Unsupervised machine learning and geometric morphometrics as tools for the identification of inter and intraspecific variations in the Anopheles Maculipennis complex
Geometric morphometric analysis was combined with two different unsupervised machine learning algorithms,
UMAP and HDBSCAN, to visualize morphological differences in wing shape among and within four Anopheles
sibling species (An. atroparvus, An. melanoon, An. maculipennis s.s. and An. daciae sp. inq.) of the Maculipennis
complex in Northern Italy. Specifically, we evaluated: (1) wing shape variation among and within species; (2) the
consistencies between groups of An. maculipennis s.s. and An. daciae sp. inq. identified based on COI sequences
and wing shape variability; and (3) the spatial and temporal distribution of different morphotypes. UMAP
detected at least 13 main patterns of variation in wing shape among the four analyzed species and mapped
intraspecific morphological variations. The relationship between the most abundant COI haplotypes of An. daciae
sp. inq. and shape ordination/variation was not significant. However, morphological variation within haplotypes
was reported. HDBSCAN also recognized different clusters of morphotypes within An. daciae sp. inq. (12) and An.
maculipennis s.s. (4). All morphotypes shared a similar pattern of variation in the subcostal vein, in the anal vein
and in the radio-medial cross-vein of the wing. On the contrary, the marginal part of the wings remained unchanged
in all clusters of both species. Any spatial-temporal significant difference was observed in the frequency
of the identified morphotypes. Our study demonstrated that machine learning algorithms are a useful tool
combined with geometric morphometrics and suggest to deepen the analysis of inter and intra specific shape
variability to evaluate evolutionary constrains related to wing functionality
Exploring patterns of beta‐diversity to test the consistency of biogeographical boundaries: A case study across forest plant communities of Italy
Aim To date, despite their great potential biogeographical regionalization models have been mostly developed on descriptive and empirical bases. This paper aims at applying the beta-diversity framework on a statistically representative data set to analytically test the consistency of the biogeographical regionalization of Italian forests. Location Italy. Taxon Vascular plants. Methods Forest plant communities were surveyed in 804 plots made in a statistically representative sample of forest communities made by 201 sites of Italian forests across the three biogeographical regions of the country: Alpine, Continental, and Mediterranean. We conducted an ordination analysis and an analysis of beta-diversity, decomposing it into its turnover and nestedness components. Results Our results provide only partial support to the consistency of the biogeographical regionalization of Italy. While the differences in forest plant communities support the distinction between the Alpine and the other two regions, differences between Continental and Mediterranean regions had lower statistical support. Pairwise beta-diversity and its turnover component are higher between- than within-biogeographical regions. This suggests that different regional species pools contribute to assembly of local communities and that spatial distance between-regions has a stronger effect than that within-regions. Main conclusions Our findings confirm a biogeographical structure of the species pools that is captured by the biogeographical regionalization. However, nonsignificant differences between the Mediterranean and Continental biogeographical regions suggest that this biogeographical regionalization is not consistent for forest plant communities. Our results demonstrate that an analytical evaluation of species composition differences among regions using beta-diversity analysis is a promising approach for testing the consistency of biogeographical regionalization models. This approach is recommended to provide support to the biogeographical regionalization used in some environmental conservation polices adopted by EU
The spatially resolved stellar population and ionized gas properties in the merger LIRG NGC 2623
We report on a detailed study of the stellar populations and ionized gas properties in the merger LIRG NGC 2623, analyzing optical integral field spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey and PMAS LArr, multiwavelength HST imaging, and OSIRIS narrow band Hα and [NII]λ6584 imaging. The spectra were processed with the starlight full spectral fitting code, and the results are compared with those for two early-stage merger LIRGs (IC 1623 W and NGC 6090), together with CALIFA Sbc/Sc galaxies. We find that NGC 2623 went through two periods of increased star formation (SF), a first and widespread episode, traced by intermediate-age stellar populations ISP (140 Myr–1.4 Gyr), and a second one, traced by young stellar populations YSP (<140 Myr), which is concentrated in the central regions (<1.4 kpc). Our results are in agreement with the epochs of the first peri-center passage (~200 Myr ago) and coalescence (<100 Myr ago) predicted by dynamical models, and with high-resolution merger simulations in the literature, consistent with NGC 2623 representing an evolved version of the early-stage mergers. Most ionized gas is concentrated within <2.8 kpc, where LINER-like ionization and high-velocity dispersion (~220 km s-1) are found, consistent with the previously reported outflow. As revealed by the highest-resolution OSIRIS and HST data, a collection of HII regions is also present in the plane of the galaxy, which explains the mixture of ionization mechanisms in this system. It is unlikely that the outflow in NGC 2623 will escape from the galaxy, given the low SFR intensity (~0.5 M⊙ yr-1 kpc-2), the fact that the outflow rate is three times lower than the current SFR, and the escape velocity in the central areas is higher than the outflow velocity
Class III myosins shape the auditory hair bundles by limiting microvilli and stereocilia growth.
