overall survival. Results: In more deprived regions, HCC was more frequently diagnosed during surveillance, while the incidental diagnosis was prevalent in the least deprived. Tumour characteristics did not differ among regions. The proportion of patients undergoing potentially curative treatments progressively decreased as the SMD worsened. Consequently, overall survival was better in less deprived regions. Patients who moved from most deprived to less deprived regions increased their probability of receiving potentially curative treatments by 1.11 times (95% CI 1.03 to 1.19), decreasing their mortality likelihood (hazard ratio 0.78 95% CI 0.67 to 0.90). Conclusions: Socioeconomic status measured through SMD does not seem to influence HCC features at diagnosis but brings a negative effect on the chance of receiving potentially curative treatments. Patient mobility from the most deprived to the less deprived regions increased the access to curative therapies, with the ultimate result of improving survival.openCucchetti A.; Gramenzi A.; Johnson P.; Giannini E.G.; Tovoli F.; Rapaccini G.L.; Marra F.; Cabibbo G.; Caturelli E.; Gasbarrini A.; Svegliati-Baroni G.; Sacco R.; Zoli M.; Morisco F.; Di Marco M.; Mega A.; Foschi F.G.; Biasini E.; Masotto A.; Nardone G.; Raimondo G.; Azzaroli F.; Vidili G.; Brunetto M.R.; Farinati F.; Trevisani F.; Avanzato F.; Biselli M.; Caraceni P.; Garuti F.; Neri A.; Santi V.; Pellizzaro F.; Imondi A.; Sartori A.; Penzo B.; Sanmarco A.; Granito A.; Muratori L.; Piscaglia F.; Sansone V.; Forgione A.; Dajti E.; Marasco G.; Ravaioli F.; Cappelli A.; Golfieri R.; Mosconi C.; Renzulli M.; Cela E.M.; Facciorusso A.; Cacciato V.; Casagrande E.; Moscatelli A.; Pellegatta G.; de Matthaeis N.; Allegrini G.; Lauria V.; Ghittoni G.; Pelecca G.; Chegai F.; Coratella F.; Ortenzi M.; Missale G.; Olivani A.; Inno A.; Marchetti F.; Busacca A.; Camma C.; Di Martino V.; Maria Rizzo G.E.; Franze M.S.; Saitta C.; Sauchella A.; Berardinelli D.; Bevilacqua V.; Borghi A.; Gardini A.C.; Conti F.; Dall'Aglio A.C.; Ercolani G.; Adotti V.; Arena U.; Di Bonaventura C.; Campani C.; Dragoni G.; Gitto S.; Laffi G.; Coccoli P.; Malerba A.; Guarino M.; Capasso M.; Oliveri F.; Romagnoli V.Cucchetti, A.; Gramenzi, A.; Johnson, P.; Giannini, E. Infiltrating ductal and lobular breast carcinomas are characterised by different interrelationships among markers related to angiogenesis and hormone dependence

    Get PDF
To obtain a more integrated understanding of the different breast cancer phenotypes and to investigate whether bio-molecular profiles can distinguish between specific histotypes, we explored the interrelations among several biologic variables indicative of, or related to, hormone dependence, proliferation and apoptosis control, and angiogenesis in ductal and lobular carcinomas, the most common histotypes. Oestrogen and progesterone receptors, tumour proliferative activity, the expression of cyclin A, p16ink4A, p27kip1, p21waf1, p53, bcl-2, and levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) were evaluated in 190 in ductal and 67 lobular carcinomas. Our findings support the hypothesis that in ductal and lobular carcinomas are two distinct, partially phenotypically unrelated entities, the latter being characterised by the presence of features indicative of differentiation such as oestrogen receptors, low proliferation and lack of p53 expression and associated with low vascular endothelial growth factor content compared to angiogenesis in ductal carcinomas. Conversely, no significant difference was found between lobular carcinomas and in ductal carcinomas considering the frequency distribution of PgR-positive cases, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors acting at the G1/S boundary, bcl-2 and HIF-1α protein expression. Although both generally defined as hormone responsive, in ductal and lobular carcinomas are also characterised by biologic patterns in which proteins related to hormone responsiveness, cell-cycle control, apoptosis and angiogenesis were differently associated. This finding suggests the need to refine breast cancer characterisation in order to provide detailed information about individual tumours, or subsets of tumours, that will help in defining optimal treatment approaches

Globe-LFMC, a global plant water status database for vegetation ecophysiology and wildfire applications

    Get PDF
Globe-LFMC is an extensive global database of live fuel moisture content (LFMC) measured from 1,383 sampling sites in 11 countries: Argentina, Australia, China, France, Italy, Senegal, Spain, South Africa, Tunisia, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The database contains 161,717 individual records based on in situ destructive samples used to measure LFMC, representing the amount of water in plant leaves per unit of dry matter. The primary goal of the database is to calibrate and validate remote sensing algorithms used to predict LFMC. However, this database is also relevant for the calibration and validation of dynamic global vegetation models, eco-physiological models of plant water stress as well as understanding the physiological drivers of spatiotemporal variation in LFMC at local, regional and global scales. Globe-LFMC should be useful for studying LFMC trends in response to environmental change and LFMC influence on wildfire occurrence, wildfire behavior, and overall vegetation health
