About the initial mass function and HeII emission in young starbursts
We demonstrate that it is crucial to account for the evolution of the
starburst population in order to derive reliable numbers of O stars from
integrated spectra for burst ages t > 2 - 3 Myr. In these cases the method of
Vacca & Conti (1992) and Vacca (1994) systematically underestimates the number
of O stars. Therefore the current WR/O number ratios in Wolf-Rayet (WR)
galaxies are overestimated. This questions recent claims about flat IMF slopes
(alpha ~ 1-2) in these objects. If the evolution of the burst is properly
treated we find that the observations are indeed compatible with a Salpeter
IMF, in agreement with earlier studies.
Including recent predictions from non-LTE, line blanketed model atmospheres
which account for stellar winds, we synthesize the nebular and WR HeII 4686
emission in young starbursts. For metallicities 1/5 <= Z/Z_sun <= 1 we predict
a strong nebular HeII emission due to a significant fraction of WC stars in
early WR phases of the burst. For other metallicities broad WR emission will
always dominate the HeII emission. Our predictions of the nebular HeII
intensity agree well with the observations in WR galaxies and an important
fraction of the giant HII regions where nebular HeII is detected. We propose

Clinical Use and Effectiveness of Lipid Lowering Therapies in Diabetes Mellitus—An Observational Study from the Swedish National Diabetes Register
OBJECTIVES: To describe the use and evaluate the effectiveness of different lipid lowering therapies in unselected patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in clinical practice. DESIGN: Observational population-based study using the personal identification number to link information from the National Diabetes Register, the Prescribed Drug Register and the Patient register in Sweden. All patients in the NDR aged 18-75 years with diabetes more than one year were eligible, but only patients starting any lipid lowering treatment with at least three prescriptions 1 July 2006-30 June 2007 were included (n = 37,182). The mean blood lipid levels in 2008 and reductions in LDL cholesterol were examined. RESULTS: Blood lipid levels were similar in patients treated with simvastatin, atorvastatin and rosuvastatin, showing similar lipid lowering effect as currently used. Users of pravastatin, fluvastatin, ezetimib and fibrate more seldom reach treatment goals. Moderate daily doses of the statins were used, with 76% of simvastatin users taking 20 mg or less, 48% of atorvastatin users taking 10 mg, 55% of pravastatin users taking 20 mg, and 76% of rosuvastatin users taking 5 or 10 mg. CONCLUSIONS: This observational study shows that the LDL-C levels in patients taking simvastatin, atorvastatin or rosuvastatin are very similar as currently used, as well as their LDL-C lowering abilities. There is potential to intensify lipid lowering treatment to reduce the remaining high residual risk and achieve better fulfilment of treatment goals, since the commonly used doses are only low to moderate
A multi-wavelength census of star formation activity in the young embedded cluster around Serpens/G3-G6
Aims. The aim of this paper is to characterise the star formation activity in
the poorly studied embedded cluster Serpens/G3-G6, located ~ 45' (3 pc) to the
south of the Serpens Cloud Core, and to determine the luminosity and mass
functions of its population of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs).
Methods. Multi-wavelength broadband photometry was obtained to sample the
near and mid-IR spectral energy distributions to separate YSOs from field stars
and classify the YSO evolutionary stage. ISOCAM mapping in the two filters LW2
(5-8.5 um) and LW3 (12-18 um) of a 19' x 16' field was combined with JHKs data
from 2MASS, Ks data from Arnica/NOT, and L' data from SIRCA/NOT. Continuum
emission at 1.3 mm (IRAM) and 3.6 cm (VLA) was mapped to study the cloud
structure and the coldest/youngest sources. Deep narrow band imaging at the
2.12 um S(1) line of H2 from NOTCam/NOT was obtained to search for signs of
bipolar outflows.
Results. We have strong evidence for a stellar population of 31 Class II
sources, 5 flat-spectrum sources, 5 Class I sources, and two Class 0 sources.
