    Alkali poisoning of Fe-Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

    [EN] Fe (2 wt%)-Cu (1.5 wt%)-ZSM-5 SCR catalyst contacted 1.5 wt% of Na and 1.8 wt% of K in order to simulate poisoning by species more specifically contained in exhaust gases from exhaust gases of diesel engines and power plants. Poisoning agents do not cause loss of surface area nor pore occlusion. XRD and SEM results showed that alkali metals introduction did not deteriorate the crystallinity and morphology of zeolite crystals. However, a significant loss of surface acidity was observed upon alkali-poisoned catalysts causing a dramatic deactivation of the NH3-SCR of NO reaction.     There's an App for That:Development of an Application to Operationalize the Global Diet Quality Score

    BACKGROUND: The global diet quality score (GDQS) is a simple, standardized metric appropriate for population-based measurement of diet quality globally.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to operationalize data collection by modifying the quantity of consumption cutoffs originally developed for the GDQS food groups and to statistically evaluate the performance of the operationalized GDQS relative to the original GDQS against nutrient adequacy and noncommunicable disease (NCD)-related outcomes.METHODS: The GDQS application uses a 24-h open-recall to collect a full list of all foods consumed during the previous day or night, and automatically classifies them into corresponding GDQS food group. Respondents use a set of 10 cubes in a range of predetermined sizes to determine if the quantity consumed per GDQS food group was below, or equal to or above food group-specific cutoffs established in grams. Because there is only a total of 10 cubes but as many as 54 cutoffs for the GDQS food groups, the operationalized cutoffs differ slightly from the original GDQS cutoffs.RESULTS: A secondary analysis using 5 cross-sectional datasets comparing the GDQS with the original and operationalized cutoffs showed that the operationalized GDQS remained strongly correlated with nutrient adequacy and was equally sensitive to anthropometric and other clinical measures of NCD risk. In a secondary analysis of a longitudinal cohort study of Mexican teachers, there were no differences between the 2 modalities with the beta coefficients per 1 SD change in the original and operationalized GDQS scores being nearly identical for weight gain (-0.37 and -0.36, respectively, P &lt; 0.001 for linear trend for both models) and of the same clinical order of magnitude for waist circumference (-0.52 and -0.44, respectively, P &lt; 0.001 for linear trend for both models).CONCLUSION: The operationalized GDQS cutoffs did not change the performance of the GDQS and therefore are recommended for use to collect GDQS data in the future.</p

    Therapeutic Down-Modulators of Staphylococcal Superantigen-Induced Inflammation and Toxic Shock

    Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) and related superantigenic toxins are potent stimulators of the immune system and cause a variety of diseases in humans, ranging from food poisoning to toxic shock. These toxins bind directly to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells and specific Vβ regions of T-cell receptors (TCR), resulting in hyperactivation of both monocytes/macrophages and T lymphocytes. Activated host cells produce massive amounts of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, activating inflammation and coagulation, causing clinical symptoms that include fever, hypotension, and shock. This review summarizes the in vitro and in vivo effects of staphylococcal superantigens, the role of pivotal mediators induced by these toxins in the pathogenic mechanisms of tissue injury, and the therapeutic agents to mitigate the toxic effects of superantigens

    Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use in early acute respiratory distress syndrome : Insights from the LUNG SAFE study

