In this paper, we study a Mesoamerican codex, that we call Pintura del Pleito entre Tepexpan y Temaxcalapa. This document is in the Archivo General de Indias (Sevilla). It was part of a dossier (Leg. Justicia, 164, nº 2). Now it's independent (MP México, 664). We do the codicological analysis, to date the document and to determinate how many authors participated. Also we do a brief description of its content, as well of the Libro Indígena a of the Libro Escrito Europeo

Among the documents written by fray Bernardino de Sahagún, the Codices Matritenses are one of the most important sources, because they are considered as the oldest version of the Historia General de las Cosas de la Nueva España; for this reason they have received further attention from researchers interested in both the work of Sahagún as the Mesoamerican codices. This paper shows that these manuscripts have not yet been analyzed completely satisfactory, especially under the perspective of codicology, from which we intend to undertake in-depth study of the Codices Matritenses, and content. We focus now on only one of the two manuscripts included under this description: the Manuscrito de la Biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia

Los códices Techialoyan y su censo: problemática sobre su número actual

    Get PDF
In this article, it is proposed a brief revision of the number of Techialoyan codices. To do this, the text starts with a definition of the corpus, that it is composed of manuscripts done between the half of the 17th century and beginning of the next. Around these documents there are many doubts and it remains much to do. In this case, we present a review around the lists and catalogues to see the changes of the group through time. Our conclusion is that is necessary recount the corpus, because there are fragmented documents and others are unknowns or copies. Finally, we show our count, that leaves the number less than fifty-six documents catalogued until today.

Abertay is a relatively small, modern university (undergraduate population of around 4000) with a wide portfolio and a diverse student population. Around 35% of our students are direct entry from local partner colleges to years 2 and 3 of our programmes and a significant number are first generation higher education within their families. As such, partnership working with colleges and support to aid student transitions are key aspects of Abertay’s provision. Since 2013/14, the university has developed and implemented a new Teaching and Learning Enhancement strategy that has catalysed wholescale transformation across the institution. This paper provides an overview of technology enhanced learning at the university with the drivers for change being to the quality of our students' learning experience, improve student retention and progression and enhance learners’ engagement

Area-Efficient Linear Regression Architecture for Real-Time Signal Processing on FPGAs

    Get PDF
Linear regression is a technique widely used in digital signal processing. It consists on finding the linear function that better fits a given set of samples. This paper proposes different hardware architectures for the implementation of the linear regression method on FPGAs, specially targeting area restrictive systems. It saves area at the cost of constraining the lengths of the input signal to some fixed values. We have implemented the proposed scheme in an Automatic Modulation Classifier, meeting the hard real-time constraints this kind of systems have

Expression of the Escherichia coli ompW colicin S4 receptor gene is regulated by temperature and modulated by the H-NS and StpA nucleoid-associated proteins

    Get PDF
The OmpW family consists of a ubiquitous group of small outer membrane (OM) β-barrel proteins of Gram-negative bacteria with proposed roles in environmental adaptation but poorly understood mechanisms of expression. We report here that Escherichia coli K-12 OmpW contents are drastically modified by temperature changes compatible with the leap from the environment to warm-blooded hosts and/or vice versa. Thus, while OmpW is present in the OM of bacteria grown at 37 °C, it sharply disappears at 23 °C with the concomitant acquisition of colicin S4 resistance by the cells. ompW::lacZY fusions indicated that temperature regulation operates at the level of transcription, being ompW expression almost abolished at 23 °C as compared to 37 °C. Moreover, E. coli Δhns mutants lacking H-NS showed reductions in ompW transcription and OmpW contents at 37 °C, indicating positive modulatory roles for this nucleoid-structuring protein in ompW expression. Also, ΔhnsΔstpA double mutants simultaneously lacking H-NS and its paralog StpA showed more severe reductions in ompW expression at 37 °C, resulting in the complete loss of OmpW. The overall results indicate that OmpW contents in E. coli are regulated by both temperature and H-NS and reinforce OmpW functions in bacterial adaptation to warm-blooded hostsFil: Brambilla, Luciano. The influence of website design, culture and language on perceived web usability, satisfaction and perceived risk online

The current markets globalization as a result of ICT development in general and the Internet in particular, have enhanced the importance of the websites design, which is a powerful communications medium for companies operating in international markets (Turban and Gehrek, 2000). The website of the company represents its image in the Internet as an intermediary with potential clients (Roy, Dewit and Aubert, 2001). Some researchers have found that much of the success of an e-service depends on website usability (Flavián, Guinalíu and Gurrea, 2006). Usability and appearance are two indicators that represent the utilitarian aspects of a website, together with its appeal. Those websites with a high level of usability in their design enable users to carry out their tasks coherently and achieve the results they expect (Palmer, 2000). In fact, this perception of control during the browsing process is positively related to the sensation of security and satisfaction (Diamantopoulos and Winklhofer, 2001; Casaló, Flavián and Guinalíu, 2008). In this international context, culture plays an increasingly relevant role in the use of information and communication technology. This is likely to affect how usability is understood, thus adding an additional factor to our understanding of culture´s effect on usability (Wallace, Reid, Clinciu and Kang, 2013). The importance of cultural factors in communications has been reinforced since the web can now link diverse regions and communities across the globe that were relatively isolated by time and space. The growth of global communications has increased and intensified the need for leaning to communicate successfully with a multitude of cultures. Regarding to these international situation, the crucial role of language in intercultural relations is widely acknowledged, with the words of a language being ‘symbols’ that acts as the vehicles for cultural transfer (Hofstede, 2001). The literature shows that the way in which a person processes information is conditioned by cultural values (Tavassoli, 2002). Furthermore, recent research has demonstrated that language is associated with cultural frameworks, such that communication in a given language can increase access to the cultural values associated with that language (Wong and Hong, 2005) and how users from the same culture, when processing information in different languages, obtain significantly different results in terms of perceived risk online (Alcántara-Pilar, Del Barrio-García and Porcu, 2013).The authors appreciate the financial help provided via a research project of group ADEMAR (University of Granada) under the auspices of the Andalusian Program for R&D, number P06-SEJ02170, and Research Program from the Faculty of Education and Humanities of Ceuta

The effect of culture and the cultural framework of language on online information - processing

    Get PDF
The present work examines the effect of the user’s language, as a vehicle for cultural values, on their processing of the information contained within a website. A sample of 491 internet users from two different cultures (British and Spanish) was created. Half the users were asked to browse the experimental website in their mother tongue, while the other half browsed in their second language (British participants browsing in Spanish and the Spanish browsing in English). The key findings of the research demonstrate that information-processing is moderated by the user’s culture and the language in which they process the information

Low-Molecular-Mass Penicillin Binding Protein 6b (DacD) Is Required for Efficient GOB-18 Metallo--Lactamase Biogenesis in Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli

    Get PDF
Metallo--lactamases (MBLs) are Zn2-containing secretory enzymes of clinical relevance, whose final folding and metal ion assembly steps in Gram-negative bacteria occur after secretion of the apo form to the periplasmic space. In the search of periplasmic factors assisting MBL biogenesis, we found that dacD null ( dacD) mutants of Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli expressing the preGOB-18 MBL gene from plasmids showed significantly reduced resistance to cefotaxime and concomitant lower accumulation of GOB-18 in the periplasm. This reduced accumulation of GOB-18 resulted from increased accessibility to proteolytic attack in the periplasm, suggesting that the lack of DacD negatively affects the stability of secreted apo MBL forms. Moreover, dacD mutants of S. enterica and E. coli showed an altered ability to develop biofilm growth. DacD is a widely distributed low-molecular-mass (LMM) penicillin binding protein (PBP6b) endowed with low DD-carboxypeptidase activity whose functions are still obscure. Our results indicate roles for DacD in assisting biogenesis of particular secretory macromolecules in Gram-negative bacteria and represent to our knowledge the first reported phenotypes for bacterial mutants lacking this LMM PBP.Fil: Brambilla, Luciano.
