    Estado psicológico de los estudiantes que asisten a un programa universitario para personas mayores: enfoque en los síntomas de ansiedad y depresión

    It is a fact that the global population is aging and Europe is the country with the largest proportion of population aged 60 years and over. studies have demonstrated the importance of social networks and social inclusion in the welfare of the elderly. The aim of the current study was to assess psychological status in a group of students participating in a university-based program for retired/elderly people. The hypothesis proposed was that participation in the program would have a positive impact on anxiety and depression symptoms. 45 individuals attending a program for retired/elderly people at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain, were assessed with the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). The assessment was done prior to the participation in the University-based curriculum, as well as eight months after. Socio-demographic data were also collected. Changes from time 1 to time 2 evaluations in total and factor scores for key dimensions of the BSI were analyzed. For doing so, T tests and multifactorial analyses -particularly focused on anxiety and depression symptoms- were used. A positive change following participation in the program was observed in most dimensions of the BSI, particularly in measures of anxiety and depression symptoms. The provision of special university-based programs for elderly/retired people may lead to positive outcomes in psychological status.Es cierto que la población mundial está envejeciendo. Europa es el país que tiene la mayor proporción de población de 60 años o más. En este sentido, diferentes estudios demuestran la importancia de las redes sociales y la inclusión social en el bienestar de las personas mayores.El objetivo del estudio es evaluar el estado psicológico de un grupo de estudiantes que participan en un programa universitario para personas mayores o jubiladas. La hipótesis de trabajo fue que la participación en el programa tendría un impacto positivo en los síntomas de ansiedad y depresión de los estudiantes. 45 personas que asistían a un programa para personas mayores/jubiladas en la Universidad del País Vasco en Bilbao, España, fueron evaluadas antes y después de ocho meses de participación en el currículo universitario, con el Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). También se recogieron datos sociodemográficos.Se analizaron los cambios de las evaluaciones de tiempo 1 a tiempo 2 en las puntuaciones totales y factoriales para las dimensiones clave de las partidas del balance mediante pruebas T y análisis multifactoriales, con especial atención en los síntomas de ansiedad y depresión. Se observó un cambio positivo tras la participación en el programa en la mayoría de las dimensiones, especialmente en las medidas de ansiedad y síntomas de depresión. La provisión de programas especiales basados en la universidad para personas mayores/jubiladas puede conducir a resultados positivos en el estado psicológico de las personas mayores. &nbsp

    Prevalence of burnout among teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic: a meta-analysis

    Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many studies have found that there has been a lot of teacher overload. One of the additional burdens has been that they have had to teach online. In addition, when they returned to face-to-face classes, they had to follow all the hygiene rules so that the COVID-19 virus would not spread. It is therefore not surprising that, during this pandemic period, high levels of psychological symptoms have been reported among teachers. Among this symptomatology, burnout has been very frequent among teachers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis to determine the overall prevalence of burnout among teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, a search was conducted for cross-sectional studies listed in PubMed from 1 December 2019 to 14 February 2022 that reported on the prevalence of burnout among teachers. A total of nine studies from eight different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America, were included in this study. The pooled prevalence of burnout among teachers was 52% (95% CI 33–71%), which is higher than burnout rates reported for health professionals. There was significant heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 99%, p-value < 0.001), and the prevalence of burnout was higher in women and school teachers (compared to university educators), and lower in American studies. This meta-analysis concludes that teachers worldwide experienced a high rate of burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has implications not only for the teachers themselves, but also for the quality of the education they were able to provide. This education has an influence on the student population. The possible long-term effects are yet to be determined

    Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a meta-analysis attending SDG 3 and 4 of the 2030 agenda

    Background: Most universities around the world have been heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, as declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Many students were isolated at home and underwent a forced transition from face-to-face learning to e-learning, at least in the first few months. The subsequent months and years were typically characterised by a slow return to normal learning under COVID-19 protocols and restrictions. A potential consequence of the lockdowns, social restrictions and changes to learning is the development of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) in university students, affecting their health and well-being (SDG3) and quality of education (SDG4). Materials and Methods: Medline was searched through PubMed for studies on the prevalence of PTSD in university students from 1 December 2019 to 31 December 2021. The pooled prevalence of PTSD was calculated with random-effects models. Results: A total of six studies were included, across which the prevalence of PTSD among university students was 23%. Meta-regression showed that the prevalence of PTSD was significantly higher with older age, but independent of the percentage of women in a study or its methodological quality. Conclusions: Our results suggest that students suffer from PTSD at a moderate rate. Measures are needed to address the mental health issues of university students that have arisen during COVID-19 all around the world. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

    Emotional State of Mexican University Students in the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Background: Since the WHO declared the COVID-19 crisis a pandemic in March 2020, the young population is suffering from a range of psychological symptoms. The present study measured symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression in university students of Saltillo, Mexico, using the Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Methods. The DASS-21 scale and an ad hoc questionnaire were used to collect sociodemographic information. Results: The results show that the students who participated in this study suffer from high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. In terms of sociodemographic variables, women, people suffering from a chronic disease and people living with a chronic disease had the highest levels of stress, anxiety and depression, and people who live with a chronically ill person, people who have had the COVID-19 disease and those who have had someone close to them fall sick have had more stress, anxiety and depression than the rest. Another finding of the present study is that university students who believe that others comply with COVID-19 safety measures have significantly lower anxiety and depression than those who believe that others do not comply. Conclusions: It is concluded that university students are a psychologically vulnerable group in the face of the pandemic. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

