    H.E.S.S. observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud

    The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way at a distance of approximately 48 kpc. Despite its distance it harbours several interesting targets for TeV gamma-ray observations. The composite supernova remnant N 157B/PSR J05367-6910 was discovered by H.E.S.S. being an emitter of very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays. It is the most distant pulsar wind nebula ever detected in VHE gamma-rays. Another very exciting target is SN 1987A, the remnant of the most recent supernova explosion that occurred in the neighbourhood of the Milky Way. Models for Cosmic Ray acceleration in this remnant predict gamma-ray emission at a level detectable by H.E.S.S. but this has not been detected so far. Fermi/LAT discovered diffuse high energy (HE) gamma-ray emission from the general direction of the massive star forming region 30 Doradus but no clear evidence for emission from either N 157B or SN 1987A has been published. The part of the LMC containing these objects has been observed regularly with the H.E.S.S. telescopes since 2003. With deep observations carried out in 2010 a very good exposure of this part of the sky has been obtained. The current status of the H.E.S.S.     Mechanisms of cognitive trust development in artificial intelligence among front line employees: An empirical examination from a developing economy

    Drawing upon insights from the trust literature, we conducted two empirical surveys with the front-line employees of firms in Pakistan investigating the factors influencing cognitive trust in artificial intelligence (AI). Study1 consisted of 46 in-depth interviews aimed at exploring factors influencing cognitive trust. Based on the findings of Study 1, we developed a framework to enhance employees’ cognitive trust in AI. We then conducted a quantitative survey (study 2) with 314 employees to validate the proposed model. The findings suggest that AI features positively influence the cognitive trust of employees, while work routine disruptions have negative impact on cognitive trust in AI. The effectiveness of data governance was also found to facilitate employees' trust in data governance and subsequently, employees' cognitive trust in AI. We contribute to the technology trust literature, especial in developing economics. We discuss the implications of our findings for both research and practice

    Increase in phenolic compounds of Coriandrum sativum L. after the application of a Bacillus halotolerans biofertilizer

    [EN]BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need for a new sustainable way of satisfying the increasing demand for food worldwide. One of the main challenges is replacing chemical fertilizers with biofertilizers, which include plant root-associated beneficial microorganisms. The present study reports, for the first time, the effects of SCCPVE07 bacterial strain with respect to improving not only plant development, but also the nutritional content and bioactive compounds content of Coriandrum sativum L., one of the most economically important crops, even for plant growth under salinity stress. RESULTS: Innoculated coriander plants (C. sativum L.) showed an increase in potassium, carbon, calcium and iron content. A significant improvement in phenolic compounds contents was also observed. The contents of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, cinnamic acid, 4-methoxy-cinnamic acid hexoside, K-3-O rutinoside, Q-3-O-rutinoside, Q-3-O-glucoside and Q-3-O-glucuronide were significantly enhanced. Moreover, an efficient bacterial root colonization and a noted growth promotion were demonstrated. Bacterial genome was sequenced and analysed. Gene coding related to Plant growth promotion (PGP) mechanisms and proteins involved in plant defence from salinity or in the metabolism of phenolic compounds, such as quercetin 2,3-dioxygenase and phenolic acid decarboxylase, were identified. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in the present study show, for the first time, the beneficial effects of the inoculation of a bacterial Bacillus halotolerans biofertilizer on coriander crops with respect to increasing the content in bioactive compounds and plant development

    Optimization of carbon and energy utilization through differential translational efficiency.

    Control of translation is vital to all species. Here we employ a multi-omics approach to decipher condition-dependent translational regulation in the model acetogen Clostridium ljungdahlii. Integration of data from cells grown autotrophically or heterotrophically revealed that pathways critical to carbon and energy metabolism are under strong translational regulation. Major pathways involved in carbon and energy metabolism are not only differentially transcribed and translated, but their translational efficiencies are differentially elevated in response to resource availability under different growth conditions. We show that translational efficiency is not static and that it changes dynamically in response to mRNA expression levels. mRNAs harboring optimized 5'-untranslated region and coding region features, have higher translational efficiencies and are significantly enriched in genes encoding carbon and energy metabolism. In contrast, mRNAs enriched in housekeeping functions harbor sub-optimal features and have lower translational efficiencies. We propose that regulation of translational efficiency is crucial for effectively controlling resource allocation in energy-deprived microorganisms

    Relative space-time asymmetries in pion and nucleon production in non-central nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies

    We propose to use the ratio of the pion-proton correlation functions evaluated under different conditions to study the relative space-time asymmetries in pion and proton emission (pion and nucleon source relative shifts) in high energy heavy ion collision. We address the question of the non-central collisions, where the sources can be shifted spatially both in the longitudinal and in the transverse directions in the reaction plane.     Combining ability analysis in Brassica juncea L. for oil quality traits

