Turismo natureza e aventura no Geoparque Porto Santo: contributos para o desenvolvimento turístico sustentável

Pretende-se com esta dissertação, desenvolver uma proposta de actividades destinadas à prática de turismo na natureza, com o intuito de criar um produto turístico inovador, na ilha do Porto Santo, cujo objectivo é vir a fazer parte integrante das ofertas turísticas da ilha, como um produto de diferenciação e excelência. A oferta turística do Porto Santo tem estado centrada no produto sol e praia mas o território apresenta elevado potencial para o desenvolvimento de outros produtos, particularmente o turismo na natureza, que pode levar ao sucesso e rentabilidade de um conjunto de actividades de desporto na natureza e aventura com uma vertente de animação e experiências. O estudo realizado foi desenvolvido tendo por base um cenário hipotético de desenvolvimento no contexto do geoparque do Porto Santo, abordado como uma estratégia de turismo integradora e de excelência, numa perspectiva de valorização do património natural, no contexto de percursos de geoturismo e actividades de desporto na natureza e aventura. Apresentam-se os principais argumentos que possam ser invocados no sentido de: motivar na procura por um turismo de qualidade; levar à reflexão sobre a importância do contacto com a natureza bem como a sua protecção; enriquecer e impulsionar o desenvolvimento sustentável da actividade turística do Porto Santo, com actividades de exploração na natureza e a sua interligação com o turismo cultural integrando a população e o território num sentido de valorizar esta região insular.The present thesis falls under the Master in Tourism, specialization in Planning and Management of Nature and Adventure Tourism. The intention of this thesis is to develop a proposal for activities in nature tourism, an innovative tourism product on the island of Porto Santo, aimed to become part of the island's tourism proposals, as a product of differentiation and excellence. Porto Santo in terms of nature tourism has still and enormous potential for activities and adventure sports in nature with a focus on entertainment and experiences. The study was developed based on a hypothetical scenario of development in the context of the geopark of Porto Santo, approached as an integrated tourism strategy and excellence, with sustainability and enhancement of its natural heritage in the context of geotourism pathways and sports activities in nature and adventure. The proposed activities are described and the main arguments that can be invoked in order to: motivate the search for a quality tourism; lead to a reflection on the importance of contact with nature and its protection (eco and natural heritage friendly); enrich and boost sustainable development of tourism in Porto Santo, with exploratory activities in nature, and its interconnection with cultural tourism integrating population and territory in order to value this island region, in the context of the Autonomic Region of Madeira

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