    Post-traumatic stress in children and adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic: a meta-analysis and intervention approaches to ensure mental health and well-being

    Background: Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, many measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the virus. Consequently, many minors have been confined to their homes and have had to subsequently adapt to countless protocol changes. These factors appear to have contributed to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in many children. Materials and Methods: The authors searched Medline through PubMed and other databases for studies published from 1 December 2019 to 31 December 2021 on the prevalence of PTSD in schoolchildren. The authors used a random-effects model to calculate the pooled prevalence of PTSD. Results: A total of six studies were included in this review. Our results show a pooled prevalence of PTSD of 14% in children and adolescents. Subgroup analyses identify a significantly higher prevalence of PTSD for studies conducted in China and a higher prevalence in boys. The prevalence of PTSD appeared independent of child age or the methodological rigor of the study. Conclusions: Our results suggest that a large number of children may be suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Public health measures are thus needed to improve children’s mental health during and after the pandemic, so that the suffering is mitigated to prevent long-lasting effects

    Changes in diet, sleep, and physical activity are associated with differences in negative mood during COVID-19 lockdown

    The United Kingdom and Scottish governments instigated a societal lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, many experienced substantial lifestyle changes alongside the stresses of potentially catching the virus or experiencing bereavement. Stressful situations and poorer health behaviors (e.g., higher alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, poorer sleep quality, physical inactivity) are frequently linked to poor mental health. Our objective was to examine changes in health behaviors and their relationship with negative mood during COVID-19 lockdown. We also considered associations between health behaviors and socio-demographic differences and COVID-19-induced changes. 399 participants completed a questionnaire asking about their personal situation and health behaviors during lockdown as well as a negative mood scale. The significance threshold for all analyses was α = 0.05. Poorer diet was linked to more-negative mood, and to changes to working status. Poorer sleep quality was linked with more-negative mood, and with ‘shielding’ from the virus. Being less physically active was related to more-negative mood and student status, whereas being more physically active was linked to having or suspecting COVID-19 infection within the household. Increased alcohol consumption was linked to living with children, but not to negative mood. Changes to diet, sleep quality, and physical activity related to differences in negative mood during COVID-19 lockdown. This study adds to reports on poor mental health during lockdown and identifies lifestyle restrictions and changes to health behaviors which may, to some extent, be responsible for higher negative mood. Our data suggests that it is advisable to maintain or improve health behaviors during pandemic-associated restrictions

    The Psychological State of Teachers During the COVID-19 Crisis: the Challenge of Returning to Face-to-Face Teaching

    Schools in Spain were closed in March 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In September 2020 most schools and universities in Spain reopened and teachers felt great uncertainty due to this unprecedented situation. Teachers have accumulated psychological symptoms since the beginning of the pandemic. During the lockdown they had to introduce online teaching and in view of the reopening of schools they have shown great concern for the new unprecedented teaching situation. The present study aims to measure the symptomatology shown by teaching staff in the Basque Autonomous Community at the time when schools were reopened. To do this, we recruited a sample of 1,633 teachers who were given an online questionnaire which, in addition to collecting socio-demographic data, measured stress, anxiety and depression using the DASS-21scale. The results revealed that a high percentage of teachers showed anxiety, depression and stress symptoms. Furthermore, variables such as gender, age, job stability, the level of education at which they teach and parental status also influence this symptomatology.     COVID-19: Psychological Flexibility, Coping, Mental Health, and Wellbeing in the UK during the pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly altered the daily lives of many people across the globe, both through the direct interpersonal cost of the disease, and the governmental restrictions imposed to mitigate its spread and impact. The UK has been particularly affected and has one of the highest mortality rates in Europe. In this paper, we examine the impact of COVID-19 on psychological health and well-being in the UK during a period of ‘lockdown’ (15th–21st May 2020) and the specific role of Psychological Flexibility as a potential mitigating process. We observed clinically high levels of distress in our sample (N=555). However, psychological flexibility was significantly and positively associated with greater wellbeing, and inversely related to anxiety, depression, and COVID-19-related distress. Avoidant coping behaviour was positively associated with all indices of distress and negatively associated with wellbeing, while engagement in approach coping only demonstrated weaker associations with outcomes of interest. No relationship between adherence to government guidelines and psychological flexibility was found. In planned regression models, psychological flexibility demonstrated incremental predictive validity for all distress and wellbeing outcomes (over and above both demographic characteristics and COVID-19-specific coping responses). Furthermore, psychological flexibility and COVID-19 outcomes were only part-mediated by coping responses to COVID-19, supporting the position that psychological flexibility can be understood as an overarching response style that is distinct from established conceptualisations of coping. We conclude that psychological flexibility represents a promising candidate process for understanding and predicting how an individual may be affected by, and cope with, both the acute and longer-term challenges of the pandemic
