Device for mechanically stabilizing web ribbon buttons during growth initiation
The invention relates to a stabilization device for stabilizing dendritic web seed buttons during initiation of crystal growth from a float melt zone. The invention includes angular maintenance means for maintaining a constant angular orientation between the axis of a growth initiation seed and the upper surface of a web button during withdrawal of the web button from the melt. In the preferred embodiment, the angular means includes an adjustable elevation tube which surrounds the seed, the weight of which may be selectively supported by the seed button during web button withdrawal
Scriber for silicon wafers
A device for dividing silicon wafers into rectangular chips is characterized by a base including a horizontally oriented bed with a planar support surface, a vacuum chuck adapted to capture a silicon wafer seated on the support for translation in mutually perpendicular directions. A stylus support mounted on the bed includes a shaft disposed above and extended across the bed and a truck mounted on the shaft and supported thereby for linear translation along a path extended across the bed a vertically oriented scribe has a diamond tip supported by the truck also adapted as to engage a silicon wafer captured by the chuck and positioned beneath it in order to form score lines in the surface of the wafer as linear translation is imparted to the truck. A chuck positioning means is mounted on the base and is connected to the chuck for positioning the chuck relative to the stylus
Theory of mind, empathy and emotion perception in cortical and subcortical neurodegenerative diseases
Although the impact of neurodegenerative diseases on everyday interactions is well known in the literature, their impact on social cognitive processes remains unclear. The concept of social cognition refers to a set of skills, all of which are essential for living in a community. It involves social knowledge, perception and processing of social cues, and representation of mental states. This report is a review of recent findings on the impact of cortical and subcortical neurodegenerative diseases on three social cognitive processes, namely, the theory of mind, empathy and processing emotions. The focus here is on a conceptual approach to each of these skills and their cerebral underpinnings

Social cognition in normal and pathological aging
The concept of social cognition refers to a set of skills and to emotional and social experiences regulating relationships between individuals. This concept is appropriate in order to help us to explain individual human behaviours and behaviours in groups. Social cognition involves social knowledge, perception and processing of social cues, and the representation of mental states. The concept of social cognition thus refers to a multitude of skills. This paper stops on several of them, namely theory of mind, empathy, moral reasoning, emotional processing and emotional regulation. We propose a conceptual approach to each of these skills also stopping on their cerebral underpinnings. We also make an inventory of knowledge about the effects of age and neurodegenerative diseases on social cognition
Energy production in varying {\alpha} theories
Aims. On the basis the theoretical model proposed by Bekenstein for
{\alpha}'s variation, we analyze the equations that describe the energy
exchange between matter and both the electromagnetic and the scalar fields.
Methods. We determine how the energy flow of the material is modified by the
presence of a scalar field. We estimate the total magnetic energy of matter
from the "sum rules techniques". We compare the results with data obtained from
the thermal evolution of the Earth and other planets. Results. We obtain
stringent upper limits to the variations in {\alpha} that are comparable with
those obtained from atomic clock frequency variations. Conclusions. Our
constraints imply that the fundamental length scale of Bekenstein's theory "lB"
cannot be larger than Planck's length "lP"
Observation of the 1S0 - 3P0 clock transition in 27Al+
We report for the first time, laser spectroscopy of the 1S0 - 3P0 clock
transition in 27Al+. A single aluminum ion and a single beryllium ion are
simultaneously confined in a linear Paul trap, coupled by their mutual Coulomb
repulsion. This coupling allows the beryllium ion to sympathetically cool the
aluminum ion, and also enables transfer of the aluminum's electronic state to
the beryllium's hyperfine state, which can be measured with high fidelity.
These techniques are applied to a measurement of the clock transition
frequency, \nu = 1 121 015 393 207 851(8) Hz. They are also used to measure the
lifetime of the metastable clock state, \tau = 20.6 +/- 1.4 s, the ground state
1S0 g-factor, g_S = -0.00079248(14), and the excited state 3P0 g-factor, g_P =

Monitoring and analyzing exoplanetary transits from Argentina
Photometric observations of transits can be used to derive physical and orbital parameters of the system, like the planetary and stellar radius, orbital inclination and mean density of the star. Furthermore, monitoring possible periodic variations in transit timing of planets is important, since small changes can be caused by the presence of other planets or moons in the system. On the other hand, long term changes in the transit length can be due to the orbital precession of the planets. For these reasons we started an observational program dedicated to observe transits of known exoplanets with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of these planetary systems. In this work we present our first results obtained using the observational facilities in Argentina including the 2.15 telescope at CASLE
Cryostratigraphy and the Sublimation Unconformity in Permafrost from an Ultraxerous Environment, University Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica
The cryostratigraphy of permafrost in ultraxerous environments is poorly known. In this study, icy permafrost cores from University Valley (McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica) were analyzed for sediment properties, ground-ice content, types and distribution of cryostructures, and presence of unconformities. No active layer exists in the valley, but the ice table, a sublimation unconformity, ranges from 0 to 60 cm depth. The sediments are characterized as a medium sand, which classifies them as low to non-frost susceptible. Computed tomography (CT) scan images of the icy permafrost cores revealed composite cryostructures that included the structureless, porous visible, suspended and crustal types. These cryostructures were observed irrespective of ground-ice origin (vapour deposited and freezing of snow meltwater), suggesting that the type and distribution of cryostructures could not be used as a proxy to infer the mode of emplacement of ground ice. Volumetric ice content derived from the CT scan images underestimated measured volumetric ice content, but approached measured excess ice content. A palaeo-sublimation unconformity could not be detected from a change in cryostructures, but could be inferred from an increase in ice content at the maximum predicted ice table depth. This study highlights some of the unique ground-ice processes and cryostructures in ultraxerous environments
Nuclear halo and its scaling laws
We have proposed a procedure to extract the probability for valence particle
being out of the binding potential from the measured nuclear asymptotic
normalization coefficients. With this procedure, available data regarding the
nuclear halo candidates are systematically analyzed and a number of halo nuclei
are confirmed. Based on these results we have got a much relaxed condition for
nuclear halo occurrence. Furthermore, we have presented the scaling laws for
the dimensionless quantity of nuclear halo in terms of the
analytical expressions of the expectation value for the operator in a
