Development and application of an assay for uranyl complexation by fungal metabolites, including siderophores
An assay to detect UO2 2+ complexation was developed based on the chrome azurol S (CAS) assay for siderophores (B. Schwyn and J. B. Neilands, Anal. Biochem. 160:47-56, 1987) and was used to investigate the ability of fungal metabolites to complex actinides. In this assay the discoloration of two dyed agars (one containing a CAS-Fe3+ dye and the other containing a CAS-UO2 2+ dye) caused by ligands was quantified. The assay was tested by using the siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFO), and the results showed that there was a regular, reproducible relationship between discoloration and the amount of siderophore added. The ratio of the discoloration on the CAS-UO2 2+ agar to the discoloration on the CAS-Fe3+ agar was independent of the amount of siderophore added. A total of 113 fungi and yeasts were isolated from three soil samples taken from the Peak District National Park. The fungi were screened for the production of UO2 2+ chelators by using the CAS-based assay and were also tested specifically for hydroxamate siderophore production by using the hydroxamate siderophore auxotroph Aureobacterium flavescens JG-9. This organism is highly sensitive to the presence of hydroxamate siderophores. However, the CAS-based assay was found to be less sensitive than the A. flavescens JG-9 assay. No significant difference between the results for each site for the two tests was found. Three isolates were selected for further study and were identified as two Pencillium species and a Mucor species. Our results show that the new assay can be effectively used to screen fungi for the production of UO2 2+ chelating ligands. Tunable dipolar magnetism in high-spin molecular clusters
We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system
is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule,
with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D=-0.02K, is the magnetic
unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals whilst
preserving both spin ground-state and anisotropy. For every configuration,
molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing
interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic
behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at

Legal determinants of external finance revisited : the inverse relationship between investor protection and societal well-being
This paper investigates relationships between corporate governance traditions and quality of life as measured by a number of widely reported indicators. It provides an empirical analysis of indicators of societal health in developed economies using a classification based on legal traditions. Arguably the most widely cited work in the corporate governance literature has been the collection of papers by La Porta et al. which has shown, inter alia, statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for investor protection. We show statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for societal health. Our comparative evidence suggests that the interests of investors may not be congruent with the interests of wider society, and that the criteria for judging the effectiveness of approaches to corporate governance should not be restricted to financial metrics
Examining the Seyfert - Starburst Connection with Arcsecond Resolution Radio Continuum Observations
We compare the arcsecond-scale circumnuclear radio continuum properties
between five Seyfert and five starburst galaxies, concentrating on the search
for any structures that could imply a spatial or causal connection between the
nuclear activity and a circumnuclear starburst ring. No evidence is found in
the radio emission for a link between the triggering or feeding of nuclear
activity and the properties of circumnuclear star formation. Conversely, there
is no clear evidence of nuclear outflows or jets triggering activity in the
circumnuclear rings of star formation. Interestingly, the difference in the
angle between the apparent orientation of the most elongated radio emission and
the orientation of the major axis of the galaxy is on average larger in
Seyferts than in starburst galaxies, and Seyferts appear to have a larger
physical size scale of the circumnuclear radio continuum emission. The
concentration, asymmetry, and clumpiness parameters of radio continuum emission
in Seyferts and starbursts are comparable, as are the radial profiles of radio
continuum and near-infrared line emission. The circumnuclear star formation and
supernova rates do not depend on the level of nuclear activity. The radio
emission usually traces the near-infrared Br-gamma and H2 1-0 S(1) line
emission on large spatial scales, but locally their distributions are
different, most likely because of the effects of varying local magnetic fields

Insight into the OH polarimetric structure of OH 26.5+0.6
We present the first view of the magnetic field structure in the OH shell of
the extreme OH/IR star OH 26.5+0.6. MERLIN interferometric observations of this
object were obtained in December 1993 in full polarisation, at 1612, 1665 and
1667 MHz. The maser spots show a spheroidal distribution both at 1612 and 1667
MHz, while at 1665 MHz emission from the blue-shifted maser peak is
concentrated on the stellar position, and the red-shifted peak emission
exhibits a filamentary structure oriented on a SE-NW axis. The linear
polarisation in both main lines is rather faint, ranging from 9 to 20% at 1665
MHz and from 0 to 30% at 1667 MHz. At 1612 MHz most maser spots exhibit a
similar range of linear polarisation although those in the outermost parts of
the envelope reach values as high as 66%. This is particularly apparent in the
southern part of the shell. The detailed distribution of the polarisation
vectors could only be obtained at 1612 MHz. The polarisation vectors show a
highly structured distribution indicative of a poloidal magnetic field inclined
by 40-60 to the line of sight. The velocity distribution of the maser
spots with respect to the radial distance is well explained by an isotropic
outflow at constant velocity in the case of a prolate shaped spheroid envelope,

