    Transporte de explosivos químicos sometidos a procesos de infiltración y evaporación en suelos

    Es necesario conocer el destino y el transporte de Compuestos Explosivos Relacionados ( para evaluar la contaminación potencial y para proteger los suministros de agua potable de contaminantes tóxicos, desarrollar estrategias de remediación, y facilitar la detección de explosivos enterrados. En este estudio se desarrollaron seis experimentos para evaluar los efectos de la infiltración y evaporación en el transporte de químicos explosivos. Estos experimentos se realizaron en una columna cilíndrica de 100 cm de longitud empacada con arena homogénea, instrumentada con sensores de presión de aire y agua y puntos de muestreo para monitorear las condiciones hidráulicas y perfiles de concentración de ERCs en el suelo. Esta investigación estudió el comportamiento del transporte de ERCs en el suelo bajo diferentes condiciones ambientales, cuando se sometieron a la advección (movimiento de fluidos). Los resultados mostraron que el transporte de TNT (2,4,6 trinitrotolueno) y DNT (2,4 dinitrotolueno) está influenciado por la disolución (fuente-agua), la volatilización (agua-aire), y las limitaciones en la transferencia de masa por adsorción (agua-suelo). El movimiento hacia abajo con el agua infiltrada por lo general es retardado por procesos de adsorción en los suelos y superficies de contacto aire-agua. El movimiento ascendente del agua durante la evaporación resultó en el movimiento ascendente de ERCs hacia la superficie sueloatmósfera. La evaporación del agua cerca de la superficie del suelo produjo un aumento de la concentración de ERC cerca de la superficie del suelo después de períodos prolongados de evaporación

    Effects of excitotoxic lesion with inhaled anesthetics on nervous system cells of rodents

    Different anesthesia methods can variably influence excitotoxic lesion effects on the brain. The main purpose of this review is to identify potential differences in the toxicity to nervous system cells of two common inhalation anesthesia methods, isoflurane and sevoflurane, used in combination with an excitotoxic lesion procedure in rodents. The use of bioassays in animal models has provided the opportunity to examine the role of specific molecules and cellular interactions that underlie important aspects of neurotoxic effects relating to calcium homeostasis and apoptosis activation. Processes induced by NMDA antagonist drugs involve translocation of Bax protein to mitochondrial membranes, allowing extra-mitochondrial leakage of cytochrome c, followed by sequence of changes that ending in activation of CASP-3. The literature demonstrates that the use of these anesthetics in excitotoxic surgery increases neuroinflammation activity facilitating the effects of apoptosis and necrosis on nervous system cells, depending on the concentration and exposure duration of the anesthetic. High numbers of microglia and astrocytes and high levels of proinflammatory cytokines and caspase activation possibly mediate these inflammatory responses. However, it is necessary to continue studies in rodents to understand the effect of the use of inhaled anesthetics with excitotoxic lesions in different developmental stages, including newborns, juveniles and adults. Understanding the mechanisms of regulation of cell death during development can potentially provide tools to promote neuroprotection and eventually achieve the repair of the nervous system in pathological conditions

    Sub-second infrared variability from the archetypal accreting neutron star 4U 1728−34

    We report on the first simultaneous high-time resolution X-ray and infrared (IR) observations of a neutron star low mass X-ray binary in its hard state. We performed ≈ 2 h of simultaneous observations of 4U 1728−34 using HAWK-I@VLT, XMM– Newton, and NuSTAR. The source displayed significant X-ray and IR variability down to sub-second time-scales. By measuring the cross-correlation function between the IR and X-ray lightcurves, we discovered a significant correlation with an IR lead of ≈ 30–40 ms with respect to the X-rays. We analysed the X-ray energy dependence of the lag, finding a marginal increase towards higher energies. Given the sign of the lag, we interpret this as possible evidence of Comptonization from external seed photons. We discuss the origin of the IR seed photons in terms of cyclo-synchrotron radiation from an extended hot flow. Finally, we also observed the IR counterpart of a type-I X-ray burst, with a delay of ≈ 7.2 s. Although some additional effects may be at play, by assuming that this lag is due to light travel time between the central object and the companion star, we find that 4U 1728−34 must have an orbital period longer than 3 h and an inclination higher than 8◦