Our method does not sample the Class III sources. The cloud is composed of two
main dense clumps aligned along a ridge over ~ 0.5 pc plus a starless core
coinciding with absorption features seen in the ISOCAM maps. We find two
S-shaped bipolar collimated flows embedded in the NE clump, and propose the two
driving sources to be a Class 0 candidate (MMS3) and a double Class I (MMS2).
For the Class II population we find a best age of ~ 2 Myr and compatibility
with recent Initial Mass Functions (IMFs) by comparing the observed Class II
luminosity function (LF), which is complete to 0.08 L_sun, to various model LFs

Evidence of triggered star formation in G327.3-0.6. Dust-continuum mapping of an infrared dark cloud with P-ArT\'eMiS
Aims. Expanding HII regions and propagating shocks are common in the
environment of young high-mass star-forming complexes. They can compress a
pre-existing molecular cloud and trigger the formation of dense cores. We
investigate whether these phenomena can explain the formation of high-mass
protostars within an infrared dark cloud located at the position of G327.3-0.6
in the Galactic plane, in between two large infrared bubbles and two HII
regions. Methods: The region of G327.3-0.6 was imaged at 450 ? m with the CEA
P-ArT\'eMiS bolometer array on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope in
Chile. APEX/LABOCA and APEX-2A, and Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS archives data were
used in this study. Results: Ten massive cores were detected in the P-ArT\'eMiS
image, embedded within the infrared dark cloud seen in absorption at both 8 and
24 ?m. Their luminosities and masses indicate that they form high-mass stars.
The kinematical study of the region suggests that the infrared bubbles expand
toward the infrared dark cloud. Conclusions: Under the influence of expanding
bubbles, star formation occurs in the infrared dark areas at the border of HII
regions and infrared bubbles.Comment: 4 page
The Aquila prestellar core population revealed by Herschel
The origin and possible universality of the stellar initial mass function
(IMF) is a major issue in astrophysics. One of the main objectives of the
Herschel Gould Belt Survey is to clarify the link between the prestellar core
mass function (CMF) and the IMF. We present and discuss the core mass function
derived from Herschel data for the large population of prestellar cores
discovered with SPIRE and PACS in the Aquila Rift cloud complex at d ~ 260 pc.
We detect a total of 541 starless cores in the entire ~11 deg^2 area of the
field imaged at 70-500 micron with SPIRE/PACS. Most of these cores appear to be
gravitationally bound, and thus prestellar in nature. Our Herschel results
confirm that the shape of the prestellar CMF resembles the stellar IMF, with
much higher quality statistics than earlier submillimeter continuum
ground-based surveys
Herschel observations of embedded protostellar clusters in the Rosette Molecular Cloud
The Herschel OB young stellar objects survey (HOBYS) has observed the Rosette
molecular cloud, providing an unprecedented view of its star formation
activity. These new far-infrared data reveal a population of compact young
stellar objects whose physical properties we aim to characterise. We compiled a
sample of protostars and their spectral energy distributions that covers the
near-infrared to submillimetre wavelength range. These were used to constrain
key properties in the protostellar evolution, bolometric luminosity, and
envelope mass and to build an evolutionary diagram. Several clusters are
distinguished including the cloud centre, the embedded clusters in the vicinity
of luminous infrared sources, and the interaction region. The analysed
protostellar population in Rosette ranges from 0.1 to about 15 Msun with
luminosities between 1 and 150 Lsun, which extends the evolutionary diagram
from low-mass protostars into the high-mass regime. Some sources lack
counterparts at near- to mid-infrared wavelengths, indicating extreme youth.