Observations of the 6 Centimeter Lines of OH in Evolved (OH/IR) Stars
Recent observational and theoretical advances have called into question
traditional OH maser pumping models in evolved (OH/IR) stars. The detection of
excited-state OH lines would provide additional constraints to discriminate
amongst these theoretical models. In this Letter, we report on VLA observations
of the 4750 MHz and 4765 MHz lines of OH toward 45 sources, mostly evolved
stars. We detect 4765 MHz emission in the star forming regions Mon R2 and LDN
1084, but we do not detect excited-state emission in any evolved stars. The
flux density and velocity of the 4765 MHz detection in Mon R2 suggests that a

Increased SK3 expression in DM1 lens cells leads to impaired growth through a greater calcium-induced fragility
Although cataract is a characteristic feature of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), little is known of the underlying mechanisms. We generated four lens epithelial cell lines derived from DM1 cataracts and two from age-matched, non-DM cataracts. Small-pool PCR revealed typical large triplet repeat expansions in the DM1 cells. Furthermore, real-time PCR analysis showed reduced SIX5 expression and increased expression of the Ca2+-activated K+ channel SK3 in the DM1 cells. These cells also exhibited longer population doubling times which did not arise through reduced proliferation, but rather increased cell death as shown by increased release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Using 86Rb+ as a tracer for K+, we found no difference in the resting K+ influx or efflux kinetics. In all cases, the ouabain sensitive component of the influx contributed ~50% of the total. However, stimulating internal Ca2+ by exposure to ionomycin not only caused greater stimulation of K+ (86Rb) efflux in the DM1 cells but also induced a higher rate of cell death (LDH assay). Since both the hyper-stimulation of K+ efflux and cell death were reduced by the highly specific SK inhibitor apamin, we suggest that increased expression of SK3 has a critical role in the increased Ca2+-induced fragility in DM1 cells. The present data, therefore, both help explain the lower epithelial cell density previously observed in DM1 cataracts and provide general insights into mechanisms underlying the fragility of other DM1-affected tissues
Discrete Source Survey of 6 GHz OH emission from PNe & pPNe and first 6 GHz images of K 3-35
The aim of this study is to investigate the physical properties of molecular
envelopes of planetary nebulae in their earliest stages of evolution. Using the
100m telescope at Effelsberg, we have undertaken a high sensitivity discrete
source survey for the first excited state of OH maser emission (J=5/2, 2PI3/2
at 6GHz) in the direction of planetary and proto-planetary nebulae exhibiting
18cm OH emission (main and/or satellite lines), and we further validate our
detections using the Nan\c{c}ay radio telescope at 1.6-1.7GHz and MERLIN
interferometer at 1.6-1.7 and 6GHz. Two sources have been detected at 6035MHz
(5cm), both of them are young (or very young) planetary nebulae. The first one
is a confirmation of the detection of a weak 6035MHz line in Vy 2-2. The second
one is a new detection, in K 3-35, which was already known to be an exceptional
late type star because it exhibits 1720MHz OH emission. The detection of
6035MHz OH maser emission is confirmed by subsequent observations made with the
MERLIN interferometer. These lines are very rarely found in evolved stars. The
1612MHz masers surround but are offset from the 1720 and 6035MHz masers which
in turn lie close to a compact 22GHz continuum source embedded in the optical

The Nature of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies, As Revealed from High-Resolution VLA Observations
A sample of 37 nearby galaxies displaying composite LINER/HII and pure HII
spectra was observed with the VLA in an investigation of the nature of their
weak radio emission. The resulting radio contour maps overlaid on optical
galaxy images are presented here, together with an extensive literature list
and discussion of the individual galaxies. Radio morphological data permit
assessment of the ``classical AGN'' contribution to the global activity
observed in these ``transition'' LINER galaxies. One in five of the latter
objects display clear AGN characteristics: these occur exclusively in

Search for radiative pumping lines of OH masers: I. The 34.6um absorption line towards 1612 MHz OH maser sources
The 1612 MHz hydroxyl maser in circumstellar envelopes has long been thought
to be pumped by 34.6um photons. Only recently, the Infrared Space Observatory
has made possible spectroscopic observations which enable the direct
confirmation of this pumping mechanism in a few cases. To look for the presence
of this pumping line, we have searched the Infrared Space Observatory Data
Archive and found 178 spectra with data around 34.6um for 87 galactic 1612MHz
masers. The analysis performed showed that the noise level and the spectral
resolution of the spectra are the most important factors affecting the
detection of the 34.6um absorption line. Only 5 objects from the sample (3 red
supergiants and 2 galactic center sources) are found to show clear 34.6um
absorption (all of them already known) while two additional objects only
tentatively show this line. The 3 supergiants show similar pump rates and their
masers might be purely radiatively pumped. The pump rates of OH masers in late
type stars are found to be about 0.05, only 1/5 of the theoretical value of
0.25 derived by Elitzur (1992). We have also found 16 maser sources which,
according to the analysis assuming Elitzur's pump rate, should show the 34.6
m absorption line but do not. These non-detections can be tentatively
explained by far-infrared photon pumping, clumpy nature of the OH masing region
or a limb-filling emission effect in the OH shell.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 table
