This article discusses some issues relating to the evolution suffered by education, from the unidirectional communicational model to the definition of a new educational paradigm. This emergent paradigm, in the beginning of the XXI century, is suited to the so called information society and relates to forthcoming learning environments. For a full characterization of the paradigms approached in this article, we refer to the curricular theories which help to understand the complex practices that are the basics of organizational models underlying these paradigms.

Value creation through trust in technological-mediated social participation

    Get PDF
In this article, we advocate for the use of a social-technical model of trust to support interaction designers in further reflecting on trust-enabling interaction design values that foster participation. Our rationale is built upon the believe that technological-mediated social participation needs trust, and it is with trust-enabling interactions that we foster the will for collaborate and share—the two key elements of participation. This article starts by briefly presenting a social-technical model of trust and then moves on with establishing authors rational that interconnects trust with technological-mediated social participation. It continues by linking the trust value to the context of design critique and critical design, and ends by illustrating how to incorporate the trust value into design. This is achieved by proposing an analytical tool that can serve to inform interaction designers to better understand the potential design options and reasons for choosing them

Ripples: a tool for supervision and control of remote assets

    Get PDF
We describe the Ripples cloud-based software for coordination and control of multiple remote assets. Ripples can ingest and disseminate data coming from multiple sources such as physical models, drifting sensors, marine traffic (AIS) and unmanned vehicles deployed in remote areas. On top of data dissemination and awareness, Ripples can also be used for planning the autonomous assets using satellite communications, maintaining the operators in the loop.Peer Reviewe

    Get PDF
This paper proposes an extended set of SVF commands, which were designed to support real-time monitoring of forbidden patterns at selected groups of boundary-scan pins. The complete SVF program is written and run using an integrated low-cost test controller with its own IP address, enabling remote control of the target hardware. An application example is presented, using a simple dual-port boundary-scan board

Studying the Pacific Subtropical Front with multiple assets

We describe a novel approach to physical oceanography by coordinating remote sensing, multiple autonomous vehicles and ship borne sensors. In contrast with conventional oceanography where ships are the single point of sampling in the middle of a big ocean or are used simply as the base of operations from where autonomous vehicles are deployed, we propose a new approach where ship and autonomous vehicles are coordinated together via satellite communications. We conclude with results and lessons learned from a real-world deployment of the R/V Falkor oceanographic ship together with multiple autonomous vehicles to study the Pacific's Subtropical Front, 800 miles off the coast of San Diego

The influence of wine storytelling on the global wine tourism experience

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the role of wine storytelling as an antecedent in the wine tourism experience, namely on other constructs such as winescape attributes, sensorial attraction, wine excitement and cultural experience. Th is study analyses the combined use of fi ve wine tourism experience dimensions as well the infl uence of storytelling as a key antecedent of the wine experience. Th is study extends existing knowledge by identifying new key drivers which focus on wine tourist behavioural responses within visits to the wine cellars. Data were collected within two wine tourism settings in Madeira and Porto wine cellars, from two convenience samples of 647 international wine tourists. Using partial least square structural equation modelling, the results reveal a direct impact of wine storytelling on the several dimensions of the wine tourism experiences. Furthermore, storytelling was found to directly infl uence wine excitement, and indirectly both outcome variables (wine excitement and cultural experience), trough the mediating eff ect of winescape attributes and sensorial attraction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This is an open access article under the CC-BY-NC-ND license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).Introduction and Objective: Every year cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 3.9 million deaths in Europe. Portugal has implemented a set of public health policies to tackle CVD mortality: a smoking ban in 2008, a salt reduction regulation in 2010 and the coronary fast-track system (FTS) for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in 2007. Our goal in this study was to analyze the impact of these three public health policies in reducing case-fatality rates from ACS between 2000 and 2016. Methods: The impact of these policies on monthly ACS case-fatalities was assessed by creating individual models for each of the initiatives and implementing multiple linear regression analysis, using standard methods for interrupted time series. We also implemented segmented regression analysis to test which year showed a significant difference in the case-fatality slopes. Results: Separate modeling showed that the smoking ban (beta=-0.861, p=0.050) and the FTS (beta=-1.27, p=0.003) had an immediate impact after implementation, but did not have a significant impact on ACS trends. The salt reduction regulation did not have a significant impact. For the segmented model, we found significant differences between case-fatality trends before and after 2009, with rates before 2009 showing a steeper decrease. Conclusions: The smoking ban and the FTS led to an immediate decrease in case-fatality rates; however, after 2009 no major decrease in case-fatality trends was found. Coronary heart disease constitutes an immense public health problem and it remains essential for decision-makers, public health authorities and the cardiology community to keep working to reduce ACS mortality rates.

    A framework for cooperative engineering

    Get PDF
This paper discusses a framework for Cooperative Engineering (CE) and itsprototype implementation. Cooperative Engineering concerns the application ofConcurrent Engineering techniques to the design and development of products and oftheir manufacturing systems by a network of companies coming together exclusively forthat purpose. CE is a common practice in many industries such as automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, defence, and pharmaceutical. This framework provides a formal model forCE. This is done in the context of distributed hybrid systems (DHS), a modelling andcontrol framework for networked systems introduced recently by the control andcomputer science communities

Abstract: The aim of this research is to analyze and relate the leadership behaviors and communication styles required of Infantry junior officers in their daily command tasks, in order to influence their subordinates to achieve extraordinary effort, group effectiveness and satisfaction. For this study, was used quantitative method and a survey was implemented comprising three questionnaires: one on leadership competences, one on communication styles, and one on with three criterion factors (extraordinary effort, group effectiveness and satisfaction). The survey was administered to a sample of 804 soldiers (30 Junior Officers, 81 Sergeants and 693 privates and corporals). The analysis of the data revealed that subordinates perceive that their commanders (junior officers) practice task oriented leadership behaviors, particularly on “orientation to the mission” and “decision making”. The behaviors exhibited by the officers strongly and positively relate with the “assertive” communication style. Moreover, all leadership behaviors practiced by the officers are strongly associated to the criterion factors, with the exception of the leadership dimension “vision”, which presents weaker correlations. The leadership dimensions that junior officers can conduct to promote satisfaction is “conflict management” and “participative leadership”.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
