Magnetic field topology of the RS CVn star II Pegasi
The dynamo processes in cool active stars generate complex magnetic fields
responsible for prominent surface stellar activity and variability at different
time scales. For a small number of cool stars magnetic field topologies were
reconstructed from the time series of spectropolarimetric observations using
the Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) method. In this study we follow a long-term
evolution of the magnetic field topology of the RS CVn binary star II Peg. We
collected high-resolution circular polarisation observations of II Peg using
the SOFIN spectropolarimeter at the Nordic Optical Telescope. These data cover
12 epochs spread over 7 years. A multi-line diagnostic technique in combination
with a new ZDI code is applied to interpret these observations. Magnetic
inversions using these data reveals evolving magnetic fields with typical local
strengths of 0.5-1.0 kG and complex topologies. Despite using a self-consistent
magnetic and temperature mapping technique, we do not find a clear correlation
between magnetic and temperature features in the ZDI maps. Neither do we
confirm the presence of persistent azimuthal field rings found in other RS CVn
stars. Reconstruction of the magnetic field topology of II Peg reveals
significant evolution of both the surface magnetic field structure and the
extended magnetospheric field geometry. From 2004 to 2010 the total field
energy drastically declined and the field became less axisymmetric. This also
coincided with the transition from predominantly poloidal to mainly toroidal
field topology. A qualitative comparison of the ZDI maps of II Peg with the
prediction of dynamo theory suggests that the magnetic field in this star is
produced mainly by the turbulent alpha^2 dynamo rather than the solar
alphaOmega dynamo. Our results do not show a clear active longitude system, nor

New scaling for the alpha effect in slowly rotating turbulence
Using simulations of slowly rotating stratified turbulence, we show that the
alpha effect responsible for the generation of astrophysical magnetic fields is
proportional to the logarithmic gradient of kinetic energy density rather than
that of momentum, as was previously thought. This result is in agreement with a
new analytic theory developed in this paper for large Reynolds numbers. Thus,
the contribution of density stratification is less important than that of
turbulent velocity. The alpha effect and other turbulent transport coefficients
are determined by means of the test-field method. In addition to forced
turbulence, we also investigate supernova-driven turbulence and stellar
convection. In some cases (intermediate rotation rate for forced turbulence,
convection with intermediate temperature stratification, and supernova-driven
turbulence) we find that the contribution of density stratification might be

Anti-neuronal anti-bodies in patients with early psychosis
It may be challenging to distinguish autoimmune encephalitis associated with anti-neuronal autoantibodies from primary psychiatric disorders. Here, serum was drawn from patients with a first-episode psychosis (n = 70) or a clinical high-risk for psychosis (n = 6) and controls (n = 34). We investigated the serum prevalence of 24 antineuronal autoantibodies: IgG antibodies for anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate-type glutamate receptor (anti-NMDAR), glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid alpha and beta receptors (GABA-a, GABA-b), alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPA), glycine receptor (GlyR), metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 and 5 (mGluR1, mGluR5), anti-Tr/Delta/notch-like epidermal growth factor-related receptor (DNER), contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), glutamic acid decarboxylase-65 (GAD65), collapsin response mediator protein 5/crossveinless-2 (CV2), aquaporin-4 (AQP4), anti-dipeptidyl-peptidase-like protein-6 (DPPX), type 1 anti-neuronal nuclear antibody (ANNA-1, Hu), Ri, Yo, IgLON5, Ma2, zinc finger protein 4 (ZIC4), Rho GTPase-activating protein 26, amphiphysin, and recoverin, as well as IgA and IgM for dopamine-2-receptor (DRD2). Anti-NMDA IgG antibodies were positive with serum titer 1:320 in one patient with a clinical high risk for psychosis. He did not receive a diagnosis of encephalitis after comprehensive neurological evaluation. Doppler images of II Pegasi for 2004-2010
Aims. We study the spot activity of II Peg during the years 2004-2010 to
determine long- and short-term changes in the magnetic activity. In a previous
study, we detected a persistent active longitude, as well as major changes in
the spot configuration occurring on a timescale of shorter than a year. The
main objective of this study is to determine whether the same phenomena persist
in the star during these six years of spectroscopic monitoring.
Methods. The observations were collected with the high-resolution SOFIN
spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope. The temperature maps were
calculated using a Doppler imaging code based on Tikhonov regularization.
Results. We present 12 new temperature maps that show spots distributed
mainly over high and intermediate latitudes. In each image, 1-3 main active
regions can be identified. The activity level of the star is clearly lower than
during our previous study for the years 1994-2002. In contrast to the previous
observations, we detect no clear drift of the active regions with respect to
the rotation of the star.
Conclusions. Having shown a systematic longitudinal drift of the
spot-generating mechanism during 1994-2002, the star has clearly switched to a
low-activity state for 2004-2010, during which the spot locations appear more
random over phase space. It could be that the star is near to a minimum of its

