Spanish validation of the revised depression attitude questionnaire (R-daq)
Purpose: The aim of the study was to develop and validate a Spanish version of the Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire (R-DAQ). Methods: The R-DAQ was used as a baseline for the study. It was translated and tested to ensure the instrument was appropriate for the target population. 537 Ecuadorian healthcare professionals completed the revised Spanish version of the R-DAQ (SR-DAQ). Statistical and exploratory factor analyses were performed to examine construct validity, internal consistency, readability and floor and ceiling effects. Results: Three factors were obtained: “Professional confidence in depression care”; “Therapeutic optimism about depression”; and “Generalist perspective about depression occurrence, recognition, and management”. The internal consistency of the SR-DAQ was determined by means of Cronbach’s α coefficient, with values ranging between 0.61–0.8. The correlations with the English version reflected adequate validity. The model explained 39% of the variance. Subsequent analysis with a sample restricted to those who had received training in depression produced a model that explained 42% of the variance. Conclusion: The SR-DAQ meets the psychometric requirements for measuring depression attitude in a Spanish-speaking population and shows adequate internal consistency and validity
Riding the wake of a merging galaxy cluster
Using WHT OASIS integral field unit observations, we report the discovery of
a thin plume of ionised gas extending from the brightest cluster galaxy in
Abell 2146 to the sub-cluster X-ray cool core which is offset from the BCG by
~37 kpc. The plume is greater than 15 kpc long and less than 3 kpc wide. This
plume is unique in that the cluster it is situated in is currently undergoing a
major galaxy cluster merger. The brightest cluster galaxy is unusually located
behind the X-ray shock front and in the wake of the ram pressure stripped X-ray
cool core and evidence for recent disruption to the BCG is observed. We examine
the gas and stellar morphology, the gas kinematics of the BCG and their
relation to the X-ray gas. We propose that a causal link between the ionised
gas plume and the offset X-ray cool core provides the simplest explanation for
the formation of the plume. An interaction or merger between the BCG and
another cluster galaxy is probably the cause of the offset.Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Multiagent cooperation for solving global optimization problems: an extendible framework with example cooperation strategies
This paper proposes the use of multiagent cooperation for solving global optimization problems through the introduction of a new multiagent environment, MANGO. The strength of the environment lays in itsflexible structure based on communicating software agents that attempt to solve a problem cooperatively. This structure allows the execution of a wide range of global optimization algorithms described as a set of interacting operations. At one extreme, MANGO welcomes an individual non-cooperating agent, which is basically the traditional way of solving a global optimization problem. At the other extreme, autonomous agents existing in the environment cooperate as they see fit during run time. We explain the development and communication tools provided in the environment as well as examples of agent realizations and cooperation scenarios. We also show how the multiagent structure is more effective than having a single nonlinear optimization algorithm with randomly selected initial points
A variational method based on weighted graph states
In a recent article [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 (2006), 107206], we have presented a
class of states which is suitable as a variational set to find ground states in
spin systems of arbitrary spatial dimension and with long-range entanglement.
Here, we continue the exposition of our technique, extend from spin 1/2 to
higher spins and use the boson Hubbard model as a non-trivial example to

PROFIT: a new alternative for emission-line PROfile FITting
I briefly describe a simple routine for emission-line profiles fitting by
Gaussian curves or Gauss-Hermite series. The PROFIT (line-PROfile FITting)
routine represent a new alternative for use in fits data cubes, as those from
Integral Field Spectroscopy or Fabry-Perot Interferometry, and may be useful to
better study the emission-line flux distributions and gas kinematics in
distinct astrophysical objects, such as the central regions of galaxies and
star forming regions. The PROFIT routine is written in IDL language and is
available at http://www.ufsm.br/rogemar/software.html.
The PROFIT routine was used to fit the [Fe II]1.257um emission-line profiles
for about 1800 spectra of the inner 350 pc of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk1066
obtained with Gemini NIFS and shows that the line profiles are better
reproduced by Gauss-Hermite series than by the commonly used Gaussian curves.
