A 12.5 GHz-Spaced Optical Frequency Comb Spanning >400 nm for near-Infrared Astronomical Spectrograph Calibration
A 12.5 GHz-spaced optical frequency comb locked to a Global Positioning
disciplined oscillator for near-IR spectrograph calibration is presented. The
comb is generated via filtering a 250 MHz-spaced comb. Subsequency nonlinear
broadening of the 12.5 GHz comb extends the wavelength range to cover 1380 nm
to 1820 nm, providing complete coverage over the H-band transmission widow of
Earth's atmosphere. Finite suppression of spurious sidemodes, optical linewidth
and instability of the comb have been examined to estmiate potential wavelength
biases in spectrograph calibration. Sidemode suppression varies between 20 db
and 45 dB, and the optical linewidth is ~350 kHz at 1550 nm. The comb frequency
uncertainty is bounded by +/- 30 kHz (corresponding to a radial velocity of +/-
5 cm/s), limited by the Global Positioning System disciplined oscillator
reference. These results indicate this comb can readily support radial velocity

The vertical distribution of ozone instantaneous radiative forcing from satellite and chemistry climate models
We evaluate the instantaneous radiative forcing (IRF) of tropospheric ozone predicted by four state-of-the-art global chemistry climate models (AM2-Chem, CAM-Chem, ECHAM5-MOZ, and GISS-PUCCINI) against ozone distribution observed from the NASA Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) during August 2006. The IRF is computed through the application of an observationally constrained instantaneous radiative forcing kernels (IRFK) to the difference between TES and model-predicted ozone. The IRFK represent the sensitivity of outgoing longwave radiation to the vertical and spatial distribution of ozone under all-sky condition. Through this technique, we find total tropospheric IRF biases from -0.4 to + 0.7 W/m(2) over large regions within the tropics and midlatitudes, due to ozone differences over the region in the lower and middle troposphere, enhanced by persistent bias in the upper troposphere-lower stratospheric region. The zonal mean biases also range from -30 to + 50 mW/m(2) for the models. However, the ensemble mean total tropospheric IRF bias is less than 0.2 W/m(2) within the entire troposphere
Genomic encyclopedia of sugar utilization pathways in the Shewanella genus
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Carbohydrates are a primary source of carbon and energy for many bacteria. Accurate projection of known carbohydrate catabolic pathways across diverse bacteria with complete genomes constitutes a substantial challenge due to frequent variations in components of these pathways. To address a practically and fundamentally important challenge of reconstruction of carbohydrate utilization machinery in any microorganism directly from its genomic sequence, we combined a subsystems-based comparative genomic approach with experimental validation of selected bioinformatic predictions by a combination of biochemical, genetic and physiological experiments.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We applied this integrated approach to systematically map carbohydrate utilization pathways in 19 genomes from the <it>Shewanella </it>genus. The obtained genomic encyclopedia of sugar utilization includes ~170 protein families (mostly metabolic enzymes, transporters and transcriptional regulators) spanning 17 distinct pathways with a mosaic distribution across <it>Shewanella </it>species providing insights into their ecophysiology and adaptive evolution. Phenotypic assays revealed a remarkable consistency between predicted and observed phenotype, an ability to utilize an individual sugar as a sole source of carbon and energy, over the entire matrix of tested strains and sugars.</p> <p>Comparison of the reconstructed catabolic pathways with <it>E. coli </it>identified multiple differences that are manifested at various levels, from the presence or absence of certain sugar catabolic pathways, nonorthologous gene replacements and alternative biochemical routes to a different organization of transcription regulatory networks.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The reconstructed sugar catabolome in <it>Shewanella </it>spp includes 62 novel isofunctional families of enzymes, transporters, and regulators. In addition to improving our knowledge of genomics and functional organization of carbohydrate utilization in Shewanella, this study led to a substantial expansion of our current version of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Carbohydrate Utilization. A systematic and iterative application of this approach to multiple taxonomic groups of bacteria will further enhance it, creating a knowledge base adequate for the efficient analysis of any newly sequenced genome as well as of the emerging metagenomic data.</p

