Strategies to improve HIV treatment adherence in developed countries: clinical management at the individual level
Remarkable advances in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease have been blunted by widespread suboptimal adherence (ie, nonadherence), which has emerged as a major barrier to achieving the primary goal of antiretroviral (ARV) therapy: suppression of HIV viral load. Nonsuppressed HIV viral load is associated with drug resistance, increased morbidity and mortality, and a higher risk of person-to-person HIV transmission. For HIV-infected individuals who are failing HIV treatment due to nonadherence, becoming adherent is a life-saving behavior change. However, overcoming nonadherence is one of the most daunting challenges in the successful management of HIV disease. The purpose of this paper is to provide clinicians with a better understanding of nonadherence to ARV treatment and to review the various factors that have been associated with either adherence or nonadherence. Strategies are presented that may help the nonadherent individual become ready to take HIV medications as prescribed
Fast positronium formation and dissociation at surfaces
The origin of short‐lived components in the annihilation lifetime spectrum of positronium (Ps) is shown to be due to fast Ps that is collisionally dissociating at the surfaces of the surrounding confinement cavity. The results are consistent with a model of fast (10–100 eV) Ps production by backscattered positrons from the incident beam. It is found that the typical lifetime of dissociating Ps scales with the mean free path of the cavity, and the relative formation intensity depends inversely on the incident positron beam energy. This ubiquitous effect will be present in any Ps formation experiment involving a free surface and can only be eliminated at beam energies less than 10 eV. More practical methods of minimizing the undesirable systematic effects of fast Ps quenching in depth‐profiled positron lifetime spectroscopy and in precision Ps decay rate measurements will be discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70565/2/JAPIAU-78-3-1406-1.pd

Joining the CCS club! the economics of CO2 pipeline projects
This paper examines the conditions for a widespread adoption of Carbon Capture transport and Storage (CCS) by a group of emitters that can be connected to a common CO2 pipeline. It details a modeling framework aimed at assessing the critical value in the charge for the CO2 emissions required for each of the emitters to decide to implement capture capabilities. This model can be used to analyze how the tariff structure imposed on the CO2 pipeline operator modifies the overall cost of CO2 abatement via CCS. This framework is applied to the case of a real European CO2 pipeline project. We find that the obligation to use cross-subsidy-free pipeline tariffs has a minor impact on the minimum CO2 price required to adopt the CCS. In contrast, the obligation to charge non-discriminatory prices can either impede the adoption of CCS or significantly raise that price. Besides which, we compared two alternative regulatory frameworks for CO2 pipelines: a common European organization as opposed to a collection of national regulations. The results indicate that the institutional scope of that regulation has a limited impact on the adoption of CCS compared to the detailed design of the tariff structure imposed on pipeline operators
