    Invariance Violation Extends the Cosmic Ray Horizon ?

    We postulate in the present paper that the energy-momentum relation is modified for very high energy particles to violate Lorentz invariance and the speed of photon is changed from the light velocity c. The violation effect is amplified, in a sensitive way to detection, through the modified kinematical constraints on the conservation of energy and momentum, in the absorption process of gamma-rays colliding against photons of longer wavelengths and converting into an electron-positron pair. For gamma-rays of energies higher than 10 TeV, the minimum energy of the soft photons for the reaction and then the absorption mean free path of gamma-rays are altered by orders of magnitude from the ones conventionally estimated. Consideration is similarly applied to high energy cosmic ray protons. The consequences may require the standard assumptions on the maximum distance that very high energy radiation can travel from to be revised.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Ap J Letter

    The extent of and factors associated with self-reported overdose and self-reported receipt of naloxone among people who inject drugs (PWID) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

    BACKGROUND: Overdose is a major cause of death among PWID, and for opioid overdoses naloxone administration can reduce harm. However, globally there is limited national level data on the extent of non-fatal overdose and naloxone uptake. The first national level data on the extent of self-reported overdose and self-reported receipt of naloxone among UK PWID, providing a baseline to monitor the impact of the recent policy change regarding naloxone availability, is presented. METHODS: Data on self-reported overdose and receipt of naloxone during the preceding year for 2013-2014 from a national survey of PWID was analysed. Participants who reported injecting during the preceding year were included. RESULTS: Participants (3850) were predominantly male (75%); mean age was 36 years. The most commonly injected drugs were: heroin (91%), crack (45%) and amphetamine (29%). 15% (591) reported overdosing during the preceding year. There were no differences in the proportion reporting overdose by age or gender, but overdose was more common among those who: injected multiple drugs; recently ceased addiction treatment; injected with used needles/syringes; ever had transactional sex; had used a sexual health clinic or emergency department and lived in Wales or Northern Ireland. Among those reporting an overdose during the preceding year, a third reported two to four overdoses and 7.5% five or more overdoses; half reported receiving naloxone. Those reporting naloxone receipt in the preceding year were more likely to: live in Wales or Northern Ireland; ever received used needles/syringes; ever been imprisoned; and less likely to have injected two drug types. CONCLUSION: These data provide a baseline for monitoring the impact of the 2015 UK policy change to improve take-home naloxone access. Interventions tackling overdose should promote naloxone awareness and access, and target those who; are poly-drug injectors, have ceased treatment, share needles/syringes and whose drug use links to sexual activity

    Inspiratory pressure-generating capacity is preserved during ventilatory and non-ventilatory behaviours in young dystrophic mdx mice despite profound diaphragm muscle weakness

    Diaphragm dysfunction is recognized in the mdx mouse model of muscular dystrophy, however there is a paucity of information concerning the neural control of dystrophic respiratory muscles. In young adult (8 weeks of age) male wild‐type and mdx mice, we assessed ventilatory capacity, neural activation of the diaphragm and external intercostal (EIC) muscles and inspiratory pressure‐generating capacity during ventilatory and non‐ventilatory behaviours. We hypothesized that respiratory muscle weakness is associated with impaired peak inspiratory pressure‐generating capacity in mdx mice. Ventilatory responsiveness to hypercapnic hypoxia was determined in conscious mice by whole‐body plethysmography. Diaphragm isometric and isotonic contractile properties were determined ex vivo. In anaesthetized mice, thoracic oesophageal pressure, and diaphragm and EIC electromyogram (EMG) activities were recorded during baseline conditions and sustained tracheal occlusion for 30–40s. Despite substantial diaphragm weakness, mdx mice retain the capacity to enhance ventilation during hypercapnic hypoxia. Peak volume‐ and flow‐related measures were also maintained in anaesthetized, vagotomized mdx mice. Peak inspiratory pressure was remarkably well preserved during chemoactivated breathing, augmented breaths, and maximal sustained efforts during airway obstruction in mdx mice. Diaphragm and EIC EMG activities were lower during airway obstruction in mdx compared with wild‐type mice. We conclude that ventilatory capacity is preserved in young mdx mice. Despite profound respiratory muscle weakness and lower diaphragm and EIC EMG activities during high demand in mdx mice, peak inspiratory pressure is preserved, revealing adequate compensation in support of respiratory system performance, at least early in dystrophic disease. We suggest that a progressive loss of compensation during advancing disease, combined with diaphragm dysfunction, underpins the development of respiratory system morbidity in dystrophic diseases