International audienceThe precise architecture of hair bundles, the arrays of mechanosensitive microvilli-like stereocilia crowning the auditory hair cells, is essential to hearing. Myosin IIIa, defective in the late-onset deafness form DFNB30, has been proposed to transport espin-1 to the tips of stereocilia, thereby promoting their elongation. We show that Myo3a(-/-)Myo3b(-/-) mice lacking myosin IIIa and myosin IIIb are profoundly deaf, whereas Myo3a-cKO Myo3b(-/-) mice lacking myosin IIIb and losing myosin IIIa postnatally have normal hearing. Myo3a(-/-)Myo3b(-/-) cochlear hair bundles display robust mechanoelectrical transduction currents with normal kinetics but show severe embryonic abnormalities whose features rapidly change. These include abnormally tall and numerous microvilli or stereocilia, ungraded stereocilia bundles, and bundle rounding and closure. Surprisingly, espin-1 is properly targeted to Myo3a(-/-)Myo3b(-/-) stereocilia tips. Our results uncover the critical role that class III myosins play redundantly in hair-bundle morphogenesis; they unexpectedly limit the elongation of stereocilia and of subsequently regressing microvilli, thus contributing to the early hair bundle shaping
Design and Implementation of a Cloud-based Middleware for Persuasive Android Applications
Socompa Geothermal Prospect. Report on Water Geochemistry
Fil: Lelli, Matteo. Consiglio Nazionale delle Riserche. Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse; Italia. This report regard the elaboration and interpretation of the results of chemical and isotopic
analyses carried out on water samples collected from cold and thermal springs in the Socompa
Geothermal Prospect (SGP), Salta Province (Argentina). Sample collection was carried out in a
field campaign that took place between April 20th-25th , 2018.
In the SGP just a single geochemical exploration study was performed (Galliski et al.,
1987), but geochemical data for thermal waters collected seems to be disappeared or unavailable.
Therefore, in order to get more information regarding the origin and evolution of thermal waters
circulating in this area:
- particular attention was addressed to the identification and sampling of cold and fresh
waters from springs considered suitable to study the probable source areas (also sampled
very far from the SGP, as for samples SO14, SO15 and SO16). These samples were
included only in the elaboration of stable isotopic data, since their chemistry is governed
by physico-chemical processes active in different geological context (far from SGP) and
it is not representative of the local conditions present in the SGP. Conversely, the isotope
composition of these waters could be useful for better understanding of the evolution of
waters that feed the local thermal circuits;
- the geochemical investigation was enlarged in the Salar of Llullaillaco (located ≈35Km
S-SW to the Socompa Volcano), in which some thermal/warm springs were previously
identified;
- some previous data regarding samples from rain and surface water collected in the closed
basins of the Atacama Desert (Northern Chile – Alpers and Whittemore, 1990) were
included in the elaboration (even if just isotopic composition was analyzed)
