    Facebook, como estrategia didáctica. Una experiencia en la educación media superior

    El uso de las tecnologías en casi todos los ámbitos de nuestra vida, ha llegado de manera intempestiva. Particularmente, en el ámbito académico y en el nivel medio superior, nos encontramos con jóvenes que trascurren varias horas del día utilizando las redes sociales. Los alumnos en su mayoría tienen acceso a más de una de esas redes, especialmente Facebook, con la que se comunican, comparten información personal y de intereses similares, contactan amigos, se unen a grupos y en ocasiones también crean contenidos propios para compartir en la red. Por ello, ante tal interés por parte de la población joven, Facebook se visualiza como una alternativa innovadora a las prácticas tradicionales dentro del salón de clase, para propiciar el intercambio de contenidos académicos, que permitan a profesores y alumnos acceder a una nueva forma de comunicación, de aprender y de enseñar. La finalidad de nuestra investigación fue conocer la opinión que tienen alumnos y maestro al respecto de la inclusión de Facebook en sus clases, como un recurso que apoye el proceso de enseñanza y de aprendizaje. La investigación que aquí se describe se realizó bajo el enfoque fenomenológico, para ello, primeramente, diseñamos y llevamos a cabo actividades de trabajo colaborativo en clases presenciales y a través de Facebook, posteriormente aplicamos, como instrumentos de recolección de datos, un cuestionario, una entrevista focal y observaciones, que permitieron conocer opiniones y percepciones de la experiencia compartida por los alumnos y el profesor. La investigación se realizó con un grupo de 44 alumnos de bachillerato, se indagaron sus hábitos como internautas y en general su opinión sobre el uso de las tecnologías en el ámbito educativo, además se investigaron condiciones que pueden favorecer u obstaculizar la adquisición de aprendizajes significativos a través de estos recursos

    Evaluation of a university educational model: A perspective from the actors

    En el ámbito de las instituciones educativas la evaluación es considerada como un proceso esencial para la mejora continua. Son elementos de evaluación la administración, los alumnos, los docentes y también los modelos educativos bajo los cuales se desarrolla el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. La evaluación de un modelo educativo permite identificar elementos clave que requieren atención inmediata para alcanzar las metas del aprendizaje. Esta investigación analizó el estado de apropiación del Modelo Educativo de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Cuajimalpa (UAMC), un modelo centrado en el aprendizaje que a diez años de su creación todavía no es conocido ni utilizado por la totalidad de los alumnos ni de los profesores. En este texto se exponen primeramente las concepciones de la evaluación y la importancia de realizarlas. Se describe el Modelo Educativo de la UAMC y el método utilizado para su evaluación. Posteriormente se presentan los factores que inciden en el alumnado y en el profesorado para su apropiación. Para la obtención de los datos del trabajo de campo se efectuó una investigación cuantitativa y cualitativa. The assessment of an educative model allows identifying key elements that require immediate attention to reach learning goals. This research analyzed the status of ownership of the Educative Model of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Cuajimalpa (UAMC), a model focused on learning that ten years after its creation is not yet known or used by all the students or the teachers. In this text are firstly exposed the conceptions of assessment and the importance of realizing them. The Educative Model of the UAMC is described, as well as the method used for its assessment.     La amelogénesis imperfecta corresponde a un grupo desordenes hereditarios que afectan el desarrollo del esmalte dental en un individuo, afectando la estructura histológica y comprometiendo la apariencia clínica de todos o casi todos los dientes, tanto temporales como permanentes. Se caracteriza por que el esmalte presenta diversos fenotipos que incluyen los tipos hipoplásica, la hipomadurativa y la hipocalcificante. En este artículo se hace una revisión de la literatura sobre el origen genético de la amelogénesis imperfecta. SUMMARY Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) corresponds to a set of hereditary disorders, which affects the enamel development in people. It affects the enamel histological structure, and the clinical appearance of the temporal and permanent teeth.     Physical and chemical attributes of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) varieties Copena, Pelon Blanco and Pelon Rojo

    Objective: attest and compare the fundamental attributes for fresh raw cactus cladodes and its chemical constituent’s quality when dried and grounded for three varieties of cactus prickly; copena, pelon blanco y pelon rojo. Design/methodology/approach: measurements of physical attributes and chemical constituents were made by using proved and reliable techniques. Data will aid to explore the potential for these cactus material when being handled from basic to complex processes, taking into account; its need for size and quality of storage and their effect when they interact with processing devices and handling apparatus for the new product being elaborated. Results: physical attributes among the three cactus´ varieties showed slightly differences on parameters, but length, wide and electric conductivity. While for chemical analysis, cactus cladodes were chopped, dried and grounded. Chemical compounds showed slightly differences between the three varieties, but pelon blanco had higher percentage of fat and lowest concentration of zinc and potassium. All three varieties had no iron. Limitations on study/implications: there was not management for cactus prickly production. Varieties´ attributes are as they come from the field. Stabilization of chemical constituents for pelon blanco could be necessary, according to the expected features of new products, or lead to a new line of by-products. Findings/conclusions: mechanical handling of raw cladodes around the premises is facilitated, and its wear and maintenance are reduced, less management costs. Flour from each variety was kept at around 10% water content to safeguarding storage.     Es importante establecer y visibilizar a los estudiantes los beneficios relacionados con la formación en investigación, dentro de los cuales encontramos el fortalecimiento de las capacidades de liderazgo así como el compromiso activo y las experiencias en independencia y colaboración. Así mismo, la formación integral hacia una mayor apreciación del valor de la literatura disciplinaria, generando de esta manera habilidades de pensamiento crítico, indagación y análisis.     ST6GAL1-mediated aberrant sialylation promotes prostate cancer progression.

