    Analysis of creative and logical-spatial skills in blind children and adolescents

    This paper displays the Action-research project “Analysis and strengthening of divergent thinking in blind and visually impaired children and adolescents”, funded by the University of Catania. In light of the importance of divergent and logical-spatial skills for these subjects, in terms of life skills and good educational practices, this research project is aimed to achieve the following objectives a) to realize divergent and logical-spatial skills assessment tools and to verify the validity of these instruments; b) to explore the factors of divergent thinking in order to better understand the most deficient skills; c) to proceed with the strengthening of the more inadequate divergent abilities in the subjects. We had Stamperia Braille of Catania print the Williams’ Test of divergent thinking (TCD protocol A and B) and the Raven Matrices (standard SPM and colored CPM) in relief by thermoforming on PVC with relief height not lower than 0.9mm in order to allow the haptic understanding of stimuli by the blind. For visually impaired subjects the instruments are made using full color four-color laser printing on 80gr / mq paper. In this phase of the research, in agreement with the Italian Blind Union of Catania, we began to administer these tools to five blind subjects

    Fermi-surface transformation across the pseudogap critical point of the cuprate superconductor La1.6−x_{1.6-x}Nd0.4_{0.4}Srx_{x}CuO4_4

    The electrical resistivity ρ\rho and Hall coefficient RH_H of the tetragonal single-layer cuprate Nd-LSCO were measured in magnetic fields up to H=37.5H = 37.5 T, large enough to access the normal state at T→0T \to 0, for closely spaced dopings pp across the pseudogap critical point at p⋆=0.235p^\star = 0.235. Below p⋆p^\star, both coefficients exhibit an upturn at low temperature, which gets more pronounced with decreasing pp. Taken together, these upturns show that the normal-state carrier density nn at T=0T = 0 drops upon entering the pseudogap phase. Quantitatively, it goes from n=1+pn = 1 + p at p=0.24p = 0.24 to n=pn = p at p=0.20p = 0.20. By contrast, the mobility does not change appreciably, as revealed by the magneto-resistance. The transition has a width in doping and some internal structure, whereby RH_H responds more slowly than ρ\rho to the opening of the pseudogap. We attribute this difference to a Fermi surface that supports both hole-like and electron-like carriers in the interval 0.2<p<p⋆0.2 < p < p^\star, with compensating contributions to RH_H. Our data are in excellent agreement with recent high-field data on YBCO and LSCO. The quantitative consistency across three different cuprates shows that a drop in carrier density from 1+p1 + p to pp is a universal signature of the pseudogap transition at T=0T=0. We discuss the implication of these findings for the nature of the pseudogap phase.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure

    Identity inclusiveness and centrality: investigating identity correlates of attitudes toward immigrants and immigration policies

    Social psychology highlights ingroup identity as an important determinant of intergroup attitudes and relations; however, research has demonstrated that its effects can be positive, negative, or nonexistent depending on how such identity is conceptualized. This research explores how national identity inclusiveness (Study 1) and centrality (Study 2) are associated with immigration related attitudes in school and countrywide settings, respectively. Study 1 showed that teachers’ inclusive (i.e., overlapping) identities regarding their immigrant students related to positive attitudes toward these students, but not to attitudes about immigrants in general or immigration policy preferences. Study 2 found that national identity centrality was related to negative attitudes toward the social impact of immigrants, and to higher support for policies inhibiting the social inclusion of immigrants in the receiving community. Combined, these studies highlight the importance of considering different conceptualizations of ingroup identity in identifying relations to immigration‐based attitudes. Moreover, the studies highlight the value of promoting inclusive identities when aiming to improve attitudes toward immigrants.     Empowering the migrant and refugee family's parenting skills: a literature review

    Bachground: Worldwide, more than 79.5 million people are forcibly displaced, including a significant number of migrant and refugee families with children. Migration and refugeedom affect these families in different dimensions, such as mental, physical and spiritual health. Identifying family needs and enhancing parenting skills can improve family cohesion and health, as well as smooth integration into the host country. This review is part of the Erasmus+ funded project- IENE 8 (Intercultural Education for Nurses in Europe) aiming at empowering migrant and refugee families regarding parenting skills. Methods: This was a scoping review of literature. The IENE 8 partner countries (Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, and United Kingdom) searched for peer reviewed papers, grey literature and mass media reports at international, European and national level. The time period for the search of scientific and grey literature was between2013-2018, and for mass media, it was between 2016 and 2018. Results: 124 relevant sources were identified. They included 33 Peer reviewed papers, 47 Grey literature documents and 44 mass media reports. This revealed the importance of understanding the needs of migrant families with children. Conclusion: It is evident from the literature that there is a need to support refugee parents to adjust their existing skill and to empower them to develop new ones. Healthcare and social services professionals have an essential role in improving the refugees' parenting skills. This can be done by developing and implementing family-centered and culturally-sensitive intervention programs

    Perturbation Study of the Conductance through an Interacting Region Connected to Multi-Mode Leads

