Coulomb blockade at almost perfect transmission

We study the equilibrium properties of a quantum dot connected to a bulk lead by a single-mode quantum point contact. The ground state energy and other thermodynamic characteristics of the grain show periodic dependence on the gate voltage (Coulomb blockade). We consider the case of almost perfect transmission, and show that the oscillations exist as long as the transmission coefficient of the contact is less than unity. Near the points where the dot charge is half-integer the thermodynamic characteristics show a non-analytic behavior identical to that of the two-channel spin-1/2 Kondo model. In particular, at any transmission coefficient the capacitance measured between the gate and the lead shows periodic logarithmic singularities as a function of the gate voltage.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex 3.

    Theory of strong inelastic co-tunneling

We develop a theory of the conductance of a quantum dot connected to two leads by single-mode quantum point contacts. If the contacts are in the regime of perfect transmission, the conductance shows no Coulomb blockade oscillations as a function of the gate voltage. In the presence of small reflection in both contacts, the conductance develops small Coulomb blockade oscillations. As the temperature of the system is lowered, the amplitude of the oscillations grows, and eventually sharp periodic peaks in conductance are formed. Away from the centers of the peaks the conductance vanishes at low temperatures as T2T^2, in agreement with the theory of inelastic co-tunneling developed for the weak-tunneling case. Conductance near the center of a peak can be studied using an analogy with the multichannel Kondo problem. In the case of symmetric barriers, the peak conductance at T0T\to 0 is of the order of e2/e^2/\hbar. In the asymmetric case, the peak conductance vanishes linearly in temperature.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, uses REVTEX 3.0, epsf.sty and multicol.st

Scaling and Duality in Semi-exclusive Processes

We discuss extending scaling and duality studies to semi-exclusive processes. We show that semi-exclusive hard pion photoproduction should exhibit scaling behavior in kinematic regions where the photon and pion both interact directly with the same quark. We show that such kinematic regions exist. We also show that the constancy with changing momentum transfer of the resonance peak/scaling curve ratio, familiar for many resonances in deep inelastic scattering, is also expected in the semi-exclusive case.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

Kondo effect induced by a magnetic field

We study peculiarities of transport through a Coulomb blockade system tuned to the vicinity of the spin transition in its ground state. Such transitions can be induced in practice by application of a magnetic field. Tunneling of electrons between the dot and leads mixes the states belonging to the ground state manifold of the dot. Remarkably, both the orbital and spin degrees of freedom of the electrons are engaged in the mixing at the singlet-triplet transition point. We present a model which provides an adequate theoretical description of recent experiments with semiconductor quantum dots and carbon nanotubes

Exact Fermi-edge singularity exponent in a Luttinger liquid

We report the exact calculation of the Fermi-edge singularity exponent for correlated electrons in one dimension (Luttinger liquid). Focusing on the special interaction parameter g=1/2, the asymptotic long-time behavior can be obtained using the Wiener-Hopf method. The result confirms the previous assumption of an open boundary fixed point. In addition, a dynamic k-channel Kondo impurity is studied via Abelian bosonization for k=2 and k=4. It is shown that the corresponding orthogonality exponents are related to the orthogonality exponent in a Luttinger liquid.Comment: 8 Pages RevTeX, no figure

Scaling and criticality of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid

A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong electron-electron interactions, g_c < 1/2, and anomalous power laws for 1/2<g_c < 1, where g_c is the correlation parameter of the Luttinger liquid. These findings resolve a recent controversy. If elastic potential scattering is present, we find a logarithmically divergent impurity susceptibility at g_c<1/2 which can be rationalized in terms of the two-channel Kondo model.Comment: 11 pages REVTeX, incl. 9 PS figures, subm. to PR

Re-examination of electronic transports through a quantum wire coupled to a quantum dot

In this paper we re-examine the problem of electronic transports through a system consisting of a quantum dot which has well-defined discrete energy levels connected to an infinite quantum wire, using the bosonization method and phase shift representation, we show that all previously known results can be obtained through our method in a very simple way. Furthermore, the evolution of the system from ultraviolet to infrared critical fixed points appears naturally our method.Comment: latex, 26 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. B61, January 15/200

    Kondo effect in quantum dots

We review mechanisms of low-temperature electronic transport through a quantum dot weakly coupled to two conducting leads. Transport in this case is dominated by electron-electron interaction. At temperatures moderately lower than the charging energy of the dot, the linear conductance is suppressed by the Coulomb blockade. Upon further lowering of the temperature, however, the conductance may start to increase again due to the Kondo effect. We concentrate on lateral quantum dot systems and discuss the conductance in a broad temperature range, which includes the Kondo regime

The precise alignment of this complex device is a formidable challenge, and only achievable with a significant extension of the technologies routinely used for tracking detectors in the past. This article describes the full-scale alignment procedure as it is used during LHC operations. Among the specific features of the method are the simultaneous determination of up to 200 000 alignment parameters with tracks, the measurement of individual sensor curvature parameters, the control of systematic misalignment effects, and the implementation of the whole procedure in a multi-processor environment for high execution speed. Overall, the achieved statistical accuracy on the module alignment is found to be significantly better than 10μm

This paper describe development and financial performance of cooperative in District Pelalawan among 2007 - 2008. Studies on primary and secondary cooperative in 12 sub-districts. Method in this stady use performance measuring of productivity, efficiency, growth, liquidity, and solvability of cooperative. Productivity of cooperative in Pelalawan was highly but efficiency still low. Profit and income were highly, even liquidity of cooperative very high, and solvability was good