A Cultural Quest: A Study of Organizational Use of New Cultural Resources in Strategy Formation.
Our study was motivated by the growing influence in cultural sociology and organizational research of the view of culture as a âtoolkitâ, from which individuals draw resources flexibly to develop strategies of action that address different circumstances. To investigate if and how organizations can also use new and diverse cultural resources, we undertook a historical case study of the incorporation of new cultural resources in an organizationâs cultural repertoire. In-depth analysis of four rounds of incorporation of new cultural resources led to the development of a robust theoretical model that identifies cultural repertoire enrichment and organizational identity redefinition as two core mechanisms that facilitate the use of new cultural resources for the development of unconventional strategies and strategic versatility. Overview of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Mission
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observes light in the
far-ultraviolet spectral region, 905 - 1187 A with high spectral resolution.
The instrument consists of four coaligned prime-focus telescopes and Rowland
spectrographs with microchannel plate detectors. Two of the telescope channels
use Al:LiF coatings for optimum reflectivity from approximately 1000 to 1187 A
and the other two use SiC coatings for optimized throughput between 905 and
1105 A. The gratings are holographically ruled to largely correct for
astigmatism and to minimize scattered light. The microchannel plate detectors
have KBr photocathodes and use photon counting to achieve good quantum
efficiency with low background signal. The sensitivity is sufficient to examine
reddened lines of sight within the Milky Way as well as active galactic nuclei
and QSOs for absorption line studies of both Milky Way and extra-galactic gas
clouds. This spectral region contains a number of key scientific diagnostics,
including O VI, H I, D I and the strong electronic transitions of H2 and HD.Comment: To appear in FUSE special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Generic flow profiles induced by a beating cilium
We describe a multipole expansion for the low Reynolds number fluid flows
generated by a localized source embedded in a plane with a no-slip boundary
condition. It contains 3 independent terms that fall quadratically with the
distance and 6 terms that fall with the third power. Within this framework we
discuss the flows induced by a beating cilium described in different ways: a
small particle circling on an elliptical trajectory, a thin rod and a general
ciliary beating pattern. We identify the flow modes present based on the

The correlated optical and radio variability of BL Lacertae. WEBT data analysis 1994-2005
Since 1997, BL Lacertae has undergone a phase of high optical activity, with
the occurrence of several prominent outbursts. Starting from 1999, the Whole
Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) consortium has organized various multifrequency
campaigns on this blazar, collecting tens of thousands of data points. One of
the main issues in the study of this huge dataset has been the search for
correlations between the optical and radio flux variations, and for possible
periodicities in the light curves. The analysis of the data assembled during
the first four campaigns (comprising also archival data to cover the period
1968-2003) revealed a fair optical-radio correlation in 1994-2003, with a delay
of the hard radio events of ~100 days. Moreover, various statistical methods
suggested the existence of a radio periodicity of ~8 years. In 2004 the WEBT
started a new campaign to extend the dataset to the most recent observing
seasons, in order to possibly confirm and better understand the previous
results. In this campaign we have collected and assembled about 11000 new
optical observations from twenty telescopes, plus near-IR and radio data at
various frequencies. Here, we perform a correlation analysis on the long-term
R-band and radio light curves. In general, we confirm the ~100-day delay of the
hard radio events with respect to the optical ones, even if longer (~200-300
days) time lags are also found in particular periods. The radio
quasi-periodicity is confirmed too, but the "period" seems to progressively
lengthen from 7.4 to 9.3 years in the last three cycles. The optical and radio
behaviour in the last forty years suggests a scenario where geometric effects
play a major role. In particular, the alternation of enhanced and suppressed

Infrastructure for Detector Research and Development towards the International Linear Collider
The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and
testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear
collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for
institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The
infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation
