Light-Element Abundance Variations at Low Metallicity: the Globular Cluster NGC 5466
We present low-resolution (R~850) spectra for 67 asymptotic giant branch
(AGB), horizontal branch and red giant branch (RGB) stars in the
low-metallicity globular cluster NGC 5466, taken with the VIRUS-P
integral-field spectrograph at the 2.7-m Harlan J. Smith telescope at McDonald
Observatory. Sixty-six stars are confirmed, and one rejected, as cluster
members based on radial velocity, which we measure to an accuracy of 16 km s-1
via template-matching techniques. CN and CH band strengths have been measured
for 29 RGB and AGB stars in NGC 5466, and the band strength indices measured
from VIRUS-P data show close agreement with those measured from Keck/LRIS
spectra previously taken of five of our target stars. We also determine carbon
abundances from comparisons with synthetic spectra. The RGB stars in our data
set cover a range in absolute V magnitude from +2 to -3, which permits us to
study the rate of carbon depletion on the giant branch as well as the point of
its onset. The data show a clear decline in carbon abundance with rising
luminosity above the luminosity function "bump" on the giant branch, and also a
subdued range in CN band strength, suggesting ongoing internal mixing in
individual stars but minor or no primordial star-to-star variation in

Mass Segregation in the Globular Cluster Palomar 5 and its Tidal Tails
We present the stellar main sequence luminosity function (LF) of the
disrupted, low-mass, low-concentration globular cluster Palomar 5 and its
well-defined tidal tails, which emanate from the cluster as a result of its
tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The results of our deep (B ~ 24.5)
wide-field photometry unequivocally indicate that preferentially fainter stars
were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body
exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other globular
clusters. There is clear evidence of mass segregation, which is reflected in a
radial variation of the LFs. The LF of the tidal tails is distinctly enhanced
with faint, low-mass stars. Pal 5 exhibits a binary main sequence, and we
estimate a photometric binary frequency of roughly 10%. Also the binaries show
evidence of mass segregation with more massive binary systems being more

HLA and cross-reactive antigen group matching for cadaver kidney allocation
Background. Allocation of cadaver kidneys by graded human leukocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility scoring arguably has had little effect on overall survival while prejudicing the transplant candidacy of African-American and other hard to match populations. Consequently, matching has been proposed of deduced amino acid residues of the individual HLA molecules shared by cross- reactive antigen groups (CREGs). We have examined the circumstances under which compatibility with either method impacted graft survival. Methods. Using Cox proportional hazards regression modeling, we studied the relationship between levels of conventional HLA mismatch and other donor and recipient factors on primary cadaver kidney survival between 1981 and 1995 at the University of Pittsburgh (n=1,780) and in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Scientific Registry during 1991-1995 (n=31,291). The results were compared with those obtained by the matching of amino acid residues that identified CREG-compatible cases with as many as four (but not five and six) HLA mismatches. Results. With more than one HLA mismatch (>85% of patients in both series), most of the survival advantage of a zero mismatch was lost. None of the HLA loci were 'weak.' In the UNOS (but not Pittsburgh) category of one-HLA mismatch (n=1334), a subgroup of CREG-matched recipients (35.3%) had better graft survival than the remaining 64.7%, who were CREG-mismatched. There was no advantage of a CREG match in the two- to four-HLA incompatibility tiers. Better graft survival with tacrolimus was observed in both the Pittsburgh and UNOS series. Conclusions. Obligatory national sharing of cadaver kidneys is justifiable only for zero-HLA-mismatched kidneys. The potential value of CREG matching observed in the one-HLA-mismatched recipients of the UNOS (but not the Pittsburgh) experience deserves further study
Sodium and Oxygen Abundances in the Open Cluster NGC 6791 from APOGEE H-Band Spectroscopy
The open cluster NGC 6791 is among the oldest, most massive and metal-rich
open clusters in the Galaxy. High-resolution -band spectra from the Apache
Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) of 11 red giants in
NGC 6791 are analyzed for their chemical abundances of iron, oxygen, and
sodium. The abundances of these three elements are found to be homogeneous
(with abundance dispersions at the level of 0.05 - 0.07 dex) in these
cluster red giants, which span much of the red-giant branch (T
3500K - 4600K), and include two red-clump giants. From the infrared
spectra, this cluster is confirmed to be among the most metal-rich clusters in
the Galaxy ( = 0.34 0.06), and is found to have a roughly
solar value of [O/Fe] and slightly enhanced [Na/Fe]. Non-LTE calculations for
the studied Na I lines in the APOGEE spectral region (16373.86\AA\ and
16388.85\AA) indicate only small departures from LTE ( 0.04 dex)
for the parameter range and metallicity of the studied stars. The previously
reported double population of cluster members with different Na abundances is
not found among the studied sample.Comment: Accepted for publication at ApJ Letter
Migration Patterns, Use of Stopover Areas, and Austral Summer Movements of Swainson\u27s Hawks
From 1995 to 1998, we tracked movements of adult Swainson’s Hawks (Buteo swainsoni), using satellite telemetry to characterize migration, important stopover areas, and movements in the austral summer. We tagged 46 hawks from July to September on their nesting grounds in seven U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. Swainson’s Hawks followed three basic routes south on a broad front, converged along the east coast of central Mexico, and followed a concentrated corridor to a communal area in central Argentina for the austral summer. North of 20°N, southward and northward tracks differed little for individuals from east of the continental divide but differed greatly (up to 1700 km) for individuals from west of the continental divide. Hawks left the breeding grounds mid-August to mid-October; departure dates did not differ by location, year, or sex. Southbound migration lasted 42 to 98 days, northbound migration 51 to 82 days. Southbound, 36% of the Swainson’s Hawks departed the nesting grounds nearly 3 weeks earlier than the other radio-marked hawks and made stopovers 9.0–26.0 days long in seven separate areas, mainly in the southern Great Plains, southern Arizona and New Mexico, and northcentral Mexico. The birds stayed in their nonbreeding range for 76 to 128 days. All used a core area in central Argentina within 23% of the 738 800-km2 austral summer range, where they frequently moved long distances (up to 1600 km). Conservation of Swainson’s Hawks must be an international effort that considers habitats used during nesting and non-nesting seasons, including migration stopovers