    Chronic intermittent hypoxia impairs diuretic and natriuretic responses to volume expansion in rats with preserved low-pressure baroreflex control of the kidney

    We examined the effects of exposure to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) on baroreflex control of renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and renal excretory responses to volume expansion (VE) before and after intra-renal TRPV1 blockade by capsaizepine (CPZ). Male Wistar rats were exposed to 96 cycles of hypoxia per day for 14 days (CIH), or normoxia. Urine flow and absolute Na+ excretion during VE were less in CIH-exposed rats, but the progressive decrease in RSNA during VE was preserved. Assessment of the high-pressure baroreflex revealed an increase in the operating and response range of RSNA and decreased slope in CIH-exposed rats with substantial hypertension (+19mmHg basal mean arterial pressure, MAP), but not in a second cohort with modest hypertension (+12mmHg). Intra-renal CPZ caused diuresis, natriuresis and a reduction in MAP in sham and CIH-exposed rats. Following intra-renal CPZ, diuretic and natriuretic responses to VE in CIH-exposed rats were equivalent to sham. TPRV1 expression in the renal pelvic wall was similar in both experimental groups. Exposure to CIH did not elicit glomerular hypertrophy, renal inflammation or oxidative stress. We conclude that exposure to CIH: 1) does not impair the low-pressure baroreflex control of RSNA; 2) has modest effects on the high-pressure baroreflex control of RSNA, most likely indirectly due to hypertension; 3) can elicit hypertension in the absence of kidney injury; and 4) impairs diuretic and natriuretic responses to fluid overload. Our results suggest that exposure to CIH causes renal dysfunction, which may be relevant to obstructive sleep apnea

    H-ATLAS: a candidate high redshift cluster/protocluster of star-forming galaxies

    We investigate the region around the Planck-detected z=3.26 gravitationally lensed galaxy HATLAS J114637.9-001132 (hereinafter HATLAS12-00) using both archival Herschel data from the H-ATLAS survey and using submm data obtained with both LABOCA and SCUBA2. The lensed source is found to be surrounded by a strong overdensity of both Herschel-SPIRE sources and submm sources. We detect 17 bright (S870 >~7 mJy) sources at >4sigma closer than 5 arcmin to the lensed object at 850/870 microns. Ten of these sources have good cross-identifications with objects detected by Herschel-SPIRE which have redder colours than other sources in the field, with 350 micron flux > 250 micron flux, suggesting that they lie at high redshift. Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations localise one of these companions to ~1 arcsecond, allowing unambiguous cross identification with a 3.6 and 4.5 micron Spitzer source. The optical/near-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source is measured by further observations and found to be consistent with z>2, but incompatible with lower redshifts. We conclude that this system may be a galaxy cluster/protocluster or larger scale structure that contains a number of galaxies undergoing starbursts at the same time

    Mapping the cold dust temperatures and masses of nearby Kingfish galaxies with Herschel

    Taking advantage of the sensitivity and angular resolution of the Herschel Space Observatory at far-infrared and submm wavelengths, we aim to characterize the physical properties of cold dust within nearby galaxies and study the robustness of the parameters we derive using different modified blackbody models. For a pilot subsample of the KINGFISH program, we perform 2 temperature fits of the Spitzer and Herschel photometric data (24 to 500um), with a warm and a cold component, globally and in each resolution element.At global scales, we observe ranges of values for beta_c(0.8 to 2.5) and Tc(19.1 to 25.1K).We compute maps of our parameters with beta fixed or free to test the robustness of the temperature and dust surface density maps we deduce. When the emissivity is fixed, we observe temperature gradients as a function of radius.When the emissivity is fitted as a free parameter, barred galaxies tend to have uniform fitted emissivities.Gathering resolved elements in a Tc-beta_c diagram underlines an anti-correlation between the two parameters.It remains difficult to assess whether the dominant effect is the physics of dust grains, noise, or mixing along the line of sight and in the beam. We finally observe in both cases that the dust column density peaks in central regions of galaxies and bar ends (coinciding with molecular gas density enhancements usually found in these locations).We also quantify how the total dust mass varies with our assumptions about the emissivity index as well as the influence of the wavelength coverage used in the fits. We show that modified blackbody fits using a shallow emissivity (beta_c < 2.0) lead to significantly lower dust masses compared to the beta_c < 2.0 case, with dust masses lower by up to 50% if beta_c=1.5 for instance.The working resolution affects our total dust mass estimates: masses increase from global fits to spatially-resolved fits.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS, 2012 June 2
