The Teaching Innovation Project was applied to 450 students of the Subject of Economic History of the first year of the Finance and Accounting Degree. This topic had used to be a traditional method based on master classes with the support of complementary readings and dossiers. Teaching project introduced a blended learning using the University of Seville web site. Through this platform and attending classes were also e-learning. The main topic of these activities are focused on the economic crisis with cases studies: the crisis of 1873, the Great Depression of 1929, the crisis of 1973 oil crisis, financial crisis 90’s years and the current economic crisis. Through the network materials, and exercises in class (press, reading of economic history and documentaries are established the causes, effects and common and differents aspects of these crisis

Smoking among pregnant women in Cantabria (Spain): trend and determinants of smoking cessation

Abstract

Background

Cantabria (Spain) has one of the highest prevalence of smoking among women of the European Union. The objectives are to assess the trend of smoking during pregnancy in a five-year period and the determinants of smoking cessation during pregnancy in Cantabria.

Methods

A 1/6 random sample of all women delivering at the reference hospital of the region for the period 1998–2002 was drawn, 1559 women. Information was obtained from personal interview, clinical chart, and prenatal care records. In the analysis relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Multivariable analysis was carried out using stepwise logistic regression.

Results

Smoking prior to pregnancy decreased from 53.6% in 1998 to 39.4% in 2002. A decrease in smoking cessation among women smoking at the beginning of pregnancy was observed, from 37.3% in 1998 to 20.6% in 2002. The mean number of cigarettes/day (cig/d) before pregnancy remained constant, around 16 cig/d, whereas a slight trend to increase over time was seen, from 7.7 to 8.9 cig/d. In univariate analysis two variables favoured significantly smoking cessation, although they were not included in the stepwise logistic regression analysis, a higher education level and to be married. The logistic regression model included five significant predictors (also significant in univariate analysis): intensity of smoking, number of previous pregnancies, partner's smoking status, calendar year of study period (these four variables favoured smoking continuation), and adequate prenatal care (which increased smoking cessation).

Conclusion

The frequency of smoking among pregnant women is very high in Cantabria. As smoking cessation rate has decreased over time, a change in prenatal care programme on smoking counseling is needed. Several determinants of smoking cessation, such as smoking before pregnancy and partner's smoking, should be also addressed by community programmes.</p

Soft or Hard? Investigating the Deformation Mechanisms of Au-Pd and Pd Nanocubes under Compression: An Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

In the search for new mechanisms to improve and control the mechanical properties of nanostructures, the idea of tuning the strength through composition is appealing because of the extensive experimental availability of nanoparticles with segregated configurations, such as core-shell nanoparticles. However, not much is known about the deformation mechanism of these types of systems because of the lack of correlation between theoretical predictions and experimental observations. In this work, we investigate the atomistic mechanical response of Au-Pd core-shell and Pd nanocubes under indentation, using molecular dynamics simulations. These results are compared to experimental observations of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) nanoindentation on similar nanoparticles. Our study resolves the nucleation of Shockley partial dislocations and their propagation in Au-Pd core-shell and single-crystalline Pd nanocubes. In the latter, Shockley partial dislocations originate at the cube corners and create stacking faults that propagate across the nanoparticle, creating the so-called V-shaped defects. In contrast, in Au-Pd core-shell nanocubes, nucleation starts at the semicoherent Au-Pd interface, where a network of misfits acts as dislocation storage, reducing the nanocube's strength. We explore the effect of the core size and its function as a dislocation barrier for nanocubes of smaller sizes. Additionally, strain hardening was observed as the core size increased and, for the case of the largest core (Au30Pd70) at strain values above 20%, where a complex network of different types of dislocations, including sessile dislocations, is observed. Our results suggest a clear agreement between simulation and experiments, which points to a promising field in which combining two or more metals in a core-shell configuration can be used to tune and control the mechanical properties at the nanoscale.