Altered Activation of Innate Immunity Associates with White Matter Volume and Diffusion in First-Episode Psychosis
First-episode psychosis (FEP) is associated with inflammatory and brain structural changes, but few studies have investigated whether systemic inflammation associates with brain structural changes in FEP. Thirty-seven FEP patients (median 27 days on antipsychotic medication), and 19 matched controls were recruited. Serum levels of 38 chemokines and cytokines, and cardiovascular risk markers were measured at baseline and 2 months later. We collected T1-and diffusion-weighted MRIs with a 3 T scanner from the patients at baseline. We analyzed the association of psychosis-related inflammatory markers with gray and white matter (WM) volume using voxel-based morphometry and WM diffusion using tract-based spatial statistics with whole-brain and region-of-interest (ROI) analyses. FEP patients had higher CCL22 and lower TGFa, CXCL1, CCL7, IFN-alpha 2 and ApoA-I than controls. CCL22 decreased significantly between baseline and 2 months in patients but was still higher than in controls. The association between inflammatory markers and FEP remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, smoking and BMI. We did not observe a correlation of inflammatory markers with any symptoms or duration of antipsychotic treatment. Baseline CCL22 levels correlated negatively with WM volume and positively with mean diffusivity and radial diffusivity bilaterally in the frontal lobes in ROI analyses. Decreased serum lan association between circulating chemokine levels and WM in FEP patients. Interestingly, CCL22 has been previously implicated in autoimmune diseases associated with WM pathology. The results suggest that an altered activation of innate immunity may contribute to WM damage in psychotic disorders.evel of ApoA-I was associated with smaller volume of the medial temporal WM. Serum metabolite profile associates with the development of metabolic co-morbidities in first-episode psychosis
Psychotic patients are at high risk for developing obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. These metabolic co-morbidities are hypothesized to be related to both treatment side effects as well as to metabolic changes occurring during the psychosis. Earlier metabolomics studies have shown that blood metabolite levels are predictive of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in the general population as well as sensitive to the effects of antipsychotics. In this study, we aimed to identify the metabolite profiles predicting future weight gain and other metabolic abnormalities in psychotic patients. We applied comprehensive metabolomics to investigate serum metabolite profiles in a prospective study setting in 36 first-episode psychosis patients during the first year of the antipsychotic treatment and 19 controls. While corroborating several earlier findings when comparing cases and controls and the effects of the antipsychotic medication, we also found that prospective weight gain in psychotic patients was associated with increased levels of triacylglycerols with low carbon number and double-bond count at baseline, that is, lipids known to be associated with increased liver fat. Our study suggests that metabolite profiles may be used to identify the psychotic patients most vulnerable to develop metabolic co-morbidities, and may point to a pharmacological approach to counteract the antipsychotic-induced weight gain

