    Have you seen a rape kit? A snapshot at the quality of care of rape survivors in Nigerian tertiary hospitals

    Context: The rape kit has become a fundamental tool in the evaluation of the rape survivor in many countries. Itsavailability and use in Nigeria has however not been documented.Objective: To assess the current availability and usage of the rape kit in Nigerian tertiary hospitals, and evaluate the management of rape survivors.Methodology: Resident Doctors attending the Obstetrics and Gynaecology update course, held in Abuja in March,2009 were interviewed using a self-administered questionnaire assessing experience in rape management, knowledge about the rape kit and its availability, as well as current management of rape survivors.Results: There were 138 respondents from 25 tertiary hospitals, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.8:1 and a meanduration of 3.3 (SD 1.4) years in training. 120 (87%) had personally managed one or more rape survivor(s), but none of the respondents had ever seen a rape kit, and only 29% were aware of it. Although all the respondents indicated availability of emergency contraception, antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis in their centres, only 32.4% had access to HBV vaccine, and about 8% indicated lack of HIV prophylaxis. Only 28.7% and 45.6% indicated access to clinical psychologists and medical social workers respectively.Conclusion: The rape kit is not available in Nigerian tertiary hospitals. We recommend its provision, and regulartraining of doctors, especially Obstetrics and Gynaecology Residents on rape management, to improve the care ofrape survivors in Nigeria.Key Words: Rape, Rape kit, Rape survivor, Nigeria

    BTC price volatility: Fundamentals versus information

    This paper offers a plausible response to “what explains the sporadic volatility in the price of Bitcoin?” We hypothesized that market “fundamentals” and “information demands” are key drivers of Bitcoin’s unpredictable price fluctuation. We adopt the transfer-function [Autoregressive Distributed Lag, ARDL] model and its Bounds testing approach to verify how the volatility of the price of Bitcoin responds to its transaction volume, cryptocurrency market capitalisation, world market equity index and Google search. We found the existence of long-run cointegration relation and observed that all the variables except the equity index positively explain the volatility of Bitcoin price. The result established evidence that market fundamentals drive erratic swing in Bitcoin price than information. Keywords: Bitcoin price volatility Bitcoin market fundamentals information demand ARD

    PET/CT without capacity limitations: a Danish experience from a European perspective

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Objectives We report the 3-year clinical experience of a large new Danish PET/CT centre without capacity limitations in relation to national and European developments. Methods The use of PET/CT in cancer was registered from early 2006 to early 2009 to judge the impact on patient management and to compare it with national and European trends. Results 6056 PET/CT examinations were performed in 4327 patients. Activity increased by 86 examinations per month compared with the same month the year before. Referrals came primarily from oncology (23.0%), haematology (21.6%), surgery (12.6%), internal medicine (12.7%) and gynaecology (5.5%). Referral indications were diagnosis (31.3%), staging (22.3%), recurrence detection (21.2%), response evaluation (17.0%) and other (8.2%). Response from nearly 60 % of users showed that PET/CT caused a change in diagnosis and/or staging and/or treatment plan in 36.0 % of cases. During the study period, there was a steep increase in the national use of FDG and in the European use of PET/CT.     Improving Light and Soundscapes for Wildlife Use of Highway Crossing Structures

    UC-ITS-2020-03Transportation and other agencies and organizations are increasingly planning and building under- and over-crossing structures for wildlife to traverse busy highways. However, if wildlife do not use these structures due to noise, light, and other factors, then the structures may have a low benefit to cost ratio. Several criteria are key for their success\u2014 sufficient safety and/or conservation need, cost, location, and anticipated use by wildlife. There is limited information in wildlife-crossing guidance on how wildlife biologists should advise designers, engineers, and architects on the use of structural and vegetation elements that could reduce noise and light disturbances. To address this problem, this study used field measurements and modeling of light and noise from traffic to inform and test the designs of two wildlife overcrossings. Wildlife-responsive designs were developed and tested for two crossings being considered or planned by California Department of Transportation in California. For the planned crossing of US 101 near the city of Agoura Hills (the Wallis-Annenberg crossing), the three designs consisted of noise/glare barriers; noise/glare barriers + berm; and noise/glare barriers + multiple berms. For the potential crossing of Interstate 15 south of Temecula, one design used noise/glare barriers of 3 different heights and the other had no barriers. Key limitations and opportunities for each design approach were identified. Creating \u201cdark and quiet paths\u201d using a combination of berms and noise/glare barriers could decrease disturbance in the crossing structure approach zones and increase the wildlife-responsiveness of the designs

    A study of the impact of building geometry on the thermal performance of road pavement solar collectors

    Studies on RPSC (road pavement solar collectors) have shown the potential of reducing the UHI (urban heat island) effects by dissipating the heat from the pavement for energy harness. Several works have shown that the generated heat could be utilised for sustainable urban energy system. However, none of the previous literatures have assessed the effect of building geometry on the performance of the RPSC. This study investigates the thermal performance of an urban-integrated RPSC system by using CFD (computational fluid dynamic) simulation of integrated RPSC system with a standard urban canyon domain and an empty domain. Based on 21st June at 13:00, it was found that the RPSC system in urban canyon domain was on average 36.08% more effective in thermal collection and provided on average 27.11% more surface temperature reduction as compared to the RSPC application in rural/flat domain. The RPSC performance based on the effect from daily solar intensity was initiated with results demonstrated the efficiency of the RPSC in an urban setting was 7.14%–63.26% more than the rural/flat setting. Simulations of various wind speeds in summer day(s) and the impact of seasonal changes to the RPSC system were also conducted to investigate the deficiency factors to the system

    Mechanical, durability and microstructure properties of cold asphalt emulsion mixtures with different types of filler

    The primary aim of this study is to investigate the enhancement of Cold Asphalt Emulsion Mixtures (CAEMs) using binary and ternary blended fillers (BBF and TBF), including an in-depth assessment of the microstructure. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) were used for the BBF while silica fume (SF) was added to the BBF to obtain TBF. The mechanical and durability results indicated that the TBF was more suitable than the BBF for the production of CAEMs. The microstructural assessment indicated that the effect of BBF on the internal microstructure of CAEMs was slightly negative and more noticeable in CAEMs containing FA. It is proposed that the addition of SF to BBF mixtures can eliminate the delay in formation of hydration products caused by the bitumen emulsion. Overall, the research suggests that the use of BBF-CAEMs might be appropriate for pavements in cold climate whereas TBF-CAEMs would be effective in road pavements exposed to severe conditions both in hot and cold climates

    Stellar structure and compact objects before 1940: Towards relativistic astrophysics

    Since the mid-1920s, different strands of research used stars as "physics laboratories" for investigating the nature of matter under extreme densities and pressures, impossible to realize on Earth. To trace this process this paper is following the evolution of the concept of a dense core in stars, which was important both for an understanding of stellar evolution and as a testing ground for the fast-evolving field of nuclear physics. In spite of the divide between physicists and astrophysicists, some key actors working in the cross-fertilized soil of overlapping but different scientific cultures formulated models and tentative theories that gradually evolved into more realistic and structured astrophysical objects. These investigations culminated in the first contact with general relativity in 1939, when J. Robert Oppenheimer and his students George Volkoff and Hartland Snyder systematically applied the theory to the dense core of a collapsing neutron star. This pioneering application of Einstein's theory to an astrophysical compact object can be regarded as a milestone in the path eventually leading to the emergence of relativistic astrophysics in the early 1960s.Comment: 83 pages, 4 figures, submitted to the European Physical Journal