    Aberrant glycosylation is a universal feature of cancer cells, and cancer-associated glycans have been detected in virtually every cancer type. A common change in tumour cell glycosylation is an increase in α2,6 sialylation of N-glycans, a modification driven by the sialyltransferase ST6GAL1. ST6GAL1 is overexpressed in numerous cancer types, and sialylated glycans are fundamental for tumour growth, metastasis, immune evasion, and drug resistance, but the role of ST6GAL1 in prostate cancer is poorly understood. Here, we analyse matched cancer and normal tissue samples from 200 patients and verify that ST6GAL1 is upregulated in prostate cancer tissue. Using MALDI imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS), we identify larger branched α2,6 sialylated N-glycans that show specificity to prostate tumour tissue. We also monitored ST6GAL1 in plasma samples from >400 patients and reveal ST6GAL1 levels are significantly increased in the blood of men with prostate cancer. Using both in vitro and in vivo studies, we demonstrate that ST6GAL1 promotes prostate tumour growth and invasion. Our findings show ST6GAL1 introduces α2,6 sialylated N-glycans on prostate cancer cells and raise the possibility that prostate cancer cells can secrete active ST6GAL1 enzyme capable of remodelling glycans on the surface of other cells. Furthermore, we find α2,6 sialylated N-glycans expressed by prostate cancer cells can be targeted using the sialyltransferase inhibitor P-3FAX -Neu5Ac. Our study identifies an important role for ST6GAL1 and α2,6 sialylated N-glycans in prostate cancer progression and highlights the opportunity to inhibit abnormal sialylation for the development of new prostate cancer therapeutics. © 2023 The Authors.     Upregulation of GALNT7 in prostate cancer modifies O-glycosylation and promotes tumour growth.

    Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and it is estimated that over 350,000 men worldwide die of prostate cancer every year. There remains an unmet clinical need to improve how clinically significant prostate cancer is diagnosed and develop new treatments for advanced disease. Aberrant glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer implicated in tumour growth, metastasis, and immune evasion. One of the key drivers of aberrant glycosylation is the dysregulated expression of glycosylation enzymes within the cancer cell. Here, we demonstrate using multiple independent clinical cohorts that the glycosyltransferase enzyme GALNT7 is upregulated in prostate cancer tissue. We show GALNT7 can identify men with prostate cancer, using urine and blood samples, with improved diagnostic accuracy than serum PSA alone. We also show that GALNT7 levels remain high in progression to castrate-resistant disease, and using in vitro and in vivo models, reveal that GALNT7 promotes prostate tumour growth. Mechanistically, GALNT7 can modify O-glycosylation in prostate cancer cells and correlates with cell cycle and immune signalling pathways. Our study provides a new biomarker to aid the diagnosis of clinically significant disease and cements GALNT7-mediated O-glycosylation as an important driver of prostate cancer progression

    Canagliflozin and renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes and nephropathy

    BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide, but few effective long-term treatments are available. In cardiovascular trials of inhibitors of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), exploratory results have suggested that such drugs may improve renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS In this double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuric chronic kidney disease to receive canagliflozin, an oral SGLT2 inhibitor, at a dose of 100 mg daily or placebo. All the patients had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30 to <90 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area and albuminuria (ratio of albumin [mg] to creatinine [g], >300 to 5000) and were treated with renin–angiotensin system blockade. The primary outcome was a composite of end-stage kidney disease (dialysis, transplantation, or a sustained estimated GFR of <15 ml per minute per 1.73 m2), a doubling of the serum creatinine level, or death from renal or cardiovascular causes. Prespecified secondary outcomes were tested hierarchically. RESULTS The trial was stopped early after a planned interim analysis on the recommendation of the data and safety monitoring committee. At that time, 4401 patients had undergone randomization, with a median follow-up of 2.62 years. The relative risk of the primary outcome was 30% lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group, with event rates of 43.2 and 61.2 per 1000 patient-years, respectively (hazard ratio, 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59 to 0.82; P=0.00001). The relative risk of the renal-specific composite of end-stage kidney disease, a doubling of the creatinine level, or death from renal causes was lower by 34% (hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.53 to 0.81; P<0.001), and the relative risk of end-stage kidney disease was lower by 32% (hazard ratio, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.86; P=0.002). The canagliflozin group also had a lower risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke (hazard ratio, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.67 to 0.95; P=0.01) and hospitalization for heart failure (hazard ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.47 to 0.80; P<0.001). There were no significant differences in rates of amputation or fracture. CONCLUSIONS In patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular events was lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group at a median follow-up of 2.62 years