Surface Nano-structured Coating for Improved Performance of Axial Piston Pumps
The work starts from the consideration that most of the power losses in a hydraulic pump is due to frictional losses made by the relative motion between moving parts. This fact is particularly true at low operating velocities, when the hydraulic lift effect must be able to maintain a minimum clearance in meatus to limit the volumetric losses. The potential of structured coatings at nanoscale, with super-hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics, has never been exploited before in an industrial application. The work studies the potential application of nano-coating on piston slippers surface in a real industrial case. The aim is to develop a new industrial solution to increase the energetic efficiency of hydraulic pump used in earthmoving machines. The proposed solution is investigated using a dedicated test bench, designed to reproduce real working conditions of the pump. The results showa reduction of friction coefficient while changing working pressure and rotation velocity
The Ninth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) presents the first spectroscopic
data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This ninth data
release (DR9) of the SDSS project includes 535,995 new galaxy spectra (median
z=0.52), 102,100 new quasar spectra (median z=2.32), and 90,897 new stellar
spectra, along with the data presented in previous data releases. These spectra
were obtained with the new BOSS spectrograph and were taken between 2009
December and 2011 July. In addition, the stellar parameters pipeline, which
determines radial velocities, surface temperatures, surface gravities, and
metallicities of stars, has been updated and refined with improvements in
temperature estimates for stars with T_eff<5000 K and in metallicity estimates
for stars with [Fe/H]>-0.5. DR9 includes new stellar parameters for all stars
presented in DR8, including stars from SDSS-I and II, as well as those observed
as part of the SDSS-III Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and
Exploration-2 (SEGUE-2).
The astrometry error introduced in the DR8 imaging catalogs has been
corrected in the DR9 data products. The next data release for SDSS-III will be
in Summer 2013, which will present the first data from the Apache Point
Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) along with another year of

Catch shares, fisheries, and ecological stewardship: a comparative analysis of resource responses to a rights-based policy instrument
Rights-based approaches are potentially promising tools to meet conservation objectives in natural resource management. Here, we evaluated how population status and fishery production respond to catch shares, a rights-based policy instrument in fisheries whereby participants are granted a right to harvest a fraction of the allowable catch. By analyzing time series of landings, exploitation rate, and population biomass for >150 fisheries, we find that catch shares tended to dampen variance in fishery landings and exploitation rate, that they had no effect on population biomass, and that the responses were unrelated to population status prior to catch shares. Variance dampening was strongest when harvesting rights were durable and secure but was absent otherwise. Reductions in exploitation rate were strongest in multispecies fisheries with high levels of at-sea observers.
