In Situ Detection of HY-Specific T Cells in Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease–Affected Male Skin after Sex-Mismatched Stem Cell Transplantation
HY-specific T cells are presumed to play a role in acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) after female-to-male stem cell transplantation (SCT). However, infiltrates of these T cells in aGVHD-affected tissues have not yet been reported. We evaluated the application of HLA-A2/HY dextramers for the in situ detection of HY-specific T cells in cryopreserved skin biopsy specimens. We applied the HLA-A2/HY dextramers on cryopreserved skin biopsy specimens from seven male HLA-A2+ pediatric patients who underwent stem cell transplantation with confirmed aGVHD involving the skin. The dextramers demonstrated the presence of HY-specific T cells. In skin biopsy specimens of three male recipients of female grafts, 68% to 78% of all skin-infiltrating CD8+ T cells were HY-specific, whereas these cells were absent in biopsy specimens collected from sex-matched patient–donor pairs. Although this study involved a small and heterogeneous patient group, our results strongly support the hypothesis that HY-specific T cells are actively involved in the pathophysiology of aGVHD after sex-mismatched stem cell transplantation
Two-proton correlations from 158 AGeV Pb+Pb central collisions
The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central
collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results
are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source
distributions and transport models RQMD and VENUS. An effective proton source
size is determined by minimizing CHI-square/ndf between the correlation
functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding
3.85 +-0.15(stat.) +0.60-0.25(syst.) fm. Both the RQMD and the VENUS model are
consistent with the data within the error in the correlation peak region.Comment: RevTeX style, 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. More discussion are added
about the structure on the tail of the correlation function. The systematic
error is revised. To appear in Phys. Lett.
Event-by-event fluctuations of average transverse momentum in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present first data on event-by-event fluctuations in the average
transverse momentum of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at the
CERN SPS. This measurement provides previously unavailable information allowing
sensitive tests of microscopic and thermodynamic collision models and to search
for fluctuations expected to occur in the vicinity of the predicted QCD phase
transition. We find that the observed variance of the event-by-event average
transverse momentum is consistent with independent particle production modified
by the known two-particle correlations due to quantum statistics and final
state interactions and folded with the resolution of the NA49 apparatus. For
two specific models of non-statistical fluctuations in transverse momentum
limits are derived in terms of fluctuation amplitude. We show that a
significant part of the parameter space for a model of isospin fluctuations
predicted as a consequence of chiral symmetry restoration in a non-equilibrium
scenario is excluded by our measurement.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W'
decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider at a
center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity
of about 1 inverse femtobarn. Lacking any significant excess in the data in
comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on the production cross
section times branching fraction, and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can
be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to
fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits, and is the
most stringent to date.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet production cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV.
The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/G* -> e+e- candidates corresponding
to the integrated luminosity of 0.4 fb-1 collected using the D0 detector.
Ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross
section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are
found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and
with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and
hadronization.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, slightly modified, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Xi and Xi-bar Production in 158 GeV/Nucleon Pb+Pb Collisions
We report measurements of Xi and Xi-bar hyperon absolute yields as a function
of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/-
0.12 for Xi, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Xi-bar, leading to the ratio of Xi-bar/Xi =
0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass
spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total
yield of Xi particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per
collision. Comparison to Xi production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the
same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi
production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions.Comment: 15 page
Search for Supersymmetry in Di-Photon Final States at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV
We report results of a search for supersymmetry (SUSY) with gauge-mediated
symmetry breaking in di-photon events collected by the D0 experiment at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002--2006. In 1.1 fb of data, we find no
significant excess beyond the background expected from the standard model and
set the most stringent lower limits to date for a standard benchmark model on
the lightest neutralino and chargino masses of 125 GeV and 229 GeV,
respectively, at 95% confidence
Measurement of the ratio of the +-jet cross section to the inclusive +jets cross section
We present a measurement of the fraction of inclusive +jets events
produced with net charm quantum number , denoted +-jet, in
collisions at TeV using approximately 1~fb of
data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
identify the +jets events via the leptonic boson decays. Candidate
+-jet events are selected by requiring a jet containing a muon in
association with a reconstructed boson and exploiting the charge
correlation between this muon and boson decay lepton to perform a nearly
model-independent background subtraction. We measure the fraction of
+-jet events in the inclusive +jets sample for jet GeV and
pseudorapidity to be
0.074(stat.)(syst.), in agreement with
theoretical predictions. The probability that background fluctuations could
produce the observed fraction of +-jet events is estimated to be
, which corresponds to a 3.5 statistical
significance.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters
Search for scalar top quarks in the acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy final state in collisions at TeV
We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks,
, using 995 pb of data collected in collisions
with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at
TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a
neutralino (), where is the
lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two
acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. We find the yield of such
events to be consistent with the standard model expectation, and exclude sets
of and masses at the 95% C.L. that
substantially extend the domain excluded by previous searches.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Physics Letters
Search for squarks and gluinos in events with jets and missing transverse energy using 2.1 fb-1 of ppbar collision data at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb-1 collected
by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider was analyzed to search for
squarks and gluinos produced in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of
1.96 TeV. No evidence for the production of such particles was observed in
topologies involving jets and missing transverse energy, and 95% C.L. lower
limits of 379 GeV and 308 GeV were set on the squark and gluino masses,
respectively, within the framework of minimal supergravity with tan(beta)=3,
A0=0, and mu<0. The corresponding previous limits are improved by 54 GeV and 67
GeV