The central cluster and the Phelps & Lada 7 cluster appear less evolved than
the remainder of the analysed protostellar population. For the central cluster,
we find indications that about 25% of the protostars classified as Class I from
near- to mid-infrared data are actually candidate Class 0 objects. As a
showcase for protostellar evolution, we analysed four protostars of low- to
intermediate-mass in a single dense core, and they represent different
evolutionary stages from Class 0 to Class I. Their mid- to far-infrared
spectral slopes flatten towards the Class I stage, and the 160 to 70um flux
ratio is greatest for the presumed Class 0 source. This shows that the Herschel
observations characterise the earliest stages of protostellar evolution in

The Mid-Infrared Instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope, III: MIRIM, The MIRI Imager
In this article, we describe the MIRI Imager module (MIRIM), which provides
broad-band imaging in the 5 - 27 microns wavelength range for the James Webb
Space Telescope. The imager has a 0"11 pixel scale and a total unobstructed
view of 74"x113". The remainder of its nominal 113"x113" field is occupied by
the coronagraphs and the low resolution spectrometer. We present the instrument
optical and mechanical design. We show that the test data, as measured during
the test campaigns undertaken at CEA-Saclay, at the Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory, and at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, indicate that the
instrument complies with its design requirements and goals. We also discuss the
operational requirements (multiple dithers and exposures) needed for optimal
scientific utilization of the MIRIM.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
A Herschel study of the properties of starless cores in the Polaris Flare dark cloud region using PACS and SPIRE
The Polaris Flare cloud region contains a great deal of extended emission. It
is at high declination and high Galactic latitude. It was previously seen
strongly in IRAS Cirrus emission at 100 microns. We have detected it with both
PACS and SPIRE on Herschel. We see filamentary and low-level structure. We
identify the five densest cores within this structure. We present the results
of a temperature, mass and density analysis of these cores. We compare their
observed masses to their virial masses, and see that in all cases the observed
masses lie close to the lower end of the range of estimated virial masses.
Therefore, we cannot say whether they are gravitationally bound prestellar
cores. Nevertheless, these are the best candidates to be potentialprestellar
cores in the Polaris cloud region.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&
New Models for Wolf-Rayet and O Star Populations in Young Starbursts
Using the latest stellar evolution models, theoretical stellar spectra, and a
compilation of observed emission line strengths from Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, we
construct evolutionary synthesis models for young starbursts. We explicitly
distinguish between the various WR subtypes (WN, WC, WO), and we treat O and Of
stars separately. We provide detailed predictions of UV and optical emission
line strengths for both the WR stellar lines and the major nebular hydrogen and
helium emission lines, as a function of several input parameters related to the
starburst episode. We also derive the theoretical frequency of WR-rich
starbursts. We then discuss: nebular HeII 4686 emission, the contribution of WR
stars to broad Balmer line emission, techniques used to derive the WR and O
star content from integrated spectra, and explore the implications of the
formation of WR stars through mass transfer in close binary systems in
instantaneous bursts. The observational features predicted by our models allow
a detailed quantitative determination of the massive star population in a
starburst region (particularly in so-called "WR galaxies") from its integrated
spectrum and provide a means of deriving the burst properties (e.g., duration,
age) and the parameters of the initial mass function of young starbursts.

Bisphenol A-Mediated Suppression of LPL Gene Expression Inhibits Triglyceride Accumulation during Adipogenic Differentiation of Human Adult Stem Cells
The endocrine disrupting chemical, bisphenol A (BPA), has been shown to accelerate the rate of adipogenesis and increase the amount of triglyceride accumulation during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. The objective of this study was to investigate if that observation is mirrored in human primary cells. Here we investigated the effect of BPA on adipogenesis in cultured human primary adult stem cells. Continuous exposure to BPA throughout the 14 days of differentiation dramatically reduced triglyceride accumulation and suppressed gene transcription of the lipogenic enzyme, lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Results presented in the present study show for the first time that BPA can reduce triglyceride accumulation during adipogenesis by attenuating the expression of LPL gene transcription. Also, by employing image cytometric analysis rather than conventional Oil red O staining techniques we show that BPA regulates triglyceride accumulation in a manner which does not appear to effect adipogenesis per se