On the risk of studying practices in isolation: Linking what, who and how in strategy research
This paper challenges the recent focus on practices as stand-alone phenomena, as exemplified by the so-called âPractice-Based View of Strategy (PBV)â by Bromiley and Rau (2014). While the goal of âPBVâ points to the potential of standard practices to generate performance differentials (in contrast to the Resource Based View), it marginalizes wellknown insights from practice theory more widely. In particular, by limiting its focus to practices, i.e. âwhatâ practices are used, it underplays the implications of âwhoâ is engaged in the practices and âhowâ the practices are carried out. In examining practices in isolation, the âPBVâ carries the serious risk of misattributing performance differentials. In this paper, we offer an integrative practice perspective on strategy and performance that should aid scholars in generating more precise and contextually-sensitive theories about the enactment and impact of practices as well as about critical factors shaping differences in practice outcomes
Evolutionary discriminative confidence estimation for spoken term detection

of spoken terms in audio archives. It relies on robust confidence estimation
to make a hit/false alarm (FA) decision. In order to optimize the decision
in terms of the STD evaluation metric, the confidence has to be discriminative.
Multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) and support vector machines (SVMs) exhibit
good performance in producing discriminative confidence; however they are
severely limited by the continuous objective functions, and are therefore less
capable of dealing with complex decision tasks. This leads to a substantial
performance reduction when measuring detection of out-of-vocabulary (OOV)
terms, where the high diversity in term properties usually leads to a complicated
decision boundary.
In this paper we present a new discriminative confidence estimation approach
based on evolutionary discriminant analysis (EDA). Unlike MLPs and
SVMs, EDA uses the classification error as its objective function, resulting
in a model optimized towards the evaluation metric. In addition, EDA combines
heterogeneous projection functions and classification strategies in decision
making, leading to a highly flexible classifier that is capable of dealing
with complex decision tasks. Finally, the evolutionary strategy of EDA reduces the risk of local minima. We tested the EDA-based confidence with a
state-of-the-art phoneme-based STD system on an English meeting domain
corpus, which employs a phoneme speech recognition system to produce lattices
within which the phoneme sequences corresponding to the enquiry terms
are searched. The test corpora comprise 11 hours of speech data recorded with
individual head-mounted microphones from 30 meetings carried out at several
institutes including ICSI; NIST; ISL; LDC; the Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University; and the University of Edinburgh. The experimental results
demonstrate that EDA considerably outperforms MLPs and SVMs on
both classification and confidence measurement in STD, and the advantage
is found to be more significant on OOV terms than on in-vocabulary (INV)
terms. In terms of classification performance, EDA achieved an equal error
rate (EER) of 11% on OOV terms, compared to 34% and 31% with MLPs and
SVMs respectively; for INV terms, an EER of 15% was obtained with EDA
compared to 17% obtained with MLPs and SVMs. In terms of STD performance
for OOV terms, EDA presented a significant relative improvement of
1.4% and 2.5% in terms of average term-weighted value (ATWV) over MLPs

Classification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital. a prospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study has explored the classification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital. A review of the literature reveals that there is a need for studies using stringent methodological approaches.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>480 first-time admitted patients to psychiatric hospital were found eligible and 271 of these gave written informed consent. The study sample was comprised of 250 patients (52%) with hospital diagnoses. For the study, expert diagnoses were given on the basis of a structured diagnostic interview (M.I.N.I.PLUS) and retrospective review of patient records.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Agreement between the expert's and the clinicians' diagnoses was estimated using Cohen's kappa statistics. 76% of the primary diagnoses given by the expert were in the affective spectrum. Agreement concerning these disorders was moderate (kappa ranging from 0.41 to 0.47). Of 58 patients with bipolar disorder, only 17 received this diagnosis in the clinic. Almost all patients with a current manic episode were classified as currently manic by the clinicians. Forty percent diagnosed as bipolar by the expert, received a diagnosis of unipolar depression by the clinician. Fifteen patients (26%) were not given a diagnosis of affective disorder at all.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results indicate a considerable misclassification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital, mainly in patients currently depressed. The importance of correctly diagnosing bipolar disorder should be emphasized both for clinical, administrative and research purposes. The findings questions the validity of psychiatric case registers. There are potential benefits in structuring the diagnostic process better in the clinic.</p
