Body Talk: Fat is out, Fit is in

Many scholars have addressed the irreconcilable relationship between women and their bodies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways women come to understand their bodies, and to account for one’s social location in this construction of the body. Many studies that have focused on social class and women’s bodies, lack a dimension on race. Those that have focused on race and women’s bodies, lack any attention to social class. In many cases, the study of women’s bodies in terms of race compares Black women to White women. This perpetuates the view that White women are the standard to which all other women are judged. Allen (1998) explained the importance of hearing the voices of women of color without being in reference to White women’s voices, “When we privilege the knowledge of the oppressed or outsiders, we reveal aspects of the social order that previously have not been exposed” (Allen, 1998, p. 577). Without analysis of class, we can assume then that this also reflects a White middle-class standard. In order to address the role of race and class in shaping the social construction of women’s bodies and to explain variation in body satisfaction among women from various backgrounds, this study implemented both quantitative and qualitative research methods. A survey was used to collect information about social class, race, and overall body satisfaction. The quantitative analysis is supplemented in-depth semi-structured interviews to thresh out the experiences and interactions, the words and the symbols that have accompanied the process of constructing the body. The results of the survey demonstrate the importance of feedback from family in shaping women’s body satisfaction, and the overwhelming importance of mothers or mother-figures in women’s development. Yet, women who felt that their father or father-figure was important in their development also showed a significant relationship between feedback and body satisfaction, as well as the way they were able to recall that their father or father-figure spoke of other women’s bodies and their body satisfaction. Survey respondents indicated that the ideal body was “Athletic” or “Curvy.” Interview participants demonstrated a desire to “be fit.” Overall, the data suggest that the thin-ideal has become a thing of the past, but questions remain about the emergence of the new fit ideal. Is the goal to “be fit” different from the goal to be thin? Is the new fit ideal just an approved discourse for the same social practices? How does the new language for body disciplinary practices change the interpretation and impact body satisfaction? The emergence of an apparent fit ideal among women is an important transition in body discourse that should continue to be explored

Development and validation of an assay for measurement of leptin in pig saliva

Leptin has been measured in human in saliva samples. However, the low leptin concentration found in this biological fluid makes necessary the use of high sensitive methods. To the authors' knowledge, leptin has not been measured in porcine saliva. This study aimed to develop and validate a time-resolved immunofluorometric assay (TR-IFMA) for salivary leptin measurements in pigs, using a species-specific antibody, and to evaluate how salivary leptin changes with body weight, food ingestion, and in experimental models of stress and inflammation. Polyclonal antibodies were produced in rabbits immunized with recombinant porcine leptin and used to develop a sandwich TR-IFMA. The method had intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation lower than 10 and 16 %, respectively. The assay was accurate and the low limit of detection allowed detection of leptin in all analyzed samples. Salivary leptin concentration was positively correlated to body weight (r = 0.58, P = 0.01) and increased after food ingestion (P < 0.001) and after 24 h of applying a model of experimental inflammation by turpentine injection (P < 0.05). However, it did not significantly change after a model of acute stress consisting of a nose snare restraining. These results indicate that the developed assay can measure leptin in porcine saliva in a reliable way and that leptin in saliva is influenced by body weight, food ingestion and inflammation

Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Underrepresented Collegiate Students at Psychology Training Clinics

    Get PDF
Mental health treatment utilization on college campuses remains disproportionately low among underrepresented (UR) students (i.e., racial/ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, and students from low-income families). Additionally, UR students report that factors including stigma, long wait times, and costs are barriers to accessing treatment. Given these trends, new methods to bolster the utilization of counseling services among UR college students are needed. Concurrently, there is a call for psychology training programs to increase their efforts in preparing health service psychologists to work with culturally diverse populations including UR students. Psychology training clinics may be an additional resource on campuses that can be useful in meeting both of these needs. We present a program evaluation of 4-year partnership between a counseling psychology department training clinic and an academic division serving UR students at a large Midwestern university. Two quantitative metrics, including service utilization hours by UR students (2,020) and direct service hours accrued by clinical trainees (1,266), highlight the benefits of the partnership. A social justice framework and implications for training programs interested in developing similar partnerships are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved

    Recurrent Primary Intrasellar Paraganglioma

We describe a case of an 81-year-old male presenting with bitemporal visual field defects and blurry vision in the right eye. The patient was found to have a recurrent primary paraganglioma in the sellar and suprasellar region requiring a repeat transsphenoidal endoscopic resection. Immunohistochemical examination confirmed paraganglioma with the classic zellballen appearance which stained positive for chromogranin, synaptophysin, and S-100 in the periphery. Paragangliomas (PGLs) in the sella turcica are a rare entity; only 19 cases have ever been reported in the literature. PGLs in the sellar region are often misdiagnosed or diagnosed in a delayed fashion. Earlier diagnosis of this locally aggressive tumor and meticulous debulking can prevent morbidity secondary to the tumor's compressive effects. This report highlights the effectiveness of surgical interventions in treatment of paragangliomas. More research is still needed to determine the need for adjuvant therapies such as radiation

Telomere Length Shows No Association with BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutation Status

    Get PDF
This study aimed to determine whether telomere length (TL) is a marker of cancer risk or genetic status amongst two cohorts of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers and controls. The first group was a prospective set of 665 male BRCA1/2 mutation carriers and controls (mean age 53 years), all healthy at time of enrolment and blood donation, 21 of whom have developed prostate cancer whilst on study. The second group consisted of 283 female BRCA1/2 mutation carriers and controls (mean age 48 years), half of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer prior to enrolment. TL was quantified by qPCR from DNA extracted from peripheral blood lymphocytes. Weighted and unweighted Cox regressions and linear regression analyses were used to assess whether TL was associated with BRCA1/2 mutation status or cancer risk. We found no evidence for association between developing cancer or being a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carrier and telomere length. It is the first study investigating TL in a cohort of genetically predisposed males and although TL and BRCA status was previously studied in females our results don't support the previous finding of association between hereditary breast cancer and shorter TL

In vitro anti-canine distemper virus activity of fucoidan extracted from the brown alga Cladosiphon okamuranus

    Get PDF
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a morbillivirus related to measles virus that infects dogs and other carnivores. CDV has a significant global impact on animal health; however, there is no current antiviral treatment for CDV infection. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that sulfated polysaccharides exhibit antiviral properties both in vivo and in vitro, despite their low cytotoxicity to host cells. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide found in the cell wall matrix of brown algae. In this study, we evaluated in vitro anti-CDV activity of fucoidan, which was derived from Cladosiphon okamuranus. Fucoidan actively inhibited CDV replication in Vero cells at a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.1 lg/ml. The derived selectivity index (SI50) was[20,000. This polysaccharide likely inhibits viral infection by interference in the early steps and by inhibiting CDV-mediated cell fusion. Fucoidan may be useful in development of pharmacological strategies to treat and control CDV infection
