Dry Rotary Swaging with Structured Tools
AbstractRotary swaging is a cold bulk forming process. The diameter of the workpiece is reduced incrementally by oscillating movement of the tools. The established processes use lubricants which fulfill necessary functions such as lubricating, cooling and cleaning of the tools. Disadvantages caused by the use of lubricant are costs of recycling, replacement of lost coolant and for the cleaning of the workpiece. To eliminate the lubricant it is necessary to substitute the functions of the lubricant in other ways. For example by means of coating and structuring of the tools. In this study infeed rotary swaging with structured tools is investigated using finite element simulations. Different structures are implemented in the reduction zone of the tools. The influence is investigated by the radial and axial process forces. Additionally first structured tools are manufactured and experimentally tested. The results of modeling and testing are discussed
Relation between homocysteine and biochemical bone turnover markers and bone mineral density in peri- and post-menopausal women
Background: Recently, increased plasma homocysteine (Hcy) has been suggested as an independent risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, it is tempting to speculate that Hcy adversely affects bone metabolism. This study aimed to analyze the relation between Hcy and biochemical markers of bone metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD). Materials and methods: We investigated 143 peri- and post-menopausal women [median age (25th-75th percentile), 67 (57-75) years]. All subjects underwent a detailed medical examination, measurement of bone mineral density at lumbar spine (BMD-LS) and total hip (BMD-HIP), and fasting venous blood and urine sampling. Osteocalcin (OC), serum calcium (Ca), urinary desoxypyridinoline cross-links (DPD), osteoprotegerin (OPG) and soluble receptor activator of NF-ÎșB ligand (sRANKL) were studied. Results: According to BMD subjects were classified as normal (n=24), osteopenic (n=51) or osteoporotic (n=68). Median Hcy did not differ between normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic subjects (p=0.647). Partial correlation analysis, controlling for the major confounders, age, creatinine, menopause and previous fractures, revealed significant correlations between Hcy and DPD (r=0.193, p=0.022), as well as between Hcy and Ca (r=0.170, p=0.045). After adjustment for the same confounders, subsequent regression analysis confirmed significant associations of Hcy with DPD and Ca. No significant relations could be observed between Hcy and BMD-LS, BMD-HIP, OC, OPG or sRANKL. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate weak, but significant, relations between Hcy and markers of organic and inorganic bone resorption, suggesting a mechanistic role of Hcy in bone metabolism. The relation between Hcy and bone resorption was not dependent on OPG or sRANK
Schmierstofffreies Rundkneten / Trockenrundkneten
In this dissertation, the free-form forging process rotary swaging is investigated. Usually the established process is carried out under the use of a large amount of lubricants based on mineral oil. The lubricant fulfills important tasks for the process. The aim is the development of rotary swaging towards a dry process layout. To enable a dry process, it is necessary to substitute the functions of the lubricant; cooling of work piece and die, washing out of wear particles from the forming zone and process lubrication in general. The hypothesis of dry rotary swaging is to enable a dry process by means of coating and structuring of the dies. The structuring includes several size scales and the coating is constructed as a multi-layer system. This creates an optimized tribological condition in the different zones of the forging die. Finally, it is shown that such a tribologically adapted functionalized die enables dry rotary swaging of steel and aluminum workpieces
Smooth bootstrapping of copula functionals
The smooth bootstrap for estimating copula functionals in small samples is investigated. It can be used both to gauge the distribution of the estimator in question and to augment the data. Issues arising from kernel density and distribution estimation in the copula domain are addressed, such as how to avoid the bounded domain, which bandwidth matrix to choose, and how the smoothing can be carried out. Furthermore, we investigate how the smooth bootstrap impacts the underlying dependence structure or the functionals in question and under which conditions it does not. We provide specific examples and simulations that highlight advantages and caveats of the approach

A checklist for assessing the methodological quality of concurrent tES-fMRI studies (ContES checklist): a consensus study and statement
Background: Low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), including alternating or direct current stimulation (tACS or tDCS), applies weak electrical stimulation to modulate the activity of brain circuits. Integration of tES with concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for the mapping of neural activity during neuromodulation, supporting causal studies of both brain function and tES effects. Methodological aspects of tES-fMRI studies underpin the results, and reporting them in appropriate detail is required for reproducibility and interpretability. Despite the growing number of published reports, there are no consensus-based checklists for disclosing methodological details of concurrent tES-fMRI studies. Objective: To develop a consensus-based checklist of reporting standards for concurrent tES-fMRI studies to support methodological rigor, transparency, and reproducibility (ContES Checklist). Methods: A two-phase Delphi consensus process was conducted by a steering committee (SC) of 13 members and 49 expert panelists (EP) through the International Network of the tES-fMRI (INTF) Consortium. The process began with a circulation of a preliminary checklist of essential items and additional recommendations, developed by the SC based on a systematic review of 57 concurrent tES-fMRI studies. Contributors were then invited to suggest revisions or additions to the initial checklist. After the revision phase, contributors rated the importance of the 17 essential items and 42 additional recommendations in the final checklist. The state of methodological transparency within the 57 reviewed concurrent tES-fMRI studies was then assessed using the checklist. Results: Experts refined the checklist through the revision and rating phases, leading to a checklist with three categories of essential items and additional recommendations: (1) technological factors, (2) safety and noise tests, and (3) methodological factors. The level of reporting of checklist items varied among the 57 concurrent tES-fMRI papers, ranging from 24% to 76%. On average, 53% of checklist items were reported in a given article. Conclusions: Use of the ContES checklist is expected to enhance the methodological reporting quality of future concurrent tES-fMRI studies, and increase methodological transparency and reproducibility