    This study was conducted in Brassica juncea L. for the determination of good combiners for quality associated traits using 8 x 8 diallel during 2004 - 2005 and 2005 - 2006. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences (p 0.01) for all the studied traits. Components of combining ability analysis showed that general combining ability (GCA) was highly significant (p 0.01) for oil percentage (%) and glucosinolates (ìMolg-1) whereas the rest were non-significant. Specific combining ability (SCA)effects were highly significant for all traits except for oleic acids. Reciprocal combining ability (RCA) effects were highly significant (p 0.01) for all traits except for oleic acid which was significant at (p 0.05). The SCA effects were higher than RCA for oil %. The GCA effects were of greater magnitude thanthe SCA effects for glucosinolate, erucic acid and protein content. The parental genotypes NUM009, NUM123, NUM105 and NUM117 and their hybrids NUM009x NUM123, NUM103x NUM105, NUM113x NUM124 and NUM103x NUM120 had high GCA and SCA effects, respectively and therefore these could be exploited for further selection of high yielding progenies. The overall study reveals the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic variability suggesting the use of integrated breeding strategies which can efficiently utilize the additive as well as non-additive genetic variability

    Comparison of cancer diagnostic intervals before and after implementation of NICE guidelines: analysis of data from the UK General Practice Research Database

Available from Nature Publishing Group via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: The primary aim was to use routine data to compare cancer diagnostic intervals before and after implementation of the 2005 NICE Referral Guidelines for Suspected Cancer. The secondary aim was to compare change in diagnostic intervals across different categories of presenting symptoms. METHODS: Using data from the General Practice Research Database, we analysed patients with one of 15 cancers diagnosed in either 2001-2002 or 2007-2008. Putative symptom lists for each cancer were classified into whether or not they qualified for urgent referral under NICE guidelines. Diagnostic interval (duration from first presented symptom to date of diagnosis in primary care records) was compared between the two cohorts. RESULTS: In total, 37,588 patients had a new diagnosis of cancer and of these 20,535 (54.6%) had a recorded symptom in the year prior to diagnosis and were included in the analysis. The overall mean diagnostic interval fell by 5.4 days (95% CI: 2.4-8.5; P<0.001) between 2001-2002 and 2007-2008. There was evidence of significant reductions for the following cancers: (mean, 95% confidence interval) kidney (20.4 days, -0.5 to 41.5; P=0.05), head and neck (21.2 days, 0.2-41.6; P=0.04), bladder (16.4 days, 6.6-26.5; P≀0.001), colorectal (9.0 days, 3.2-14.8; P=0.002), oesophageal (13.1 days, 3.0-24.1; P=0.006) and pancreatic (12.6 days, 0.2-24.6; P=0.04). Patients who presented with NICE-qualifying symptoms had shorter diagnostic intervals than those who did not (all cancers in both cohorts). For the 2007-2008 cohort, the cancers with the shortest median diagnostic intervals were breast (26 days) and testicular (44 days); the highest were myeloma (156 days) and lung (112 days). The values for the 90th centiles of the distributions remain very high for some cancers. Tests of interaction provided little evidence of differences in change in mean diagnostic intervals between those who did and did not present with symptoms specifically cited in the NICE Guideline as requiring urgent referral. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the implementation of the 2005 NICE Guidelines may have contributed to this reduction in diagnostic intervals between 2001-2002 and 2007-2008.     Location‐based social network’s data analysis and spatio‐temporal modeling for the mega city of Shanghai, China

The aim of the current study is to analyze and extract the useful patterns from Location-Based Social Network (LBSN) data in Shanghai, China, using different temporal and spatial analysis techniques, along with specific check-in venue categories. This article explores the applications of LBSN data by examining the association between time, frequency of check-ins, and venue classes, based on users’ check-in behavior and the city’s characteristics. The information regarding venue classes is created and categorized by using the nature of physical locations. We acquired the geo-location information from one of the most famous Chinese microblogs called Sina-Weibo (Weibo). The extracted data are translated into the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) format, and after analysis the results are presented in the form of statistical graphs, tables, and spatial heatmaps. SPSS is used for temporal analysis, and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) is applied based on users’ check-ins with the help of ArcMap and OpenStreetMap for spatial analysis. The findings show various patterns, including more frequent use of LBSN while visiting entertainment and shopping locations, a substantial number of check-ins from educational institutions, and that the density extends to suburban areas mainly because of educational institutions and residential areas. Through analytical results, the usage patterns based on hours of the day, days of the week, and for an entire six months, including by gender, venue category, and frequency distribution of the classes, as well as check-in density all over Shanghai city, are thoroughly demonstrated