    We study the effects of electron correlation on transport through an interacting region connected to multi-mode leads based on the perturbation expansion with respect to the inter-electron interaction. At zero temperature the conductance defined in the Kubo formalism can be written in terms of a single-particle Green's function at the Fermi energy, and it can be mapped onto a transmission coefficient of the free quasiparticles described by an effective Hamiltonian. We apply this formulation to a two-dimensional Hubbard model of finite size connected to two noninteracting leads. We calculate the conductance in the electron-hole symmetric case using the order U2U^2 self-energy. The conductance shows several maximums in the UU dependence in some parameter regions of ty/txt_y/t_x, where txt_x (tyt_y) is the hopping matrix element in the xx- (yy-) directions. This is caused by the resonance occurring in some of the subbands, and is related with the UU dependence of the eigenvalues of the effective Hamiltonian.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, to be published in J.Phys.Soc.Jpn. 71(2002)No.

    Crossover from the chiral to the standard universality classes in the conductance of a quantum wire with random hopping only

    The conductance of a quantum wire with off-diagonal disorder that preserves a sublattice symmetry (the random hopping problem with chiral symmetry) is considered. Transport at the band center is anomalous relative to the standard problem of Anderson localization both in the diffusive and localized regimes. In the diffusive regime, there is no weak-localization correction to the conductance and universal conductance fluctuations are twice as large as in the standard cases. Exponential localization occurs only for an even number of transmission channels in which case the localization length does not depend on whether time-reversal and spin rotation symmetry are present or not. For an odd number of channels the conductance decays algebraically. Upon moving away from the band center transport characteristics undergo a crossover to those of the standard universality classes of Anderson localization.     The random magnetic flux problem in a quantum wire

    The random magnetic flux problem on a lattice and in a quasi one-dimensional (wire) geometry is studied both analytically and numerically. The first two moments of the conductance are obtained analytically. Numerical simulations for the average and variance of the conductance agree with the theory. We find that the center of the band Ï”=0\epsilon=0 plays a special role. Away from Ï”=0\epsilon=0, transport properties are those of a disordered quantum wire in the standard unitary symmetry class. At the band center Ï”=0\epsilon=0, the dependence on the wire length of the conductance departs from the standard unitary symmetry class and is governed by a new universality class, the chiral unitary symmetry class. The most remarkable property of this new universality class is the existence of an even-odd effect in the localized regime: Exponential decay of the average conductance for an even number of channels is replaced by algebraic decay for an odd number of channels.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX; 9 figures included; to appear in Physical Review

    Continuous low-dose cyclophosphamide and methotrexate combined with celecoxib for patients with advanced cancer

    BACKGROUND: Combined therapy of metronomic cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and high-dose celecoxib targeting angiogenesis was used in a phase II trial. METHODS: Patients with advanced cancer received oral cyclophosphamide 50 mg o.d., celecoxib 400 mg b.d. and methotrexate 2.5 mg b.d. for two consecutive days each week. Response was determined every 8 weeks; toxicity was evaluated according to CTC version 2.0. Plasma markers of inflammation, coagulation and angiogenesis were measured. RESULTS: Sixty-seven of 69 patients were evaluable for response. Twenty-three patients had stable disease (SD) after 8 weeks, but there were no objective responses to therapy. Median time to progression was 57 days. There was a low incidence of toxicities. Among plasma markers, levels of tissue factor were higher in the SD group of patients at baseline, and levels of both angiopoietin-1 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 increased in the progressive disease group only. There were no changes in other plasma markers. CONCLUSION: This metronomic approach has negligible activity in advanced cancer albeit with minimal toxicity. Analysis of plasma markers indicates minimal effects on endothelium in this trial. These data for this particular regimen do not support basic tenets of metronomic chemotherapy, such as the ability to overcome resistant tumours by targeting the endothelium

    EUSEDcollab: a network of data from European catchments to monitor net soil erosion by water

    As a network of researchers we release an open-access database (EUSEDcollab) of water discharge and suspended sediment yield time series records collected in small to medium sized catchments in Europe. EUSEDcollab is compiled to overcome the scarcity of open-access data at relevant spatial scales for studies on runoff, soil loss by water erosion and sediment delivery. Multi-source measurement data from numerous researchers and institutions were harmonised into a common time series and metadata structure. Data reuse is facilitated through accompanying metadata descriptors providing background technical information for each monitoring station setup. Across ten European countries, EUSEDcollab covers over 1600 catchment years of data from 245 catchments at event (11 catchments), daily (22 catchments) and monthly (212 catchments) temporal resolution, and is unique in its focus on small to medium catchment drainage areas (median = 43 km(2), min = 0.04 km(2), max = 817 km(2)) with applicability for soil erosion research. We release this database with the aim of uniting people, knowledge and data through the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO)

    Relationship of Weather Types on the Seasonal and Spatial Variability of Rainfall, Runoff, and Sediment Yield in the Western Mediterranean Basin

    Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern.