    The intrinsic shape of galaxy bulges

    The knowledge of the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) structure of galaxy components provides crucial information about the physical processes driving their formation and evolution. In this paper I discuss the main developments and results in the quest to better understand the 3D shape of galaxy bulges. I start by establishing the basic geometrical description of the problem. Our understanding of the intrinsic shape of elliptical galaxies and galaxy discs is then presented in a historical context, in order to place the role that the 3D structure of bulges play in the broader picture of galaxy evolution.     Measurement of Leptonic Asymmetries and Top Quark Polarization in ttbar Production

    We present measurements of lepton (l) angular distributions in ttbar -> W+ b W- b -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar decays produced in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=1.96TeV, where l is an electron or muon. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb^-1, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Collider, we find that the angular distributions of l- relative to anti-protons and l+ relative to protons are in agreement with each other. Combining the two distributions and correcting for detector acceptance we obtain the forward-backward asymmetry A^l_FB = (5.8 +- 5.1(stat) +- 1.3(syst))%, compared to the standard model prediction of A^l_FB (predicted) = (4.7 +- 0.1)%. This result is further combined with the measurement based on the analysis of the l+jets final state to obtain A^l_FB = (11.8 +- 3.2)%.     Measurement of the semileptonic charge asymmetry in B0 meson mixing with the D0 detector

    We present a measurement of the semileptonic mixing asymmetry for B0 mesons, a^d_{sl}, using two independent decay channels: B0 -> mu+D-X, with D- -> K+pi-pi-; and B0 -> mu+D*-X, with D*- -> antiD0 pi-, antiD0 -> K+pi- (and charge conjugate processes). We use a data sample corresponding to 10.4 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We extract the charge asymmetries in these two channels as a function of the visible proper decay length (VPDL) of the B0 meson, correct for detector-related asymmetries using data-driven methods, and account for dilution from charge-symmetric processes using Monte Carlo simulation. The final measurement combines four signal VPDL regions for each channel, yielding a^d_{sl} = [0.68 \pm 0.45 \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.14 \text{(syst.)}]%. This is the single most precise measurement of this parameter, with uncertainties smaller than the current world average of B factory measurements.Comment: Version includes minor textual changes following peer review by journal, most notably the updating of Ref.     We have searched for the charmless hadronic decay of B0 mesons into two neutral pions. Using 9.13fb^-1 taken at the Upsilon(4S) with the CLEO detector, we obtain an improved upper limit for the branching fraction BR(B0-->pi0pi0) < 5.7*10^-6 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Search for the Higgs boson in lepton, tau and jets final states

    We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson in final states with an electron or muon and a hadronically decaying tau lepton in association with two or more jets using 9.7 fb^{-1} of Run II Fermilab Tevatron Collider data collected with the D0 detector. The analysis is sensitive to Higgs boson production via gluon fusion, associated vector boson production, and vector boson fusion, followed by the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs or to W boson pairs. The ratios of 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio to those predicted by the standard model are obtained for orthogonal subsamples that are enriched in either H -> tau tau decays or H -> WW decays, and for the combination of these subsample limits. The observed and expected limit ratios for the combined subsamples at a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV are 11.3 and 9.0 respectively

    Search for Zgamma events with large missing transverse energy in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

    We present the first search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in Zgamma final states with large missing transverse energy using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.2 fb-1 collected with the D0 experiment in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. This signature is predicted in gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models, where the lightest neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and is produced in pairs, possibly through decay from heavier supersymmetric particles. The NLSP can decay either to a Z boson or a photon and an associated gravitino that escapes detection. We exclude this model at the 95% C.L. for SUSY breaking scales of Lambda < 87 TeV, corresponding to neutralino masses of < 151 GeV.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
