    Self-triggered sampling selection based on quadratic programming

    This paper proposes a model-based control strategy for networked control systems subject to norm bounded disturbances. The communication channel is supposed to be shared with several processes and, therefore, the access to the network needs to be minimized to avoid collisions and packet losses. We propose to use a variable sample rate scheme in which the controller operates in open-loop between successive state measurements. The sampling time is decided on-line solving a sequence of quadratic optimization problems in order to minimize the access to the common network while guaranteeing closed-loop practical stability. Both discrete and continuous time schemes are considered

    Are owl pellets good estimators of prey abundance?

    Some ecologists have been skeptics about the use of owl pellets to estimate small mammal's fauna. This is due to the assumptions required by this method: (a) that owls hunt at random, and (b) that pellets represent a random sample from the environment. We performed statistical analysis to test these assumptions and to assess the effectiveness of Barn owl pellets as a useful estimator of field abundances of its preys. We used samples collected in the arid Extra-Andean Patagonia along an altitudinal environmental gradient from lower Monte ecoregion to upper Patagonian steppe ecoregion, with a mid-elevation ecotone. To test if owls hunt at random, we estimated expected pellet frequency by creating a distribution of random pellets, which we compared with data using a simulated chi-square. To test if pellets represent a random sample from the environment, differences between ecoregions were evaluated by PERMANOVAs with Bray–Curtis dissimilarities. We did not find evidence that owls foraged non-randomly. Therefore, we can assume that the proportions of the small mammal's species in the diet are representative of the proportions of the species in their communities. Only Monte is different from other ecoregions. The ecotone samples are grouped with those of Patagonian steppes. There are no real differences between localities in the small mammal's abundances in each of these ecoregions and/or Barn owl pellets cannot detect patterns at a smaller spatial scale.     Influence of the microbiome on radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis and its management: A comprehensive review

    Radiation-induced mucositis is the most common, debilitating and painful acute toxicity associated with active treatment in head and neck cancer area, severely affecting more than 65% of patients. Oral microbiota significantly changes during cancer therapy and appears to be involved on its pathophysiology. This review aims to present a comprehensive update of new etiopathogenic factors and treatments that may decrease the incidence of mucositis, mainly modifications of dietary interventions to modify microbiome. Despite advances in recent years, its management is mainly symptomatic opioid-based with variable results on different substances analyzed for its prevention. Immunonutrition seems to play a significant role, particularly the supplementation of compounds such as fatty acids, polyphenols or selected probiotics have shown to promote commensal bacteria diversity and reduced incidence of ulcerative mucositis. Modification of the microbiome is a promising preventive treatment for mucositis although its evidence is still scarce. Large studies are needed to demonstrate the efficacy of interventions on microbiome and its clinical impact on radiation-induced mucositis.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBUA

    SEGUNDA CAMPAÑA DE EXCAVACIONES (1983) EN EL POBLADO DE LA EDAD DEL COBRE DE "EL MALAGÓN" (CÚLLAR-BAZA, GRANADA)

    La segunda campaña de excavación en el poblado de la Edad del Cobre de "El Malagón" (Cúllar-Baza, Granada) se ha realizado del 13 de junio al 15 de agosto de 1983, en cuanto a trabajos de excavación propiamente dichos, prolongándose con diversos trabajos de documentación hasta el 3 de septiembre, bajo la dirección de los profesores del Departamentode Prehistoria de Granada, Dres. D. Fernando Molina González y D. Francisco de la Torre Peña, siendo los responsables en las distintas áreas de excavación: D. Francisco Carrión Méndez y D. Francisco Contreras Cortés (profesores del mismo Departamento), D. Inocente Blanco de la Rubia, Da. Mª. Auxiliadora Moreno Onorato, D. Antonio Ramos Millán y Da. María del Pino de la Torre Santana (todos ellos Licenciados en Filosofía y Letras Opción Antigüedad, por la Universidad de Granada); D: José A. González Alcantud colaboró en los trabajos durante la primera semana de la campaña, trasladándose posteriormente a la excavación de urgencia que otro equipo realizaba simultáneamente en el cercano yacimiento argárico de "Castellón Alto", en Galera. Al margen de los citados, hay que reseñarla intervención en la campaña de Da. Inmaculada Rus (Universidad Complutense) y D. Roberto Santamaría (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)

    A chromosome-level genome assembly enables the identification of the follicule stimulating hormone receptor as the master sex determining gene in the flatfish Solea senegalensis

    Sex determination (SD) shows huge variation among fish and a high evolutionary rate, as illustrated by the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes). This order is characterized by its adaptation to demersal life, compact genomes and diversity of SD mechanisms. Here, we assembled the Solea senegalensis genome, a flatfish of great commercial value, into 82 contigs (614 Mb) combining long- and short-read sequencing, which were next scaffolded using a highly dense genetic map (28,838 markers, 21 linkage groups), representing 98.9% of the assembly. Further, we established the correspondence between the assembly and the 21 chromosomes by using BAC-FISH. Whole genome resequencing of six males and six females enabled the identification of 41 SNP variants in the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (fshr) consistent with an XX / XY SD system. The observed sex association was validated in a broader independent sample, providing a novel molecular sexing tool. Fshr displayed differential gene expression between male and female gonads from 86 days post-fertilization, when the gonad is still an undifferentiated primordium, concomitant with the activation of amh and cyp19a1a, testis and ovary marker genes, respectively, in males and females. The Y-linked fshr allele, which included 24 non-synonymous variants and showed a highly divergent 3D protein structure, was overexpressed in males compared to the X-linked allele at all stages of gonadal differentiation.     The Use of Corticosteroids or Tocilizumab in COVID-19 Based on Inflammatory Markers

    SEMI-COVID-19 Network.[Background] The inflammatory cascade is the main cause of death in COVID-19 patients. Corticosteroids (CS) and tocilizumab (TCZ) are available to treat this escalation but which patients to administer it remains undefined.[Objective] We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of immunosuppressive/anti-inflammatory therapy in COVID-19, based on the degree of inflammation. .[Design] A retrospective cohort study with data on patients collected and followed up from March 1st, 2020, to May 1st, 2021, from the nationwide Spanish SEMI-COVID-19 Registry. Patients under treatment with CS vs. those under CS plus TCZ were compared. Effectiveness was explored in 3 risk categories (low, intermediate, high) based on lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin, and d-dimer values.[Patients] A total of 21,962 patients were included in the Registry by May 2021. Of these, 5940 met the inclusion criteria for the present study (5332 were treated with CS and 608 with CS plus TCZ).[Main Measures] The primary outcome of the study was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes were the composite variable of in-hospital mortality, requirement for high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV), invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), or intensive care unit (ICU) admission.[Key Results] A total of 5940 met the inclusion criteria for the present study (5332 were treated with CS and 608 with CS plus TCZ). No significant differences were observed in either the low/intermediate-risk category (1.5% vs. 7.4%, p=0.175) or the high-risk category (23.1% vs. 20%, p=0.223) after propensity score matching. A statistically significant lower mortality was observed in the very high–risk category (31.9% vs. 23.9%, p=0.049).[Conclusions] The prescription of CS alone or in combination with TCZ should be based on the degrees of inflammation and reserve the CS plus TCZ combination for patients at high and especially very high risk.Peer reviewe