The two-dimensional map of the h_3 Gauss-Hermite moment shows its highest
absolute values in regions close to the edge of the radio structure. These high
values may be originated in an biconical outflowing gas associated with the
radio jet - previously observed in the optical [O III] emission. The analysis
of this kinematic component indicates that the radio jet leaves the center of
the galaxy with the north-west side slightly oriented towards us and the
south-east side away from us, being partially hidden by the disc of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication Astrophysics & Space Science - 7 pges; 4

The VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey: Evolution in the Halo Occupation Number since z 1
We model the evolution of the mean galaxy occupation of dark-matter halos
over the range , using the data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey
(VVDS). The galaxy projected correlation function was computed for a
set of luminosity-limited subsamples and fits to its shape were obtained using
two variants of Halo Occupation Distribution models. These provide us with a
set of best-fitting parameters, from which we obtain the average mass of a halo
and average number of galaxies per halo. We find that after accounting for the
evolution in luminosity and assuming that we are largely following the same
population, the underlying dark matter halo shows a growth in mass with
decreasing redshift as expected in a hierarchical structure formation scenario.
Using two different HOD models, we see that the halo mass grows by 90% over the
redshift interval z=[0.5,1.0]. This is the first time the evolution in halo
mass at high redshifts has been obtained from a single data survey and it
follows the simple form seen in N-body simulations with , and . This provides evidence for a rapid accretion
phase of massive halos having a present-day mass , with a merger event occuring between redshifts of 0.5
and 1.0. Futhermore, we find that more luminous galaxies are found to occupy
more massive halos irrespectively of the redshift. Finally, the average number
of galaxies per halo shows little increase from redshift z 1.0 to z
0.5, with a sharp increase by a factor 3 from z 0.5 to z 0.1,
likely due to the dynamical friction of subhalos within their host halos.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. MNRAS accepted
HIF-1 activation induces doxorubicin resistance in MCF7 3-D spheroids via P-glycoprotein expression: a potential model of the chemo-resistance of invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast
BACKGROUND: Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) of the breast is a distinct and aggressive variant of luminal type B breast cancer that does not respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. It is characterized by small pseudopapillary clusters of cancer cells with inverted cell polarity. To investigate whether hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) activation may be related to the drug resistance described in this tumor, we used MCF7 cancer cells cultured as 3-D spheroids, which morphologically simulate IMPC cell clusters. METHODS: HIF-1 activation was measured by EMSA and ELISA in MCF7 3-D spheroids and MCF7 monolayers. Binding of HIF-1α to MDR-1 gene promoter and modulation of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) expression was evaluated by ChIP assay and FACS analysis, respectively. Intracellular doxorubicin retention was measured by spectrofluorimetric assay and drug cytotoxicity by annexin V-FITC measurement and caspase activity assay. RESULTS: In MCF7 3-D spheroids HIF-1 was activated and recruited to participate to the transcriptional activity of MDR-1 gene, coding for Pgp. In addition, Pgp expression on the surface of cells obtained from 3-D spheroids was increased. MCF7 3-D spheroids accumulate less doxorubicin and are less sensitive to its cytotoxic effects than MCF7 cells cultured as monolayer. Finally, HIF-1α inhibition either by incubating cells with 3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzylindazole (a widely used HIF-1α inhibitor) or by transfecting cells with specific siRNA for HIF-1α significantly decreased the expression of Pgp on the surface of cells and increased the intracellular doxorubicin accumulation in MCF7 3-D spheroids. CONCLUSIONS: MCF7 breast cancer cells cultured as 3-D spheroids are resistant to doxorubicin and this resistance is associated with an increased Pgp expression in the plasma membrane via activation of HIF-1. The same mechanism may be suggested for IMPC drug resistance
Globally convergent evolution strategies for constrained optimization
International audienceIn this paper we propose, analyze, and test algorithms for constrained optimization when no use of derivatives of the objective function is made. The proposed methodology is built upon the globally convergent evolution strategies previously introduced by the authors for unconstrained optimization. Two approaches are encompassed to handle the constraints. In a first approach, feasibility is first enforced by a barrier function and the objective function is then evaluated directly at the feasible generated points. A second approach projects first all the generated points onto the feasible domain before evaluating the objective function.The resulting algorithms enjoy favorable global convergence properties (convergence to stationarity from arbitrary starting points), regardless of the linearity of the constraints.The algorithmic implementation (i) includes a step where previously evaluated points are used to accelerate the search (by minimizing quadratic models) and (ii) addresses the particular cases of bounds on the variables and linear constraints. Our solver is compared to others, and the numerical results confirm its competitiveness in terms of efficiency and robustness
