Joint toxicity of cadmium and ionizing radiation on zooplankton carbon incorporation, growth and mobility

The risk of exposure to radioactive elements is seldom assessed considering mixture toxicity, potentially over- or underestimating biological and ecological effects on ecosystems. This study investigated how three end points, carbon transfer between phytoplankton and Daphnia magna, D. magna mobility and growth, responded to exposure to γ-radiation in combination with the heavy metal cadmium (Cd), using the MIXTOX approach. Observed effects were compared with mixture effects predicted by concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) models and with deviations for synergistic/antagonistic (S/A), dose-level (DL), and dose-ratio (DR) dependency interactions. Several patterns of response were observed depending on the end point tested. DL-dependent deviation from the IA model was observed for carbon incorporation with antagonism switching to synergism at higher doses, while the CA model indicated synergism, mainly driven by effects at high doses of γ-radiation. CA detected antagonism regarding acute immobilization, while IA predicted DR-dependency. Both CA and IA also identified antagonism for daphnid growth. In general, effects of combinations of γ-radiation and Cd seem to be antagonistic at lower doses, but synergistic at the higher range of the doses tested. Our results highlight the importance of investigating the effects of exposure to γ-radiation in a multistressor context

The paper traces the origins and importance of the present book as part of the researches carried out in Nora since 1990 by the Universities of Padova, Genova, Viterbo and Milano. After conducting for several years studies and excavations focused on urban ancient buildings and on landscape settlements, with this book the academic team aims to start the rediscovery of unpublished documents reserved in the Archives and particulary rich of informations. We have taken in account the reports written by a group of french researchers, led by M. Cassien and operating in Nora between 1978 and 1984. These long reports present the result of an intensive underwater surveys carried out around the peninsula of Nora. The documents are published in facsimile and translation form; various studies and reviews, concernig the activities and the findings, are also presented

An investigation was carried out to characterize top soils collected in a prototypical urban area impacted by industrial and agricultural activities. Soils of the studied zone receive also the contribution of traffic from the urban area, marine aerosols from the Atlantic Ocean and dust from the Patagonian steppe. Top soil samples were sampled and then sieved in two fractions (F1 < 37 μm, and 37 < F2 < 50 μm) for subsequent digestion using an acid mixture containing HCl, HNO3 and HF (6:2:1). Elemental determination of Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Ti, V and Zn was carried out by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and/or inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Accuracy tests for the entire analytical procedure were performed by means of the certified reference material NIST SRM 2711 Montana soil. Limit of detection reached varied from 0.08 μg g− 1 (Cd) to 2.4 μg g− 1 (Ba). Elemental concentrations ranged from 0.10 ± 0.01 μg g− 1 (Mo) to 14.6 ± 0.6% (Ca). Aluminum, Ca, Fe, Mg and Ti (geological elements) were found at concentrations in the percentage order. The ratios of elemental concentrations Mo/Ca, Ni/Ca and Ti/Ca were identified as chemical markers suitable for distinguishing the different soil samples by exposing the relative differences in the 4-element chemical profile. The concentrations of metals and metalloids in size-fractionated top soils reported in this study will be an important tool for future studies aimed to characterize soil resuspension and its contribution to airborne particulate matter.Fil: Morales del Mastro, Anabella Mabel. Le ricognizioni subacquee di Michel Cassien: tecniche di immersione e metodologia di scavo

Differently trained Italian and French divers gave the backbone of the work of M. Cassien between 1978 and 1984 in the waters of the peninsula of Nora. Besides giving an explanation of the vessels, logistics operations and equipment used by the team, the article’s aim is to quantify the duration, depths and number of the dives. The subsequent chapters are analyzing the techniques, tools and methods of the underwater project, following the chronological order of the work: the underwater survey, the identification of areas rich in archeological deposit, the underwater documentation of the findings and the recovery of the artifacts, and last, but not least the excavation itself which was carried out in 1981 and 1984