Copyright: Copyright 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Background: Concerns exist regarding the prevalence and impact of unnecessary oxygen use in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We examined this issue in patients with ARDS enrolled in the Large observational study to UNderstand the Global impact of Severe Acute respiratory FailurE (LUNG SAFE) study. Methods: In this secondary analysis of the LUNG SAFE study, we wished to determine the prevalence and the outcomes associated with hyperoxemia on day 1, sustained hyperoxemia, and excessive oxygen use in patients with early ARDS. Patients who fulfilled criteria of ARDS on day 1 and day 2 of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure were categorized based on the presence of hyperoxemia (PaO2 > 100 mmHg) on day 1, sustained (i.e., present on day 1 and day 2) hyperoxemia, or excessive oxygen use (FIO2 ≥ 0.60 during hyperoxemia). Results: Of 2005 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 131 (6.5%) were hypoxemic (PaO2 < 55 mmHg), 607 (30%) had hyperoxemia on day 1, and 250 (12%) had sustained hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use occurred in 400 (66%) out of 607 patients with hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use decreased from day 1 to day 2 of ARDS, with most hyperoxemic patients on day 2 receiving relatively low FIO2. Multivariate analyses found no independent relationship between day 1 hyperoxemia, sustained hyperoxemia, or excess FIO2 use and adverse clinical outcomes. Mortality was 42% in patients with excess FIO2 use, compared to 39% in a propensity-matched sample of normoxemic (PaO2 55-100 mmHg) patients (P = 0.47). Conclusions: Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use are both prevalent in early ARDS but are most often non-sustained. No relationship was found between hyperoxemia or excessive oxygen use and patient outcome in this cohort.     Symposium “Completing the Data Pipeline: Collections Data Use in Research, Education and Outreach. The conference theme, Collections and Data in an Uncertain World, turns the spotlight on a number of opportunities that can advance the experience of undergraduate biology education. Today, millions of records from Natural History Collections worldwide are available to students and educators through portals such as iDigBio, https://www.idigbio.org/portal/search.  These records facilitate explorations for disciplinary and interdisciplinary understanding of a changing and uncertain biodiversity landscape across space and time. Biological and paleontological specimens data can be combined with ecological or geological data to investigate large scale questions related to climate change, invasive species or resource management.  This session highlights resources and initiatives of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) for undergraduate students and faculty that focus on emerging developments in core competencies, careers and diversity. For too long, undergraduate biology/ecology education has centered primarily round mastery of disciplinary content often involving rote learning. The Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education conference organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2009 identified a set of core competencies that include understanding of the nature of science, communication, collaboration, and quantitative skills. These skills, and the fluency across disciplines such as ecology, environmental science, evolutionary biology and systematics are the hallmarks of the 21st century biologist.  www.visionandchange.org ESA has long advocated active learning in the classroom. In 2006, ESA education leaders launched, Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology (TIEE), an education journal designed to promote inquiry, scientific thinking, collaborative work, formative evaluation, and alternative assessment in the college classroom. Today, the LifeDiscoveryEd Digital Library (LDDL),  www.lifediscoveryed.org, built on the metadata architecture of ESA’s EcoEd Digital Library established in 2006, serves three disciplinary society communities including ESA, Botanical Society of America (BSA) and Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE), encouraging cross-dissemination of resources. Together, the three societies form the LifeDiscovery partners and co-organize the Life Discovery – Doing Science Biology Education conference (LDC) every 18 months, www.esa.org/ldc. A unique feature of the LDC is the Education Share Fair where participants may present teaching ideas at any stage of development to solicit feedback from their peers. In a response to a need for a more robust approach to advancing data literacy, ESA joined with the Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis (QUBES) project, to offer a series of Faculty Mentoring Networks (FMN) launched in 2016, https://qubeshub.org, http://esa.org/fed/fmn/. Additionally, ESA is a pioneer in undergraduate diversity mentoring through the Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability (SEEDS) program, www.esa.org/seeds which has a campus chapter network in 100 campuses developed since 1996. In 2016, ESA became involved in the 3dnaturalists project, led by Colorado State University, that seeks to understand how bioblitzes might make a difference in recruiting and retaining underrepresented minorities in ecology and sustainability sciences. In 2017, ESA joined the Core Team of the Biodiversity Literacy in Undergraduate Education (BLUE) network project to liaise with relevant scientific and professional societies and to provide input on engaging diverse participants in the project This session will discuss: how ESA’s education initiatives can be leveraged for faculty professional development in the Biodiversity Literacy in Undergraduate Education (BLUE) project. the ways that engaging students in biodiversity data in ecology research will open the doors to building key biological science competencies and 21st century careers the potential of using place-based specimen data through bioblitzes to engage minority students in a culturally responsive scientific endeavor

    On the performance of Fe-Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3: the influence of preparation method

    [EN] The selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia (NH3-SCR) in the presence of H2O was studied over a series of Fe-Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts prepared by solid-state ion exchange (SSIE), aqueous ion exchange and impregnation methods. The prepared samples were characterized by various techniques (ICP-AES, N-2 physisorption at 77K, XRD, STEM-EDX, XPS, H-2-TPR and DRS UV-vis) to investigate the effect of the preparation method on the activity, texture, structure and metal speciation of the studied catalysts. It was found that the aqueous ion exchange method induced a significant metal loss during the preparation procedure but without any activity deterioration of the catalyst which encloses highly dispersed metal species. The catalysts prepared by SSIE and impregnation showed the highest metal contents and a large number of oxide aggregates leading to an activity decline at high reaction temperatures due to the ammonia oxidation phenomenon.Financial support by the MINECO of Spain through the Severo Ochoa (SEV-2016-0683) and CTQ2015-68951C3-1-R projects is gratefully acknowledged.
