Interactions affecting gibberellic acid production in solid-state culture: A factorial study

    Get PDF
7 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablasThe production of GA3 in solid-state culture was studied using systems composed of maize cob particles soaked in an amylaceous efluent, as a function of three variables-particle diameter, volume of liquid phase, and substrate concentration-with a determinant influence on the response. The empirical model obtained provides an explanation of the behavior of the system in terms of a series of interactions with underlying problems of water activity and mass transfer, that can, however, be manipulated in a simple and reproducible manner. This model also allows the suitable orientation of production improvement, the interpretation of the mechanism of substrate inhibition detected, as well as means of correcting it without reducing the initial concentration of the substrate, and leads to an 11 -fold increase in the production obtained in the preliminary assays. The authors thank CICYT and Xunta de Galicia for their financial support (projects ALI 789-90, AMB 93-O 136, and XUGA-40204B-92).Peer reviewe

Amylase production by solid state culture of Aspergillus oryzae on polyurethane foams. Some mechanistic approaches from an empirical model

8 páginas, 6 figuras, 4 tablasUsing systems formed by particles of polyurethane foam of different densities soaked in an amylaceous effluent, the production of amylases by Aspergillus oryzae in solid state culture was studied by a complete factorial plan with four variables -- support density, particle diameter, volume of liquid phase and substrate concentration. The empirical model obtained is consistent and allows a simple control of the response, superior in several respects to that of the corresponding submerged cultures. Moreover, it enables a mechanistic approach to the behaviour of the system, whose principal kinetic characteristics can be interpreted in terms of intra- and interparticular diffusional effects, which have a determining influence on basic state variables, such as water activity and gas transfer. The authors would like to thank CICYT and Xunta de Galicia for their financial support (projects AMB 93-0136 and XUGA-40204B-92).Peer reviewe

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge on biological risk and the attitudes of nursing personnel in the application of biosafety standards. Methodology: Descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study in 131 nursing professionals and auxiliaries, in which knowledge and attitudes regarding the issue of biological risk, protection measures and good practices were evaluated. Descriptive statistics and a bivariate analysis were used using both Chi2 and Fisher's Exact Test, considering alpha 0.05. Results: 85% of the sample were nursing assistants and 89% women. More than 80% have intermediate to low levels of knowledge. In more than 60%, the attitude towards the application of biosafety standards was unfavorable or indifferent. A statistically significant relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes was evident (P <0.05). Conclusions: There is evidence of the need to improve the knowledge and attitudes of nursing personnel on the issue of biological risk, so that they can recognize it and mitigate its consequences.

9 páginas, 12 figuras, 4 tablasThe treatment of starchy effluents could provide the basis for a series of simultaneous or alternative bioproductions easily integrable into a system of greater economic attraction that the simple production of SCP. In order to define some of the possible options, this study uses an amylaceous effluent for simultaneous production of SCP and an amylolytic preparation which is partially consumed in the saccharification of a parallel flow of the same effluent concentrated by ultrafiltration with cutoff at 100 kD. With regard to the development of the above system, this paper describes the problems associated with ultrafiltration, the conditions that optimize saccharification of the concentrate and the requirements of various possible bioproductions that couM be obtained from the saccharified concentrate.CICYT (project ALl 789- 9O).Peer reviewe

To assess the quality of adolescent friendly health services. METHODS: Qualitative assessment using the simulated user technique in first level clinics of Health Services of Morelos, Mexico, during 2018. Ten out of 17 facilities with non-exclusive adolescent friendly services were randomly selected. An additional facility with exclusive adolescent friendly services was included as an intensive subsample. Four adolescents served as simulated users interpreting different cases in the clinics. The total of 43 semi-structured exit interviews were conducted, and two nominal groups were made to assess the perceived quality from the adolescents’ perception of friendliness and experience. Thematic analysis of the data obtained was performed. RESULTS: Staff attitude was highlighted as a key element in the adolescents’ experience. Failures were found, such as the existence of bureaucratic barriers to access, lack of signage in clinics, lack of privacy and confidentiality, failure of physical examination during the appointment and lack of monitoring of the reasons for appointment. The exclusive clinic for adolescents offered more appropriate friendly services compared with nonexclusive clinics. CONCLUSION: Although the service is accessible in most of the clinics visited, it is still far from being friendly according to international recommendations. The exclusive clinic for adolescents stood out for having better structured mechanisms that can be implemented in nonexclusive clinics to improve the care process

Background: Emergency departments (ED) serve as a contact point for critically ill patients. According toexperience, a fraction of patients visiting ED present with symptoms and require palliative care; however, the prevalence of these patients has not been determined in Peru so far. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of advanced disease in patients admitted to ED and identify amongthem the need for palliative care.Patients and methods: In the ED of 3 tertiary hospitals in Lima all adult patients had an evaluation ofthe medical history and an interview with patients or caregivers. The presence of multiple metastases wasconsidered advanced cancer, and dementia, neurological, respiratory, hepatic or cardiac disease with functionaldependence or severe deterioration for non-oncological illness. The screening tool was a validatedand adapted palliative care questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of advanced illness was 7.5% (60 of 797 admissions). The age of patients was19–96 (median 73.1) years of which 48.3% were females, 23 (39%) patients had oncological and 37 (61%)patients non-oncological diagnoses. The most frequent symptoms upon admission were dyspnoea, drowsiness, and pain. A total of 13 (21.7%) of patients with advanced disease were already receiving palliativecare and 8 (13.3%) had controlled symptoms. Conclusions: Nearly 1 in 13 patients attending ED of tertiary hospitals has advanced disease, of which80% reported the need for palliative care with less than a quarter of them having received it
