Annual trend patterns of phytoplankton species abundance belie homogeneous taxonomical group responses to climate in the NE Atlantic upwelling
Phytoplankton is a sentinel of marine ecosystem change. Composed by many species with different life-history strategies, it rapidly responds to environment changes. An analysis of the abundance of 54 phytoplankton species in Galicia (NW Spain) between 1989 and 2008 to determine the main components of temporal variability in relation to climate and upwelling showed that most of this variability was stochastic, as seasonality and long term trends contributed to relatively small fractions of the series. In general, trends appeared as non linear, and species clustered in 4 groups according to the trend pattern but there was no defined pattern for diatoms, dinoflagellates or other groups. While, in general, total abundance increased, no clear trend was found for 23 species, 14 species decreased, 4 species increased during the early 1990s, and only 13 species showed a general increase through the series. In contrast, series of local environmental conditions (temperature, stratification, nutrients) and climate-related variables (atmospheric pressure indices, upwelling winds) showed a high fraction of their variability in deterministic seasonality and trends. As a result, each species responded independently to environmental and climate variability, measured by generalized additive models. Most species showed a positive relationship with nutrient concentrations but only a few showed a direct relationship with stratification and upwelling. Climate variables had only measurable effects on some species but no common response emerged. Because its adaptation to frequent disturbances, phytoplankton communities in upwelling ecosystems appear less sensitive to changes in regional climate than other communities characterized by short and well defined productive periods.Versión del editor1,953
Characterization of Different Functionalized Lipidic Nanocapsules as Potential Drug Carriers
Lipid nanocapsules (LNC) based on a core-shell structure consisting of an oil-filled core with a surrounding polymer layer are known to be promising vehicles for the delivery of hydrophobic drugs in the new therapeutic strategies in anti-cancer treatments. The present work has been designed as basic research about different LNC systems. We have synthesized—and physico-chemically characterized—three different LNC systems in which the core was constituted by olive oil and the shell by different phospholipids (phosphatidyl-serine or lecithin) and other biocompatible molecules such as Pluronic® F68 or chitosan. It is notable that the olive-oil-phosphatidyl-serine LCN is a novel formulation presented in this work and was designed to generate an enriched carboxylic surface. This carboxylic layer is meant to link specific antibodies, which could facilitate the specific nanocapsule uptake by cancer cells. This is why nanoparticles with phosphatidyl-serine in their shell have also been used in this work to form immuno-nanocapsules containing a polyclonal IgG against a model antigen (C-reactive protein) covalently bounded by means of a simple and reproducible carbodiimide method. An immunological study was made to verify that these IgG-LNC complexes showed the expected specific immune response. Finally, a preliminary in vitro study was performed by culturing a breast-carcinoma cell line (MCF-7) with Nile-Red-loaded LNC. We found that these cancer cells take up the fluorescent Nile- Red molecule in a process dependent on the surface properties of the nanocarriers

Modelling the Ria of Arousa (NW Spain): preliminary results
4 pages, 3 figures.-- 1º Simpósio Interdisciplinar do Processos Estuarinos = 1st Interdisciplinary Symposium on Estuarine Processes, Faro, 15-17 de Junho de 1998The Ria of Arousa is rhe biggest estuary in the coast of Galicia (NW Spain) with 25 km long in its axis and 11 km wide. Furthermore it is the most irregular with several islands and a lot of bays and capes. Two rivers flow into this ris, the Ulla with a mean flow of 61 m3/s and the Umia with a mean flow of 10 m3/sThis work is partially supported by the Consellería de Pesca of the Xunta de Galicia, under project Estudio: Ordenación integral do Espacio Marítimo terrestre de GaliciaPeer reviewe
Efficacy and Safety of Tinzaparin in Prophylactic, Intermediate and Therapeutic Doses in Non-Critically Ill Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19: The PROTHROMCOVID Randomized Controlled Trial
Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 are at increased risk of thrombosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome and death. The optimal dosage of thromboprophylaxis is unknown. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tinzaparin in prophylactic, intermediate, and therapeutic doses in non-critical patients admitted for COVID-19 pneumonia. PROTHROMCOVID is a randomized, unblinded, controlled, multicenter trial enrolling non-critical, hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients were randomized to prophylactic (4500 IU), intermediate (100 IU/kg), or therapeutic (175 IU/kg) groups. All tinzaparin doses were administered once daily during hospitalization, followed by 7 days of prophylactic tinzaparin at discharge. The primary efficacy outcome was a composite endpoint of symptomatic systemic thrombotic events, need for invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation, or death within 30 days. The main safety outcome was major bleeding at 30 days. Of the 311 subjects randomized, 300 were included in the prespecified interim analysis (mean [SD] age, 56.7 [14.6] years; males, 182 [60.7%]). The composite endpoint at 30 days from randomization occurred in 58 patients (19.3%) of the total population; 19 (17.1 %) in the prophylactic group, 20 (22.1%) in the intermediate group, and 19 (18.5%) in the therapeutic dose group (p = 0.72). No major bleeding event was reported; non-major bleeding was observed in 3.7% of patients, with no intergroup differences. Due to these results and the futility analysis, the trial was stopped. In non-critically ill COVID-19 patients, intermediate or full-dose tinzaparin compared to standard prophylactic doses did not appear to affect the risk of thrombotic event, non-invasive ventilation, or mechanical ventilation or death. Didactics of knowledge management and digital humanities for cultural heritage contemporary preservation. From traditional dictionaries to libraries as a conversation
From traditional dictionaries to virtual libraries in heritage conservation, the process of Knowledge Management develops and students are part of the research and production of knowledge through conversations with librarians, archivists and digitisation specialists. Conversations and interactions in the real or face-to-face spectrum are reflected in the virtual framework thanks to technology, whose narratives go from being linear to interconnected thanks to metadata and retrieved through the keywords of dictionaries and thesauri in cultural heritage conservation. Previous teaching innovation experiences such as the Dictionary of "Basic Terminology of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage 2. Spanish - English - French - Italian - German" directed by Ana Calvo (PID 2015 no. 293) serve as a support point to understand the importance of terms and keywords in digital searches and are related to the classification thesauri of libraries. It is intended to continue with its development and study by the students by extending the terms to the praxis of risk management, integrated into the digital knowledge management cycle and making them accessible through the bibliography specialising in heritage conservation, gradually being implemented as a formula for conversation with the Library.Depto. de Pintura y Conservación-RestauraciónFac. de Bellas ArtesFALSEINNOVA-Docentiasubmitte
